I'm not shocked, but i've been annoyed since FF11 for using the "XII" for an online game. Should just have called it "Final Fantasy Online" and the upcoming one as "Final Fantasy Online II".

Anyway, I'm looking forward to playing it.

^^I agree. Why the heck did they have to make the online games part of the numbered series? Why couldn't they be Final Fantasy Online? It's not like Final Fantasy Tactics or Crystal Chronicles are part of the numbered series. Could you imagine if they were? I guess FFT wouldn't be so bad, but CC on the other hand.... As for FFXIV, I said it once, I'll say it again, it should have been part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII series. Did anyone hear of Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII besides me? I thought that was supposed to be online.

Hope: An empty word that is frequently dashed by reality. I'm sure that FF XIV will be just as lousy as XI.

Does it really matter is the game has a "IVX" or the word "Online" at the end of the name? Really it makes no difference what so ever what the name of the game is.. I'm looking forward to this and cant wait to see how well it plays!

I got these from YOUR blog.

1. First off criticism is an opinion. That's all it is.

2. You can like a game that's received universal disdain from professional critics, it doesn't make you wrong.

3. the games you like or dislike will always come down to a matter of personal taste.

Hypocrite much?

Enjoy your "mocking".

Technically I'm not being a hypocrite. I'm offering an opinion about online final fantasy titles. I never once said that the people who actually like them are wrong, I just said that I'll mock them for being willing to pay a monthly fee.

You can mock the hell out me. I'll pay for Xbox Live, The Old Republic, and Final Fantasy XIV.  :D

Well. Actually, I'll have to try the free month of Final Fantasy XIV since I never missed a Final Fantasy game. At the same time, it'll be the quality that will determine if I continue to play it or the new Star Wars MMORPG.

ktulu(nice name, Therion influenced?), i agree, but it was bound to come, they made a hell of a lot of money out of XI, its a very easy way of making money as MMORPG's are generally highly addictive...

What does the Greek word for Wild animal or beast have to do with my screen name. And while it is an obvious move it still annoys me. I like my Final Fantasy titles with good stories and compelling characters neither of which have ever been in an MMORPG.

I'll have to disagree on this part. XI has a good story and compelling characters that aren't pc players.

I can't say I'm super excited. I would have preferred a "traditional" FF game, but I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on this.

We also forget Turbine Studios ability to tell a story. That's how Asheron's Call defined itself with EverQuest on the market. And boy did they do some crazy %^%^ in Dereth. Not to mention Lord of the Rings Online.

I will admit that with all these games the storyline isn't as accessible. With Asheron's Call Turbine used a mixture of special and scripted events, specially designed avatars(like Bael'zharon and Asheron), and major alteration of the game world to provide a story. Sometimes you'd miss the development teams staging a scene because you we're not logged on, or perhaps the final battle of a event required you to be at a much higher level.

With Final Fantasy XI and Lord of the Rings Online they use instancing and scripted events in quests. They both even had cutscenes. But with these two games you had to reach a certain level before venturing forward since these quest had level requirements. Depending how hard the grind was, people can easily loose patience. Unlike FFXI, Lord of the Rings Online was much more forgiving.

I remember I always wanted to go play Asherson's Call but I was playing EQ at the time (for a good 4 years actually lol) and never got around to it. Plus 1 MMO is more than enough

In my opinion it does matter. It sounds trivial, but I personally have a reason for that. Each numbered (in other words 'main') Final Fantasy has given a unique experience as an RPG, showing a unique world, characters, setting, and story. This continued for years, all the way through X, until FFXI came along. There was little to nothing unique about the game. It's an MMO, there are no enjoyable cast of characters, or really much for characters at all. One develops no connection with the game because its an MMO. That genre of games serves only an obsession with playing an RPG with other people.

It sounds like I have something against MMO's, I really don't. I used to play them quite a bit, but stopped because I don't have the time or patience to play them anymore. The point is that each main FF offered a geniuinely unique experience. Every fan somewhere enjoys each one of them for the characters and story. The problem is that SE uses a  numbered FF for an unoriginal MMO which offers nothing to FF fans. Having played XI myself, there was nothing Final Fantasy about it. It was missing that hard to pinpoint FF atmosphere. The only thing there to remind you that it was a FF game were the chocobo's and moogles. Besides that, it was a mostly generic MMO, doing everything WoW had done, except not quite as well.

On FFXIV, I'll try and keep an open mind, but I'm not very optimistic. I find it horribly moronic that FFXIV will be released right around the same time, possible BEFORE FFXIII. The title of FFXIV should have been reserved for an original FF game, eventually succeeding FFXIII once that franchise of games are finished. Instead, its used for a MMORPG, games which consistently have no heart. And in my opinion, heart, especially in a FF game, is half of it. So, as much as I love the franchise, I believe FFXIV is the end of Final Fantasy as we know it.

The real question is; who here has a played Final Fantasy XI longer then CamiKitten? Honestly that's the real question. At the same time, I will admit that there is only so much you can take(for some of us). As a Final Fantasy fan, I did not play Final Fantasy XI long enough to really see the story(or stories) develop into the spectacle that others have witness. I've only been able to watch video on youtube to see anything exceeding level 34(or watching my sister's boyfriend play it).

I still can't see why anyone would say Final Fantasy XI is uninspiring. Like you said; the only thing that really bothered me with the game was the time-sink. If followed some of the more traditional rule sets from prior MMORPGs such as Everquest(hours of grinding). Final Fantasy XI was literally caught between eras since City of Heroes and World of Warcraft were just around the corner. I just remember when it came out there was nothing but a positive response to it.

Therion is a band and they do a song called the Call of Ktulu, otherwise I know nothing on that subject...just a guess...

Well its not like I'm looking for a competition on who played the longest. I played pretty heavy for 6 or 8 months then a bit more sparingly for a year in a half and just quitting. But if you put a roman numeral on a FF it naturally will be compared with ones that came before it. And when you try comparing with other FF's...well you can't. It's an MMO and I don't find level grinding overly enjoyable. That's partially why I enjoy Guild Wars a lot more, apart from being, you know, free. There's a hell of a lot of things to do and see, and plenty of it I did not. But is what you do see, which most likely takes month to, worth the 100+ dollars you have payed in monthly fees by that point, to buy several of the earlier FF's? I would have to say probably not.

I'll admit it was caught between two worlds there, but I can't quite agree on you with it having nothing but positive response. Most official reviews were somewhat lackluster. All around I think it got a lukewarm reception. Probably a bit more positive amongst fans, especially to those who happen to love both FF and MMO's. Nobody was probably too sure what to expect. But having experienced what I did from XI, I don't have much to say on XIV. Then again, nobody really has much of a right to say one way or the other. What news do we have on it? A flashy FMV, that's all. FFXII had a lot of those, but I personally enjoyed X-2 more than that game. But discussing FFXII is a whole other topic.

I'm looking forward to XIV actually.

XI was ok, but it did have alot of flaws. I'm sure SE has learned from these and other MMOs and will make a great new game, but hey I could be wrong, it might suck! Only time will tell eh?
