Formula 1 teams will test at Sepang for three days in March ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix, the circuit has confirmed.
Teams had been keen to test at the track in the three-week gap between the season opener in Australia on March 18 and the second round at Sepang, in order to avoid flying personnel and equipment back to Europe.
And now the circuit’s press officer, Azhar Ghazali has confirmed to Malaysian newspaper The Star that the first official F1 test at the track will take place on March 27-29.
“It (the testing sessions) is further recognition of our efforts to make the circuit in Sepang as a hub of motorsports in Asia,” he said.
“Almost all the F1 teams are based in Europe and it would make sense for them to commit their personnel to test the cars in Sepang instead of flying them back to the other side of the globe."
He added that as the test has been granted official status, race drivers are set to take part across the three days.
“Most of the F1 teams also have their own test drivers,” he said.
“But the main drivers are expected to take part in the testing session in Sepang because of the official status.”
The Malaysian GP will take place on April 8
