Just got my Gamecube a couple weeks ago.  Picked up a system and some games for a great price and have been really enjoying it.  I know I'm a little late (alot late) but better late than never.

Games I currently have are Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart DD, Resident Evil 4 and Rogue Squadron II.  These games are all fantastic.  Me and my six year old daughter have been having a blast with both Mario games and I've really, really enjoyed RE 4 and Rogue Squadron.  These 4 games are really some of the best I've ever played on a console.

Been doing some research and really not sure what direction to go in next and hoping some people that have played alot of games on the cube might be able to give me some solid recommendations.  I know what some of the higher rated games are based upon Gamespot rankings, but sometimes it's just better to hear it from another source.

Generally, I'm not a real big fan of role-playing games.  I've been looking hard at Paper Mario TYD because both me and my daughter are Mario fans, but just not sure I would like it if it's a heavy role-playing game.  By the same token, been looknig at Super Smash Bros Melee, but also just not sure since I'm not a big fighting game fan either (ala Mortal Kombat).  And not sure if my daughter would really get into the fighting aspects.

Have looked at Metroid Prime....kinda on the fence.  Sorta reminds me of Halo and I honestly didn't care for Halo much.  Not big on Sci-Fi shooters beyond Star Wars.

Have thought about Eternal Darkness....just don't know too much about the game.  Sounds a little weird...I do like horror genre games though.  Have also been thinking about Resident Evil Remake but I'm afraid it may be a letdown after playing RE 4.

Generally, games I've had on systems are sports related (Madden, NBA Live, etc).  I'm definately getting Madden 08 when/if it comes and i'll probably pick up NBA Live 06.

I'm generally pretty picky when it comes to adventure/plaform/shooter games.  I've pretty much stuck with the Mario platform games and Star Wars games as the only adventure/platform games I've bought.  Resident Evil 4 did blow me away though.

Just wondering if anybody has any other games they think I should look at based upon what I've said....either for just me or something for both me and my daughter.  Maybe my thoughts about Paper Mario or Melee are wrong....Or I'm open to checking out any other games.

Really appreciate the thoughts.

Eternal Darkness - it's more of an PC st-yled Adventure game with horror overtones. There's not a ton of action in it (like RE4), it's more of a story-based, laidback, puzzlesolver (the graphics are extremely dated compared to RE4)

Paper Mario - yeah it's pretty much an RPG and I doubt your daughter would understand or enjoy it.. but there is platforming elements and a great story, the battle system is engaging, its a long game too, so i'm not sure if you're into that or not

Super Smash Bros. - it's a 4 player fighting game with a strong single player too, it's nothing like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but I doubt you would enjoy it either way if you don't like fighters...

Metroid Prime - I hate sci-fi based stuff too, but I loved Metroid Prime.. It's nothing like Halo, and yeah it's a first person shooter, but where as Halo excelled at multiplayer, Metroid Prime excelled at single player, making a great adventure game, similar to Zelda in a way but in a first person perspective. Metroid Prime II has multiplayer but it's pretty basic, but i think you should get that one first anyways, it's better

Resident Evil Remake - the graphics are amazing, but totally different compared to RE4. The controls and camera is the biggest difference, the camera is fixed for each room, and your character moves like a tank. there's more puzzle solving elements to it and the game is slightly harder, but if you like ****c horror adventure this is the game to get...

other games you should check out:
Zelda: Four Swords - great multiplayer if you guys have GBA's and GBA links, but the singleplayer is still really fun and is almost an a completely different game... so if you enjoy simple puzzle solving check this out

Tales of Symphonia - yeah it's an RPG, but its a GREAT RPG.. also it has multiplayer.. you have to wait for a battle to happen to play in multiplayer, but it should still be fun for both you and your daughter.. maybe..

