Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy VIII are both Love IT OR HATE IT GAMES and both games are critizied for their battle systems
Better Title: Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy XII
Im'ma have to go with Final Fantasy VIII.
I liked XII's combat system, but everything else was uninteresting; the characters, the plot, even the music was boring at times.
Hard comparision at least for me. imo FFXII seemed to be having a better battle system, better loot and equipment engine and the dungeons were pretty entertaining. FFVIII on the other hand seems to be having a better storyline, more FFish feel and the characters had more life in them, not to mention that its music was very apealing and fits the FF style very well.
So it depends which of the features interest u more. If u care more about the story, characters and the environment than the battle system and dungeons then FFVIII is for u, otherwise go for FFXII.
What's the matter? Don't like good music?equimanthorn01
XII's soundtrack was alright. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but that was nothing compared to Nobuo Uematsu's works.
Very close, but I'll say VIII.
I wasn't a huge fan of XII's music, either. the only song I liked was the Esper Battle music in XII. VIII had more than 1 song that was memorable for me and likable.
I did not like the plot in XII; I liked VIII's more, though VIII's really isn't anything to write home about, either, IMO. It also helps that some the characters in VIII were actually interesting and actually had some personality and had some developement.
Gameplay is where it is tied for me. Both games had meh-worthy main quests, BUT had very entertaining optional quests. Filling up the License board was fun and so was managing the GF's.
IT is not meant to be compared to Uematsu's work. IT is very different. It's like comparing Pantera to Skiunny Puppy. It cannot be done. They are too different. Both are great thoughequimanthorn01
I don't think the difference in style matters much, as I wasn't directly comparing the songs. Just stating that I liked one composer way better than the other.

You are comparing them though. You go into it with a pre concievedc notion of what Final Fantasy music should be. It is no0t hte simpler stuff that Uematsu does. IT is far more complex wothj a lot more brass[QUOTE="Gamer4Iife"][QUOTE="equimanthorn01"]IT is not meant to be compared to Uematsu's work. IT is very different. I didn't think it was "bad" by any means, but nothing memorable or special, either.
That is probably because it is far more complex. It does not get stuck in your head as easily. It is beautiful thoughequimanthorn01
It was beautiful music, but also boring music, IMO. It didn't get me in the mood or got me interested...

A lot critics who reviewed the OST said that Sakimoto relied to heavily on orchestral composition(even though he's really good at it in my opinion) rather then softer melodies previously seen in Final Fantasy. They also critized that some of the songs felt like they had no direction and that there was no emotional delivery which is one of my faults with the soundtrack. You don't hear anything like People From the North Pole(Final Fantasy X), Who Am I(Final Fantasy VII), Gustaberg(Final Fantasy XI), or even Breezy(Final Fantasy VIII). The one thing done right in the OST was the battle music and some of the more classical themes. I'll admit that it's a good OST in comparison to many other videogame/anime OSTs out on the market. But it's personally not my favorite.
I believe FG imported Final Fantasy XII and I imported the OST. We definitely had different perspectives on the music simply because he was listening to it while playing the game, while I was just using my headphones. After it released in North America a few months later I still couldn't attach myself to most of the music.
0_o. It's another one of this "which game is better" board. *mumbles incoherently*
Well... . . .
FFVIII: ...
FFXII: I loved Balthier! ...
Both have their pros and cons but VIII wins it for me!
XII tried too hard with the new battle system im afraid!!!

No comment about VIII ? :(
Somehow, I always forget the things I like about it. I'm just overwhelmed by the annoying Quistis, that I forget the good things. Like the dance scene. And Zell. And Laguna. And Rinoa. :)

Whaat ? I found Rinoa way more annoying than Quistis. :P
*does a double take* Did I write that I liked Rinoa? Crap, never mind that! I just remembered: I hate all the female leads in FFVIII. Must have been tired when I wrote that, sorry people. :P twilightlullaby

High fives on that comment!
Jealous? Are you just saying that because...I'm a girl? No, I'm not really jealous of Selphie or Quistis. Rinoa, maybe just a teensy little bit. But only a little mind you. I hate the fact that she got to dance under the stars with a mildly cute guy (I don't like Squall in that way). Stuff like that never happens to me!twilightlullaby

Heh heh, do I sense some jealousy? *Music Note*PlaWeird
From my side, not at all :P Female leads just are an epic fail.
Hey! It's just a little bit because when I was little, having a dance like that was my dream. Not like I could find anyone...that's why it ticks me off. But I'm joking a bit too. I feel kind of bad, having gone on when you were joking. :(twilightlullaby
