I thought the GBA was rendered obsolete (basically 'dead') when the DS was released and had full backward compatibility with GBA games. It's a similar situation with the Wii and the GameCube.
All stores around me still sell them, so they certainly aren't dead to stores. Walmart, Gamestop, Target, Kmart, ToysRUs, etc all carry the Gameboy Advance (Micro and/or SP). I find it annoying playing GBA games on the DS Lite, that's why I have a Micro.