Pikmin - real time strategy, short game, but fun while it lasted. it requires a ton of desision making and puzzle solving since you're under a timer (it might be a little hard for a kid though)

Luigi's Mansion - this was a pretty short game, but I had a blast with it all the way through.. it has PC adventure feel to it, and it's also sorta creepy in a way... it's not multiplayer, but I can see two people playing through this

Viewtiful Joe 2 - I haven't played this yet, but I loved the first one and I'm pretty sure this is multiplayer

any Mario Sports or Mario Party games - Mario Party gets a bad rap for some reason, but these games are FUN FUN FUN multiplayer games.   If you can get 3 other people to play these, then you'll have a blast... Mario sports vary, but they're all fun mulitplayer games aswell

Metroid Prime: It's not much like Halo or other FPS's because it's more about exploration. The game's pretty cheap in price, so it's worth a look. Smash Brothers Melee: I don't like fighting games either, but I love this game. It's a lot different than most fighters, so you should give it a chance. Maybe try renting it first. Battalion Wars: Excellent mix of strategy and action. Pretty short game, but a blast while it lasts. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: Pretty good adventure game. Some tedious parts here and there, but worth checking out.

well well well...

all those games you have stated, like REmake and Metroid Prime is the reason I love my gamecube..

Metroid Prime has a real great storyline and is a blast playing it... REmake is a Resident Evil 1, which I think was better than RE:4 in terms of STORYLINE.... it also feels much more haunting and real to me.. for some odd reason.. RE:4 was a great game, but I loved REmake because that's the ORIGINAL game.. nothing more scarier than a mansion filled with TONS of rooms just waiting to be searched...

now I recommened you get the best game for the gamecube: METAL GEAR SOLID: THE TWIN SNAKES

it is by far the best CONSOLE game I've ever played, has real cool cutscenes and even some humour :)

check those games out man, you don't wanna pass on them I gaurantee it...

if you enjoy playing stuff like Rogue Squadron.. go with these games I just mentioned...

Really appreciate all the thoughts.

Only hesitation on Paper Mario is that I really don't care for role-playing games.  For example, I normally like almost every Star Wars game...but I hated Knights of the Old Republic.  I really have liked all the Mario traditonal scrolling platform games but just not sure I'd get into Paper Mario.  It seems like I might like some of it but also not like some of it.

Resident Evil 1 is a strong possibility.....Metal Gear is also something I hadn't even given any thought to.

And I'm still giving some consideration to Super Smash Melee.  Not big on fighting games but it still might be fun playing and it looks like it could be something that has good replay value.

While it's mostly RPG, there are three Super Mario Bros.-style mini-stages in the game that play almost exactly like SMB only you play as Bowser instead of Mario. You might enjoy those, but it'll take some time to get to them.

Given that you didn't like Star Wars KOTOR (which is one of the best games ever IMO) I don't think that you should get Paper Mario. Although I love the Paper Mario series, you've already stated that you don't like RPGs and Paper Mario is a genuine RPG. If your tastes in gaming would change at some point I really recommend this title though.

In general, check out all the games that were mentioned, but NOT the RPGs (e.g. Tales of Symphonia).

You said in your original post that Eternal Darkness is 'weird' (compared to RE), well that's because the RE series generally avoids the supernatural, whereas Eternal Darkness is clearly supernatural but still based in 'our' world, which makes it awkward IMO.

Please note though, that the older REs play very differently from RE4 (just check out some of the player reviews).

For YOU and your daughter I would go for games like Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing, Dancing Stage Mario Mix (could be a LOT of fun with your kid) the Donkey Konga series and one of the Mario Parties and possibly Zelda: Wind Waker and Star Fox Adventures (both could be a little scary at some points) etc.

For yourself: all Zelda's, if you like something better than chess: Fire Emblem, Super Smash Bros, REmake (first try this one), then check out the others, the other Star Wars Rogue Leader title (either Rogue Leader or Rebel Strike), the Metroids if you like 'em(read reviews first! I didn't enjoy that game as much as others did) and F-Zero/Wave-Race/1080 if you like Sports games etc.

(I almost mentioned every GC game I own... I surely have forgotten some, but you could always check out my games and reviews, just leave out my RPGs as you won't like 'em)

I recommend these games: Metroid Prime. It is very different than Halo, it's more like an adventure game. It's an awesome game, just try it out! Metal Gear Solid: the Twin snakes. Very good if you are a metal gear fan. It's almost as good as the original. One of my favourite games. Super Smash Bros Melee. If you like fighting games. Eternal Darkness. Its an unike and amazing game. Makes you see things in a different thing than before. Resident evil. I got the game, but it's so scary that I almost doesn't dare to play it! The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker. If you like Zelda games, buy this. ;)

Never got into the Zelda games so I'll probably avoid them.

