Eh...WTF are you talking about? Sports games may suck on the GBA, but there are some really good sports games on the consoles, like the NBA 2K series for instance.
If you want my sincere opinion, FIFA 2004 is an average sports game, at least its GBA version... i mean, in graphics you lose tons of things, but the gameplay is basically the same as any other version... i've tested also the Backyard series, which can be a bit childish, for sure, but it's not that bad, at least for killing some time... i would recommend Backyard Hockey out of all... but i don't know, the true quality of sports games in GBA isn't really top notch, about that particular aspect Spirit_Warriors is right, GBA wasn't made for sports games... 8)
That's a very good suggestion as well... i didn't remember that great game, because i was thinking about "conventional" sports games... but it's very well thought of... :)
