I got SSBM the Christmas it came out (like 6 years ago) and picked up the controls very fast. The more you play it, the better you get and the better moves you can pull off. Now, I fight 3 lvl 9 computers just for fun.
p.s. The best part are the multi-player melee's
It doesn't take long to be able to easily handle 3 level 9s (i play 3 level 9s, 5 or 6 stock and rarely come close to dieing). I think the controls for the game work great, sure it takes a while to master some things but it is easy to pick up and play using no real combos and nothing more then double jumps, and then as you get better you'll be able to dodge, air dodge, combo, smash, c stick, etc, etc.I got SSBM the Christmas it came out (like 6 years ago) and picked up the controls very fast. "Oh yes look at me! I just have to blurt out how many lvl 9 cpu's i can beat! I'm so damn COOL!
What that? You can do it with more stock left!?! LIES! YOUR SUCH A NOOB!"
That pretty much sums up EVERY ssbm conversation on this board.

Perfectly said.
Agreed.
Disagreed. Multiplayer or Single, I can't stand SSBM. I payed $40 for a copy based on its reputation, and I feel I got ripped off by at least $50. Its the type of game they should just give out free in kid's cereal boxes......just my personal opinion.
You had trouble with the controls? Get used to them because you're going to suck at this game if you don't. I had trouble with the controls too, but after getting used to them it was really fun.
The two people I tried to teach Smash Bros to seemed to catch on pretty quick.
There is nothing "good" about SSBM. SSBM has some features and that people tend to like some of these features.
I find SSBM easier to get into than other fighting games. The B button and A button, shield and grab are easy for me to grasp.
There is however a lot of physical technique to the game, well in higher level player. Players may chase you down as you fall, in order to make sure you die.
SSBM has 4 player support, dozens of modes to try, a tournament mode, a host of 20+ characters (although many are clones), dozens of levels, challenges and trophy mode. To me, the simple gameplay is the most significant.
I'm not into physical fighters, but more into ones where you have to determine which move is the best for each situation, which I find Soul Calibur does well.
