If Golden Sun was released in the good old days of the SNES, do you think it would have been accliamed as much as Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger?

Do you think it would have become a classic?

I think it will be a classic by know but... never ever it would have surpassed chrono. remember that chrono was really popular not only for the cool story but for the akira toriyamas desings! (akira toriyama designed Dragon ball characters) so it helped it a lot on becoming a classic... at that time rgps werent THAT popular

It's a very hard thing to say. Golden sun is indeed a good game, but not really considered a classic, it lacks a bit of character developpement and deep storyline, just the kind Chrono Trigger had.

dont even use chrono trigger and golden sun in the same sentence ;).

I do think golden sun would be a popular game in that era, but I doubt it would be considered a true classic

I never played the Secret of Mana games but im sure Chrono is far from better than those

The Golden Sun were amazing like the old FF's .....

..... but Chrono Trigger was like i don't m know Back to the Future meeting DBZ

.... and there is nothing like it .

Secret of mana had an amazing multiplayer.. But if you played it single player it was kind of dull.

Ahh you guys are to caught up in past games, Chrono Trigger is arguably the best game ever, but that still shouldn't stop you from recognizing that the Golden Sun series is epic and will definately go down as a great classic (especially if 3 ever comes out) As for Mana, its good but idk, it seems more like a Zelda game and less like an actual console rpg to me so i hate comparing it to FF and CT

Personally Golden Sun just didn't cut it for me... It was fun at times; but it didn't have that epic feel that chrono trigger had.

well even if it didn't have that "epic" feel to you, you have to admit that how they put the series together with you being the "good guys" in the first game and then switching roles to being the "bad guys" was genius, and personally i have never played an rpg that has ever pulled that off.

Golden sun definately had a lot of originality, which is probably why so many people love the series.

it had a lot of originallity but it also had that mid 1990's rpg feel to it, i am pretty sure that even though golden sun was influenced by games like chrono trigger, FFVI & VII, and dragon warrior, golden sun excelled over all of those games in terms of plot development and gameplay mechanics. First of all, all of the old games on SNES were fairly straightforward plots which were all somewhat predictable, a bad guy trying to take over the world, good guys need to stop them. GS however, starts you off thinking that, but by the begining of the second game you are the bad guys trying to "destroy" the world. except really you find out you are trying to save the world. Who can honestly say they saw that coming? Also the magic system in GS was probably the most innovative magic system i have ever used, and somehow it avioded the tediousness of a system like Chrono Cross's elemental magic. The way you can mix and match djinn in GS to pretty much give any character any class and any psynergy is better than the techs in CT and the materia in FFVII. Also the use of psynergy outside of the battles is a stand alone way of incorporating magic into the world outside of fighting. Finally the graphics of golden sun put me right back into the days of playing Harvest moon 64 and back to nature. CT, FF, and mana cannot even come close to the beautiful idealistic world that the developers made in GS. The only thing that i think those games have on GS is that they don't have turn based combat, but utilize an active battle mode which effectively adds a completely new element to rpg battle strategy. I like many others had a nostalgic idealized view of the old rpgs like CT and FFVII, but taking an objective view of GS in relationship to those games, it is easy for any critically thinking person to see that golden sun not only holds its own against CT and FF, but in many ways GS surpases the rpg greats of old. so in 10 years or so when all of the evaluations are said and done i know GS will be considered a classic, and i wouldn't be surprised if people start to rank it higher than CT or other SNES greats.

The dialogue of golden sun was good, but not superior. In chrono trigger the overall story was generic; but the dialogue and character development was amazing. I had no connection to the characters in Golden Sun while playing; yet by the end of chrono trigger, it felt as if I actually "knew" the characters.

And regarding battle system-- Golden sun was too easy imo, The most I ever had to retry a battle was once. This might be a positive aspect to some; but not to me.

yeah because grinding is sooooooo much fun. Plus i agree that the character dvlp in GS was not the best but seriously neither was CT, its pretty hard to have decent character dvlpment when you have a silent protagonist (which both games do). I think that if you are looking for character development the absolute best game for that is tales of symphonia, never before or since that game have i actually felt really connected to the characters or their struggle. I think the only reason you think CT has it is because like i said before, you have a nostalgic idealized view of CT considering its like over 10 yrs old. (i mean come on...what wasn't great in the nineties?)

also in CT your view of the characters (with the exception of magnus) is pretty much the exact same as the initial view of them when they are introduced. In GS your entire outlook on almost every character and their motives is questioned and changed at some point during the course of the game. Though i would agree that in the first game they do remain fairly static, in the second game the characters really evolve and your understanding of what is happening is suddenly revealed when you realize who is good and bad.

As to the battles, i never said that they were hard in golden sun, i said that was the one part that i like better about the other games were their battle systems. as to your remark on hard battles though, who wants to sit around on a that is too tough, all that does is push you furthur away from the story line as your frustration builds. i know a couple people who can't get through some rpgs just for that reason, and grinding lvls is stupid and an annoying waste of time. i would much rather have a well thought out developing story than a couple of really hard battles that just crank up my hours played on the game.

I might have a biased view a chrono trigger, considering I played it about ten years ago; but you have to admit frog is one of the coolest characters ever. (sure, he's not a dynamic character; but who would want him to change when hes so cool to start out with?)

FFIV had the perfect difficulty to me, the bosses were tough; but grinding was not required. And I too hate grinding in games (FFIII for instance was a pain...). Chrono trigger was the first turn based rpg that I played that didnt have random battles, which is another reason why I enjoyed the game more then others. Random battles can really become frustrating, In golden sun it was ok because that battles were quick and not particularly challenging either.. But it the FF's the random battles can really become frustrating, because the battles can be outrageously difficult (near the end of the game).

I never got very far in tales of symph, so I cant comment there.. The whole battle system seemed somewhat flawed to me.

Your right about FF games requiring grinding...im playing FFV right now and it is getting a bit ridiculous now at the end, plus FF games have way to many random battles. Even though GS has random battles they don't seem to ever annoy me to the level of the FF games.

As to the tales battle engine, it is pretty consistent throughout the tales games, and personally i find it to be way better than turn based battles. you get to really control the speed of the battle, and you actually have to be quick and able to think and change strat really quickly. if you have tales you should really invest the time to get past your initial dislike of the battle system because it is definately the best rpg on the GCN and in my opinion one of the top 5 ever, the story and characters are some of the best i have ever seen, if you can't play through it at least watch the anime OVA so you don't miss the awesome story (though i don't think the OVA does it justice)

I was playing the game multiplayer, and the camera only follows the main character in battles; which made bosses friggin impossible because I couldnt see what the hell I was doing..... So I got pissed off at the game and gave up. :P

Tales of symph is probably ok single player; so I should give it another try.

woah! that's a lot of info. didn't read much but i did go though it at someplaces.

but if u put CT against GS..... i would have to say CT. yeah well, GS is a great game (too bad i saw only parts of GS2 and not a trace of GS1) but putting it up to a classic like CT? that's SUICIDE!

yeah the random battles in GS are a bit bugging but battles in CT were never so. i enjoyed exploring dungeons, new and old. never knowing for sure if something really cool was just waiting for me in a treasure chest. ahh... good times, fun times.

and the music in CT was WICKED AWESOME! i still like the millenial fair theme. wishi had an mp3 of it

no doubt GS is a great game but my vote goes for CT!