Thinking hard about Melee.  One holdback is that I really don't think I'll be able to get much use out of multi-player.  Daughter and I might play a little but can't imagine that will be real interesting to her.  And not sure I'll spend alot of time with the single player mode.

Leaning toward Resident Evil 1 (Remake).  Not expecting it to be as good as RE 4, but even if it's half as good, it'll still be a good game.  Always have had a soft spot for horror adventure games.

Really just trying to hold myself over until Madden 2008 comes....

Super Smash Bros. Meleeis worth checking out even if you aren't a fighting fan. If you wanted a more traditional fighter, though, Soul Calibur II is where it's at.

Though for action/adventure, StarFox Adventures is probably worth reading up on. It's pretty good.

Aside from that, I'd reccomend tracking down The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition if you haven't had your fill of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask from the N64 days

Super Monkey Ball 2 - one of the best games I've ever played.  Has a great single player puzzle aspect and an even greater multiplayer side with a variety of games that should keep you and your daughter busy for a while.  The game even has a game at the end of the game when the credits are rolling - you can tell those behind the game actually cared about providing a great gaming experience.

Animal Crossing is an amazing experience.  One player at a time though but you can have up to four players playing it in turn.

Pinball Hall of Fame is a great pinball game with a variety of tables.

Pool Paradise is fun pool game with a couple nice sub games like darts.

Puyo Pop Fever and Cubivore are kinda fun multiplayer puzzle games.

Spider-Man 2 is a awesome but only if you're a fan.

Super smash bros. melee:  This game is amazingly unique and is nothing like mortal combat or fighting games similar to that.  probable the best multiplayer player game i have ever played.

Mario party games:  Although somewhat of a bad reputation this game is a great multiplayer game filled with fun and easy to learn mini games.

Prince of persia the two thrones:  I thouroghly enjoyed this game from the beginning to end, with solid puzzles and good graphics.

Fire emblem path of radiance:  Although this game is in the rpg realm i love this game and you should definitly consider getting this game due to it's good graphics and awesome gameplay.

2 of my personal favourites that haven't been mentioned yet (probably because they are multiplatform) ; - Freedom Fighters (http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/freedomfighters/index.html) which is an underrated action gem. The whole concept behind this game is fantastic and it sounds, plays and looks amazing. - Burnout 2: Point of Impact (http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/driving/burnout2pointofimpact/index.html) which is the game that got me into the racing genre. It's fast, furious and above all a lot of fun to play. About Metroid Prime; I'm not into sci-fi shooters either. I didn't like Halo *and* Metroid Prime (holds up flameshield) but both games are completely different. Since I seem to be one of the select few who didn't like those games I think you could give it a try perhaps. About Super Smash Bros Melee: You can't go wrong with this one. I don't know a single person who actually played this game and didn't like it. It's one of the best games I've ever played and this is coming from a guy who isn't keen on fighting games. It'll keep you occupied for months unlocking everything and gathering all trophies (heck, even I still don't have all of them :p ) Can't go wrong with this one. About Resident Evil Remake: As a long-running fan of Resident Evil, to me this game is the pinnacle of the series. You say that you're a fan of horror, then you must check this game out. It's more tense and moody than RE4, but plays completely different so the controls might turn you off. I'd say definitely rent this one. About Eternal Darkness: This is a love-it-or-hate-it type of game. I like it, one of my mates who also bought it hated it. It certainly is a unique game with compelling story and a lot of innovative ideas. Although I found that it tends to drag towards the end, and playing in the same locations gets annoying. I'd give it an 8.5

I'm not sure what to recommend to a 4 year old. I wouldn't say give something that has barney on it, but rather I'd look at the game and see if it's simple to play. For this purpose, Kirby's Air Ride is the simplest game I've ever played. There's only one button to use and it controls brake, drifting, powers, etc.

