http://kotaku.com/gaming/germany/germanys-latest-killer-game-final-fantasy-vii-229049.php Wow! I think the German government is starting to take it a little too far. Fantasy VII is now being labeled as a "Killerspiele"; a killer game. which means it's banned! All becuase of 2 kids murdered somebody calling themselves "Reno" and "Sephiroth". What if I threw a molotov coktail into a bakery and said "My name is Mario and that's my fireball attack!" I think the German's should rethink their laws and stop pointing to video games as a scapegoat.

It must suck to live in a world where you can't play great rpgs like FFVII or great shooters like Gears of War.

Ya I agree, just because they used the damn names doesn't mean anything.  I'm postive that in Final Fantasy VII you don't kill two girls parents and gag the girl to death... and im sure Reno and Septh.  aren't friends either... the Germans can be really messed sometimes.

I don't think it's been banned -- at least I didn't read that from the article. It's just been labeled a "killer game". You can still buy it, I presume. Nonetheless, it just goes to show that governments have not bothered to prove the psychological links between games and violent behavior before passing judgement. Especially a game like FFVII. WTF?

Once again games are guilty of parents being plain irresponsible in raising their children decently.... When is it they are going to learn that, if they want to criticize teenagers doing something that serious, they should criticize the parents?

gamers in germany must really hate their government with all this stuff happening..they're slowly killing off the industry in that area with no actual reasons at all, they're just blaming these things on games, even if the game in no way encourages such behaviour...hopefully the american government doesn't get worse up to the stage where they'll actually take legal action against games and ban things that there's no real reason to ban...that would certainly be a very dark day for the gaming industry...as they'd lose almost half of their customers....

the game isn't banned (it's rated for 12 years and older), "Killerspiel" is just a propaganda term, mostly used by politicians and the media.

That certainly is a shame. i think i'll write to scientific amercan ( magazine my brother reads about science) and ask them to do an article on the affects of video games.. on the mental stability of persons...

shame though that ppl had to die. FF is not to blame in my opinion though.

if killing were based on media trhen my massive playing time of GTA means that most people in the world would be dead, not counting age of empiers 3 and games like it

My dear Amnesiac, you just commited a couple of grievous logical falicies.  First of all, your premise of "Games, movies, or music are NEVER to blame." is false since it can be shown that media influences people.  So, perhaps if you were to say "Games, movies, and music are never the sole problem that politicians make them out to be." that would be better.  Or even take a different route entirely and start with "G,M, & M are just scapegoats that politicians and the media use to avoid the deeper rooted harder problems in a given society, they're hardly, if ever, to blame."  Then your conclusion is way off since not everyone watches movies, listens to music, and/or plays games, and even if they did the basic ideas of probability would suggest that an odd one would not become violent (Just in general its bad to say everyone).  A better conclusion perhaps would be, "If they were then murders and violence in general would be grossly higher than it is."

Sorry, your statement just made the little logician my English Teacher implanted in me wince.  I appreciate the passion of your statement, but passion alone rarely wins an argument.

lol, you have a point there...but i think most ppl already know that, and it does get rather annoying with politicians always blaming games when that clearly is far from being the main problem...what minimal effect they do have is overexaggerated way too much...the media that affects ppl the most is TV and movies, ppl dnt do these things just because they've played a game, apart from maybe 1 or 2 idiots, most of them would have done these things because of their upbringing and the things going on around them, especially when they were younger, not because of stuff happening on a screen, there is quite a large difference there, one that the politicians etc. trying to get games banned or blaming them for these things dnt seem to realise...
