On the April 10th 2007 edition of the "Hotspot", Jeff Gerstmann was explaining how the Gamecube and GBA section of Gamespot's web site days are numbered. Therefore, I was just what wondering what everyone thought of the Gamecube at this point in its history.

While the Gamecube came in third place in the last generation, I think it may have been the mot successful third place in the history of consoles. The Gamecube's library is full of excellent games, and it had much better third party support than the previous Nintendo console, the N64. While many people may feel that the Mario and Zelda experiences on the Gamecube are lesser experiences, it is clear that Metriod Prime, Resident Evil 4 and Super Smash Bros. clearly dominate this system as stand out games within the scope of all consoles. In fact, Metriod Prime, Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 all won Gamespot's "Game of the Year" award, making it the most critically acclaimed system of the previous generation.

Luckily, with the Wii, many players are discovering the Gamecube library for the first time. I think that history will show that the Gamecube was anything but a loser, and will eventually take its place among the greatest systems of all time.

One thought though.....where will we go to discuss Gamecube games once Gamepot closes the Gamecube section of the site?

Any thoughts?

I guess General Games Discussion? Or perhaps they will create a new Classic Gaming forum?

On a somewhat-related note, is the same thing happening to the XBox?

You'll go to the Wii board, just as N64 discussion was allowed in the GC board and PS1 discussion was allowed in the PS2 board once they were dissolved. It's more in line with what happened with the PS1 and PS2 boards, since the Wii is backwards compatible with the 'Cube.

I am completely rediscovering the GC games on my wii.  Right now all i play is gamecube cuz I'm not interested in any of the current wii games since I beat Zelda.  I am currently playing Zelda OoT on the collectors addition, Tales of Symphonia, Resident Evil 4, and Paper Mario TYD.  These four games all at once should keep me busy until Metroid comes out for the Wii.

Gamecube was an awsome system; I think it was underated.  I'm glad the wii helped me play games like RE4, TYD, and ToS for the GC that I never played before.

the gamecube was ok, but comparing it to the ps2 and xbox shows it was a dissappointment in my mind, so i got a ps3 and am currently giving nintendo the cold shoulder and not buying the wii...

i prefer the gamecube over the PS2 and XBOX. the games for gamecube were ok. SSBM, RE4, and the zelda games were all really good. the others were a bit "ehh" though. i started the gaming life with the N64 and is obvious that i would get a gamecube. i'm not getting new consoles any time soon, but gamecube was pretty good

I agree. There's still quite some activity on the Gamecube forums. And there are still games coming out, not many, but a few.

There's still plenty to talk about when it comes to Gamecube. . . .in my opinion. If it does get thrown in the garbage, then yeah, I guess it'll just become part of General Game discussion. I'm sure no one will stop talking about gamecube. it's just an awesome system, and I don't know why people would throw away a perfectly good forum. I think they should keep it, if not, then I'll see ya in general game discussion.

The Gamecube was a good system.  I don't regret getting it, I had some good times with it.
I would describe it as moderately entertaining.   I'd recommend a PS2 over it to anyone though, I think I'd even recommend an X Box over it.

If you want to go cheap, its the way to go.  You get what you pay for here.  The biggest thing it ever had was RE4.  GC's version was better than Ps2's imo, so that's probably the biggest reason to own one.  Other than that it offers next to nothing for RPG gamers, fighting gamers, and FPS lovers.  That is GC's greatest fault, it has a low selection of games.  It doesn't cover every genre very well.

I'd hate to leave on a bad note though, so I got to say something good about it:
The games that I did play, I found were always top-notch in terms of quality.  Especially the 1st party games.  Capcom also did an excellent job (better than anyone else anyway) in supporting the cube.

Nintendo knows how to make a great system, and knows how to keep it supplied with top-quality games.  Unfortunately, they had to do it almost by themsleves this time.
Despite the weak 3rd party dev support, they still survived, mainly on the strengths of their own games.  That says alot.  You got to respect that no matter who you are.  I strongly doubt Sony or Microsoft could ever survive with that little 3rd party support.

They did good.  They made it to the next round, and they earned it.  It's great to see the Wii doing so well, and hopefully the devs step up to support it.  Things are looking really good for the Big N right now.

I agree! I think it's still a little too early to close down the Gamecube forum just yet. Not all Gamecube users have moved over to the Wii just yet so there's still things to talk about.

Nintendo's success with the Gamecube proved that the industry is now large enough to successfully support 3 platforms at the same time.  I am a little bit disapointed that the Wii isn't a bit beefier then it is, but I understand Nintendo's desire to go above and beyond what the GC did.

... I just hope there isn't a bunch of "What's your favorite SSBM character?" and "Should I get RE4?" questions clogging up the Wii board.
