As many of you may be aware Square is currently trying to work on several FF titles at once and it hasn't had the best results so I got to thinking which is better. The old square or the new square. There was a time when Square Soft had said they would be releasing FF IX, X, and XI and they were all in development at the same time. I would also say that those games all turned out fairly well. Now with Square Enix we've been treated to XIII which received many complaints about its linearity and other issues that many people found with it, although I really liked it, the broken FF XIV, and Versus XIII which has been trapped in development hell forever. Maybe Enix is starting to get back on track with Type-0 and XIII-2, I also realize that these new titles take longer due to newer graphics and what not but when the old square could work on and develop 3 main title games with a successful outcome and the current square seems to be having issues, which is better?

FFXII was released pretty quick as well as XIII-2. The Dissidias and Crisis Core did well and hey SE now has Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Deus Ex under their label.

I voted Square Soft because my favorite FFs were made by it as well as some of the best FFs like my favorites FFVII and FFX.

I could argue both sides. I am more on the fence. I mean Square Enix brought FFV,FFII, and FFIII to america. Yeah Squaresoft does have my favorite FFs. If we are only talking FF SE has released more than Squaresoft. FFX greatest hits is under SE. If not only talking FF then SE has all of KH except the first. Look what SE has done with FFVII. SE has actually done a lot and yeah there is Versus but does it not look good. FFXIII did get a little bad criticism but I liked it a lot. SS was during PSone and SE pretty much was during PS2 and now. One thing SE does need is a Chrono game but Squaresoft is done whereas SE is ongoing so SE has much more FFs and others coming.

That sound hostile but I want you to know it is not. I was giving more reasoning behind my choice.

Well I have a tie between FFVII and FFX for greatest fantasy games because they were amazing, but I think FFX was a great addition to Square Soft because it had the most strategy.

Squaresoft was great at releasing games but some of that probably had to do with their smaller size at the time. During PS1 they really blew-up and PS2 is where we started seeing sequals and spin-offs. There are definitely games in development hell at Square-Enix these days, but they also release a lot MORE games than Squaresoft ever did and I'm a fan of many of them. One thing that could be affecting this generation's releases is the negative feedback for FFXIII. VII, VIII and IX were pumped-out quick cuz they adapted the existing game engine. XIII got a lot of complaints though, so that may have sent Square-Enix back to the drawing board on some of their ideas for future releases like VsXIII.

I voted for Square Soft just now. I was more focused on FF specifically and the topic of releasing several FFs at the same time but I'm glad to see that you guys expanded it and voted based on your own criteria:D

Square Soft never really made any other FFs besides the ones in the main series. There were few..the most noticable one was FF tactics. Now SE has released FFXII-FFXIII..that may not seem like a lot but there is aso Crisis Core,DOC,ADvent Children...the created the Ivalice Alliance and released games under that. They came up with the compilation of FFVII. There is the remakes of FFIV and FFIII..which was the first time we had seen 3. They also acquired Eidos along with the Hitman and Tomb Raider franchises. I mean SE just seemed to accomplish more in my opinion. There is so much more coming too with FFXIV, Versus, Type-0, Type-1, Final Fantasy XIII-2. The thing is though is that Squaresoft did good and gave the company a huge start and when they turned into SE they continue to make us smile so both seem to be very good and have happened t impress me, I do not really think one is better than the other. They both were two parts of something bigger and that is Final Fantasy. That is my final verdict.

SquareSoft easily. They made Final Fantasy I-X, Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Breath of Fire I, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve,Xenogears, Legend of Mana, Star Ocean 1-3 and the 1st Kingdom Hearts. Not saying Square Enix hasn't made great games but they've made a lot of mediocre games.

Squaresoft deserves no credit for Star Ocean because for one we did not see the first one till SE released it on PSP. Second, Enix published the second one not Squaresoft then was released later by SE. The third one is SE not squaresoft.

Also guys Squaresoft did not publish FF1-FFVI...It was just Square. Same with Breath of Fire 1 and Chrono Trigger. Squaresoft just rereleased them.

Technacally Star Ocean is developed by Tri-Ace and it is just published by Enix or SE. Kind of like what Tomb Raider is now...just published by SE and developed by Crystal Dynamics. In trhe end we are actually battaling not on two seperate companys but two different time periods in the same company. Because SE is the same as Squaresoft just as Squaresoft is the same as just Square. The company has just aquired small companys and went through a transformation, mainly with name. Who is to say the same thing would not have happend if Square had not takenb in Enix.

I'm a big Tomb Raider fan so I was super stoked that Square acquired Eidos. Guardian of Light was awesome and I think the new TR is going to pwn.

I kinda agree with it being the same company and all and I also agree that the new TR looks like it will be awesome but in all regards I didn't see anything wrong with the current gen trilogy or threesome of titles so I'm not entire sure why it need such a drastic change:?

Legend and Anniversary were awesome. I really like Underworld but I did feel that the system was getting a little stale. Either way, the Trilogy collection was an awesome deal and I have high hopes for the new series.

Your right, I feel that Legend and Anniversary had to be my two favorites but Underworld it really didnt have much action to it. I couldnt even consider boss battles as boss battles.

To be honest, we're comparing apples to apples here. Squaresoft and Square Enix are the same company. I think the better question to ask is which era was better. That's how I answered the poll question. In my opinion, the Squaresoft era was much better. Not only did that era give us my most beloved games from the Final Fantasy series but it also gave us other great games like Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Super Mario RPG. :)

Squaresoft and Enix were better when they were competing against each other, now who's there to compete for JRPGs? Tales of? SE has grown weak.
