Final Fantasy XI is one of the most recognizable second generation MMORPGs amongst Asheron's Call 2, EverQuest II, World of Warcraft, and City of Heroes/Villains. Final Fantasy XI is an example of real cross-platforming done right. The game has a lot of depth and options. Really, the only problem MMORPG gamers have with Final Fantasy XI is the time you must spend to play(the grind), a nonexistent roleplaying community, and a few other problems. Most MMORPGs now use a seamless world. Basically as your character moves the game loads what needs to be infront of you seamlessly(you don't really notice it). But sometimes it is really hard for the developer to create transitions between two areas that are designed differently. Well, that's not a real problem anymore(maybe during the first generation of MMORPGs) because games like World of Warcraft and the upcoming Vanguard: Saga of Heroes do that well.
Seamless worlds create an immersion that some zone-based games don't have. Final Fantasy XI released with a zone-based world for crowd control. Also it's easy to add new locations and even update others with zone-based worlds. Yet, seamless worlds are better now a days because of new technology. And you hardly ever have to deal with load times. As with Final Fantasy XI, every area you enter the game has to load.
FFE does not discriminate in its FF coverage. If you check our archive and compare it with the rest of the FF and Square Enix unions in GS combined, FFE has been very impartial toward FFXI coverage, although I must admit that not too many of us has played the game.
But there ar esome guys like svchaos, -phaz-, antsnail and I thikn Etheralfayt (all were officers of FFE, past and/or present), and there are also som eemmbers who once in a while share their experiences and images to the FFE community.
But Final Fantasy XI, much like a lot of other MMORPGs are being overshadowed by World of Warcraft. Man, the Burning Crusade comes out next month. A lot of expansion packs for PC games aren't always highly anticipated. But the Burning Crusade surprisingly has as much hype as Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid, and Halo 3. So the media really doesn't focus it's attention on any other game of this type unless it really hasn't been release. In fact Gamespot.com always advertises the patches of World of Warcraft as a main headline on their index pages. A lot of companies like Mythic, Bioware, Funcom, and Sigil are creating some of the most anticipated MMORPGs hoping to remove WoW from it's throne. The question is have they really learned from there past mistakes? For some other companies(like Bioware and Sigil) they are creating their first MMO which can be a risk.
Square Enix is developing a another MMORPG(working title). We don't know if it involves Final Fantasy XI, or perhaps another game in the series. In fact it could be a new franchise. But I am hoping the project wasn't cancel. I am really look forward to seeing what SE does with this one especially since WoW has been a big influence on this type of market during the second generation.
