Which one you think is better? I just noticed that for hardcore old-school FF gamers, Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI were the two contending "best FF ever" game in the series.

For those who are not aware, FFIV was also known as FFII in the US SNES, and FFVI was released in the US SNES as FFIII.

Let's discuss about gameplay, character development and story...

I would personally have to go with VI because I loved the fact that you start out as someone who has no identity no past or even no apparent future (Terra). Seeing her progress from amnesia patient to becoming more of a typical "main character" was very satsifying. All of the characters are very well played out and their personalities are very well defined (gotta love the player King Edgar and the ever badazz loyal knight Cyan). I found it fun to play and well paced for an old school Final Fantasy. The story is top notch, with almost limitless humor in the beginning (Locke and Edgars shpeel when Terra first uses magic, classic!) to reel you in only to get better as the game progressed. Even the "bad guy" Kefka has been voted the second best nemesis in the series next to Sephy. I agree because he starts out as only comic relief to then become the ultimate threat whereas Sephy is bad from the get go. There are alot more random battles in the field than I personally would have liked but it helped in the long-run by levelling me up faster. It is also the only FF I know of with a looping section (on the river) to cheat (without touching your controller) to get yourself to infinitely level to wherever you felt like stopping (exploited profusely, I might add). I also very much liked the branching story lines. It's nice to see a game every now and then where you don't have to make everyone go the same places all the time. It was a welcome distraction, at the time. I wish they could cook something up for the upcoming FFs along those lines. My absolute favorite aspect of the game has to be the fact there there is treasure lying around absolutely everywhere helping to fully explore every nook and cranny of every place to happen upon. My vote goes to VI.

I have to say 6, but this is very hard to decide for the simple fact that even though they were from the same "era" they technical spec of each game has a very large gap between them, Persnally, 6 gripped me far more as far as music and story and the cast of characters, even though alot of them werent directly involved with the main plot the wrtitters did an excelent job with giving a back story to EVERY one of them wether its when u first encounter them or somewere down the line father in the game or even if u have to do a side quest to figure it out, but in the end u know exaclty why their there and what has motivated them is some way, and to me that is the most important thing. 6 has the largest cast of characters than any other ff title, and usually with an rpg that has a large cast, they never even bother with most of the characters, 6 was a releif  after i played it. The game play was perfect to say the least, every character had a unique ability to fit whatever particular role u wanted them to while still allowing customization, and even the hidden "limit breaks" each character has, lol u can go an entire game without even seeing one occur, a lot of people dont even know they exist in that game.  The music is incredible, fitting for every event. And it was very dark for a final fantasy wich gave it a definitive vibe that i liked from the start. But hey thats just me.....

Thjat's almost like asking me which leg I want to keep. VI is better, but only slightly. IT is hte lack fo Edward that makes it better, more than anything.

Final Fantasy IV for battle system/fighting and FFVI for story. I know it's a toss-up. I loved FFIVs simple yet difficult gameplay and FFVI's deep story.

I'm going to go with VI, I enjoyed it more in the sense of the overall experience. I really enjoyed the characters that were present in VI(especially Locke, one of my fav. FF characters). IV is good..but I just enjoyed VI more.

i'm gonna go with FFVI simply because at the end of the game, i felt more attached to all of the characters than i did at the end of ffiv, plus it had some subtle parts to the plot that really had me thinking

FFVI!!

It was my first FF. And to this day my favorite. I love almost every aspect of the game. From the epic and huge story, the characters ~ I really like how every character was well developed and had something to do with the main story. Graphics ~ very good for a SNES game, music. And of course the bad guy: Kefka..I mean, who doesnt like evil hating clowns who want to destroy the world??

IV is a great game, no doubt about that. It has a great story line, gameplay and characters, plus a lot of memorable moments (like the Spoony Bard line :P ).

But when it comes to my favorite between IV and VI, VI wins hands down. VI has an unbelievably deep story that brought up a lot of emotions when I was playing it. (I should mention that VI was the first FF I played all the way through). It was the story and the characters from VI that truly hooked me on the Final Fantasy series and made me realize what an awesome series it really is. I still catch myself humming some of the music from it...(stop laughing). I could keep going, but others have already stated the rest of my reasons.

I wonder why it seems like I'm the only guy who can't see the so-called EXTRA deep storyline of VI. Sure the developers made a great output in being able to bring the characters life interconnected, but I don't see it as something deep.

Anyway, there are some aspects of IV which I think is better than VI. I love the character development, especially of Cecil... from a bad boy, close minded general to one great hero and friend.

Summons in IV are definitely better than in VI coz in IV they are, somehow, animated.

but overall, I think VI is far better.... At least with regard to the innovations and graphics.

I know I can't speak for everyone, but when I say it has a deep story, I'm not only talking about the main plot of the game, but also the stories of the characters. This FF has a huge lineup of characters and as others have said, the story of each of them is very well written and well developed.

The plot-story is nothing new. Empire tries to take over the world, big twist in the middle & down with the empire, evil maniac "ruins" world, kill maniac, roll credits.

The character-story is where the deepness truly comes into play as you explore the past of each of the characters. (I'll try to be as spoiler free here as I can...) You start with Terra and over the course of the game you learn where she came from and her connection with the Espers. Later you meet Celes who was also used by the Empire. You meet Cid and have *the most* touching moment in Final Fantasy with him and Celes. You meet Gau and learn about the "wild child's" father and how he got the way he is. You meet Setzer and learn of his lost love. You meet the Asassin for hire, Shadow and learn of his past. There is the struggle between Edgar and Sabin and the rule over Figaro. And who could forget learning what Kefka did to Cyan's home. There is so much more there too and as you play, the characters begin to develop relationships with each others that add even more to the mix.

I think that is why we say it has a deep story.

I don't know. I'm gonna call it detailed and well explained, but not deep. Well, that's just me. I don't want to argue now. I'm tired. :?

I agree.  It wasn't very deep, but it was really good.  I prefer FFIV over VI.  Cecil's personality was better than that of VI's main character.  Although, I haven't beaten VI yet, and I have beaten IV.  So maybe it's just that.  The graphics in VI were better, and more detailed (But they still sucked), but I don't really care about graphics.  The gameplay in IV is also better in VI, only because the menus seemed a little more simple, and not so distracting from what you were supposed to be concentrating on.

okay, ill admit it, i was a sap for shadow's story. even though he hardly said much, he had so much story, and his subtle relationship with a couple of other characters in the party was just so... i don't know, it was jsut nice and i liked it a lot
