It's a good renter...rent it for a week or two. Definitely not the best RPG on the Cube, but still a good one.

Most people are going to say that the best rpgs for the GCN are Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, and Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. Not many will actually recommend FF:CC as a single player experience. Why not check out the reviews of the games I mentioned and see what you think. That is, unless you've already played those, in which case: get yourself a PS2. It's tough, but it's the truth.

Either Paper Mario or Tales of Symphonia are the best really...not too much room for debate. Baten Kaitos is good, but different. And if you want, give Lost Kingdoms a try.

Oh, Skies of Arcadia is also a great RPG that was originally for DC, but its going to be hard to find even on the GC. And Phantasy Star Online...this game was actually fun for me offline as it was online(never played online on the GC, but did on my DC).

SoAL is a flat-out better game than ToS.

I think the battle for supremacy is between Skies of Arcadia Legends and Paper Mario: TYD.

However, I haven't played Fire Emblem yet. I think BK is better than ToS also.

Tales of Symphonia is an excellent game. It has great combat, long play time and lots of little features that will keep you playing. The plot is decent but the dialogue is very cliched. I've heard Skies of Arcadia is great as well.

I used to have Crystal Chronicles. It is immensely dull on single-player, has a poor combat system and I didn't discover any kind of plot and I played for about 10 hours.

As everyone else has said Crystal Chronicles isnt a good single player rpg, i played it and it was boring. You should try Paper Mario 2, or Tales of Symphonia.

Yes, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, and Paper Mario: TTYD are great RPGs (although I played more of the N64 Paper Mario), but I've got to give Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance some forum time. Great battle system, interesting story and dialogue, and the mortality of each character adds to the strategy. ToS, Baten Kaitos, and Fire Emblem are all ahead of FF:CC, I'm afraid.

Here are the 4 facts that seperate FF:CC from most RPGs.

1) You get to make your character!
This is like a MMO here. No, it's not simply choosing a name for your character. What I'm talking about is you choose your job, your race, your clothes and your gender. Race determines your abilities, whether you are a melee, caster or healer in this game. That's racism, but that's another story...

2) You choose where to go!
That's exactly how I said it. You don't have to do some jobs and such that most RPGs force down your throat. Instead, you are given 14 dungeons and it's up to YOU to decide which you want to enter.

3) You are not the story.
That is to say that you aren't the main figure. Instead, you learn about the story from cutscenes, diaries and dialogue. While this may seem impersonal, it will seem as if they refer to you as a person, not as Cloud, Mario or whoever. It gives you the freedom to do as you wish, instead of taking the role of the character and being forced into whatever you need to do.

4) Bring your friends!
Yea, you might not have 4 GBAs and cables around with you, but it's not much more expensive than buying 4 controllers anyway. This game requires a lot of teamwork, whether it's reading off maps, coordinating spell fusions or trading key items.

So if you find any of these features interesting, perhaps you should give FF:CC a try. Instead of a linear game structure, plot path and singleplayer restriction, FF:CC is the opposite of that. The game gives you control of who you are, what you can do and who you can play with.

Symphonia without a doubt, but CC is amazing with at least 2 other people. If you own all the paraphernalia, that is.

Crystal Chronicles is a solid game imo, but I agree that multiplayer makes it much more fun. Still worth a rental for single player, however.

Out of the Cube rpgs I own (didn't include CC), these are my rankings.

1. Tales of Symphonia

2. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

3. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

4. Baten Kaitos

I loved Tales of Symphonia and Paper Mario 2. Skies of Arcadia is also a good choice if you can find it. Maybe also give Baten Kaitos a try?

First off, I'm one of those stubborn classic gamers who still considers "Legend of Zelda" an rpg series, and nothing anyone can say will change that.

I agree with those obvious ones that have been mentioned and rank them as such:

  1. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
  2. Baten Kaitos Origins
  3. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  4. Paper Mario: The 1,000 Year Door
  5. Tales of Symphonia

I would also add the following:

  1. Phantasy Star Online Plus+
  2. Lost Kingdoms
  3. Lost Kingdoms II
  4. Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
  5. Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance

The one I would recommend staying well and clear of is "Skies of Arcadia".  It is a shody port of an old DreamCast game, and it wasn't all that good eons ago when it first came out.  It'll cost you a tone since there aren't alot of copies, and its not nearly as good as any of those on either list above.

wow, I couldn't disagree with you more.

most of the GC's RPG's you mentioned are crap compared to Skies of Arcadia Legends. Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, Baten Kaitos, and ToS are worth getting but still none top the GC's "Directors Cut" of SoA.

The Baldurs Gate game is a complete joke, and is certainly not worth having its name associated with the PC's Shadows of Amn, arguably the finest RPG ever made.

Tales of Symphonia is very entertaining(though the dungeons are complicated), but there aren't many RPGs

on GC.

Feel free to disagree with me of course, we all have different opinions, but I have to stand by mine.  I wasted $50 on "Skies of Arcadia" way back when I had my Sega DreamCast, and it wasn't even good THEN.

I'm not just trying to be a jerk here either.  Even though I knew I had hated the game when I bought it for the SDC, I still rented it for my NGC just to give it another chance, and honestly it bored me to tears, not to mention the graphics still look just as blocky as they did back in the day.  I didn't find the weapon system interesting either (color of the blade stuff).

For the Gamecube, this is my list of great RPG titles, in no particular order:

Skies of Arcadia: Legends - I owned the Dreamcast and loved this title, alas, that system is now broken.

Baten Kaidos - The deck building is fun since I play Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh, and the the graphics are amazing. Dialouge could use a bit of work, though.

Tales of Symphonia - Again, the graphics are great. Real-time action battles are the bread and butter and very challenging.

Paper Mario - Reminds me of the old SNES Mario RPG, which I hope comes onto the Wii Virtual Console. Actions can be hilarious.