Anyway, I'm like you in that I'm not a fan of repetitive RPGs, their grinding and their constant item fetching.

I would not recommend a fighter, because it's only great when you have a buddy who's competitive as you are. I'd stay away from SSBM and SC2 for now.

What I will recommend are stunning singleplayer experiences.

REmake isn't "worse" or "better" than RE4. It's just different. While in RE4, you're blasting heads off, similar to an action flick, REmake is where you take it slower, think about your actions more carefully and generally use your head more. There's a lot more puzzles in REmake, but I've passed most of them with ease. It's a lot more atmospheric and intense than RE4. Get it for the feeling.

Metroid Prime is also a game that features stunning graphics. This is not a Halo or CS. It's a game where you literally explore areas, find new paths and acquire new abilities. It's not about this FPS aiming, because aiming is automatic.

Since you are a father, I assume you have a patience many people here don't have. If you are up for it, I recommend Killer7 as a surreal experience you get out of a thriller novel. The game oozes style, the gameplay is flashy and the story is incredible deep on many levels.

I'd recommend either of the Lego Star Wars games considering the appeal of the fun co-op play. You can be playing and the only thing the second person needs to do is press the start button and they'll jump into the game with you. My sister and I both played through it and had a lot of fun. The combat it's not hard by any means but it is fun. The levels are nicely varied and detailed, and the puzzle elements of the game are fun as well since they aren't hard.
They're both fun games but I'd recommend getting the first Lego Star Wars game. It's only $19.99 and to me it was a pretty good value. If you are curious about the game you should check out the game information on Gamespot along with a few gameplay videos.

I'd have a look here in this forum. It's the Gamecube recommendation Thread #3.

http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=24222965

If you find a game that's interesting have a search for it in Gamespot or elsewhere and see what score they give it. You can have look at some of the trailers for the game or places like Gametrailers.

Resident Evil: REmake - If you liked Resident Evil 4 for it's action and fast-paced shoot'em up style, then you probably won't enjoy the slow, deliberate style of REmake.  However, if you were mainly intrigued by the story, characters, and overall atmosphere of the game, then I would highly recommend REmake.  Honestly, I would recommend it anyways, as it's easily one of my favorite games for the GC and it has some of the best graphics you will ever see on the console.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Another must-play for any GameCube owner imo, this game redefined survival horror with its clever and really unpredictable "sanity meter".  I don't want to spoil anything for you, but you will never be more pleseantly surprised by a video game.  Buy it.

Metroid Prime - Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed by this game, but I do own and I did enjoy playing it.  Overall, I think like you pointed out, it's just not really my style of game.  If you do try this and end up loving it, then of course you should get the sequel as well.

Other games I would recommend:

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Amazing game, especially with the charming cell-shaded graphics.  A bit on the kiddy side, but still worth the purchase imo.  Of course, when can you ever go wrong with a Zelda purchase...besides Zelda II of course.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Even though I haven't gotten around to purchasing this one yet, I can still confidently recommend it to you as a Zelda fan.  I don't know how it stacks up against some of the more prominent Zelda titles, such as OoT and ALttP, but I'm sure it's at least AS good as if not BETTER than both of those games.

Viewtiful Joe - A very fun action/adventure game with a clever premise and storyline.  Definitely worth a rental try at least.

You shouldn't worry about Paper Mario TTYD, because it's not the kind of role-playing game you think it would be. It's Mario style separates from other anime RPGS on the 'cube like Tales of Symphonia, which is a great game, but not for non-role playing people. You also shouldn't worry about Melee for the same reason, especially if its the complicated controls that keeps you away, because Melee's controls ftw. If you like snowboarding games, than the three SSX games are excellent, and 1080 Avalanche is even better if your rating your snowboarding games by their actual speed. I don't know about REmake, but I'm sure it's great IF you liked RE4. I rented that once, and my opinions of it were kind of like your thoughts on Halo. I also reccomend Viewtiful Joe and Metroid(Trust me, it makes the Halo games look flat-out lame) and Wind Waker if you can take it's action-adventure like status.(and the cartoonish design) I love Zelda games, the only problem is, I REALLY, REALLY suck at them, lol.
