Ooh, this is a good topic, i'm kinda disappointed in the fact that the best FF hasn't had a mention yet (unless i missed it)
1 - Final Fantasy Tactics: 9.8/10 - Easily the best storyline of any of the final fantasies and maybe any RPG/Strategy RPG ever, and probably the best music as well. Great graphics for its time and most importantly magnificent unparalleled gameplay. Simple choice for first place.
2 - Final Fantasy VI (FF3 US): 9.7/10 - Almost pure RPG perfection. The best storyline of the numbered final fantasies and the biggest cast of characters. ALL characters have their backgrounds fleshed out, and the game looked fantastic (for its time) also. More classic music and the best villain in any game - ever - period! Great all around game.
3 - Final Fantasy V: 9.5/10 - The SNES FF's are the best, without a doubt. If graphics was all there is in games, than every 360 game would get 9/10 or better. Further explored the 'job' system of FF4 by allowing ever character to change their job on the go (between battles), and with a staggering choice of over 20 jobs, each with their own special abilities, this game was a masterpiece as well with more great music from Nobuo Uematsu, and a death scene that actually makes sense given spells like 'cure' and 'life 2'.
4 - Final Fantasy VII: 9.3/10 - Only 9.3 you ask? Yes, that being said 9.3 is still a great score, just as this is a great game. Breaking the system through into 3D for the first time, this FF just didn't seem to have as much heart as the previous two entries in the series. Sephiroth made you WANT to finish the game, and the music and graphics (once again for their time) were awesome. Quality with a cloud's sword sized Q.
5 - Final Fantasy X: 9.2/10 - Probably the most hyped FF. If not for all the hype this would probably be number one on this list. Still a fantastic presentation. Mind-blowing graphics, and for the first time full speech in a FF. For its time, better graphics than any other FF, but it seemed to come at a cost of the music and storyline - not much of a cost though as they were still up there with any other RPG, but seemingly not up to FF standards. Awesome gameplay still makes this a must own title, along with all of the games above it on the list (and the FF's that didn't make it also).
These are my personal views and you might not agree, but thats what a forum is for...
It's Game ON!!!
