MGS purists seem to hate it, but it's my favorite single-player GC game of all time. As long as you like good, involved plots and crazy slow-mo cutscenes, you'll love the game.

Your first play through will not be near 5 hours.

If you're just starting to play the Metal Gear series, this is a good place to start.

10 hours first time through, once you know everything, skip the cutscenes, you can replay it in around 4 or 5 hours.

Definitely get Metal Gear Solid. It has the best story any game. Final Fantasy comes close too.

I think that if you want to get into the MGS series you should really start off with the original on the PS1, imo it's better than twin snakes.

Don't get me wrong, I own MGS:TS and enjoy playing it, but it always amazes me that poeple refer to the actual story as "amazing".  I like the action, I like the gameplay, and I like the presentation....but I honestly found the story of poor quality. To me, its always seemed way to overdramatic and over the top, and many of the "surprises" seem overly scripted and cliched.

Maybe its just me though. Great game, but a weak story.

It's a hell of a game. Maybe someone who has already played it on PSX won't say the same 'cause this game is very faithful to the original, unlike REmake, but if you haven't ever played it before (just like me), it'll be a great game.

Yeah, but it's the stylized feel that makes it so attractive. And you have to admit, it does take itself more seriously than other video game stories...

I dunno FUNKYHAMPSTER, I certainly respect your viewpoint, I guess I just had a different reaction personally. To me, the game almost felt like it was poking fun at itself at times, and the gimmicky stuff, while fun, took something away from any sense of intensity, at least in my opinion.

The game was alot of fun to play, but I honestly drowned out 75% of the dialogue sequences. They were just brutal at times in terms of sloppy writting, cheesy zingers, and overly dramatic rants. I especially found Otacon to be utterly annoying (i shudder every time I get to his "i love my japanese anime" segment).

Also, while I loved the gameplay and graphical updates of the NGC version, I could have done with a little less of the matrix slowmotion clips.

I haven't come across it lately either, but that seems to be happening with most GameCube games.

the game's as long as it was on the psx, so i guess that's up to you to determine if it's long or short. I can complete the game in no time, but i've done it so many times it's childs play to me. i it for $14 in great condition at a place called GameWorld...don't bother going to EB or Gamestop, they just won't have it...try a lesser known game store or try ebay. i think MGS was one of the best in the series, and this is just that with better graphics and gameplay.
