I disagree. I liked the art style and LOVED the combat, but thought the story was pretty boring, dragged out, and inconsistent. (Even the GS gameplay guide makes fun of the many inconsistencies throughout). Though I will admit the character development was pretty good. I thought the voice acting was pretty bad for a few characters, especially Colette. And since the story is supposed to be the main driving force behind an RPG, I thought this game was pretty mediocre because of it's weak story (IMHO), despite the incredibly fun combat. Plus I LOVED the fact you can play multi-player during the combat. :-D And I liked the GRADE purchases after beating the game, giving incentive to play through again. Oh, and I thought the soundtrack was kinda lame too. Too "kiddy" and repetitive for me, if you're trying to make a serious RPG.
Sorry i dissagre .even toughi just got through half the game(the second worldthrough a long bridge ).
The combat sistem was good but the story and the characters -along with the dialogues-were kind of boring ( the characters onlydid look good in thestatus screen and the intro movie ). I did'nt like the puzzles and the dungeons either they did look flat to me .
But who knows maybei'll give it another chance someday
oh yeah, I forgot to mention the worst part of the game that ruined it's fun value alot for me, and that was... the RIDICULOUSLY complex puzzles in the dungeons! I'm a smart guy too (a teacher in fact, lol), so it's not my fault. I had to look up the game guide here at GS to figure out some of the late-game dungeon puzzles, and even the GS game guide constantly complained about how stupididly complex they were. :-P skreetpreacha
TOS was an awesome game and definately one of the better games on the GC however it wasn't the best. Personally I didn't even think it was the best RPG on the system. I found Baten Kaitos Origins to be much better.

Ironically, I thought that Gorge one with the flowers was one of the easiest ones in the game. :-P (The boss fight there was a pushover too). There werea good 4-5 of em near the end of the game that were ridiculous. The GS review mentions it like it was common knowledge that the dungeon puzzles were simply ridiculously complex. So it looks like I'm not the only one to think so.
Definately one of the best, great characters, great story, great battle system, and it's one long game!
Even though not my very favorite.....one of the best....
TOS is definitely one of the top games on the NGC, but it shies in comparison to other games in my collection. (ex: RE4)

The dungeons puzzles didn't seem that hard for me... of course, the way I approached places where I got stuck was basically to try solving them, but end up wandering around aimlessly for 1+ hours; after that, I'd be able to solve them fairly easy (since I would be familiar with the layout).

lol, for sure, but wandering around aimlessly for an hour, backtracking, and doingtrial and error just isnt fun to me, it's annoying, GRRR!! ... I prefer the good balance of exploration in something like Twilight Princess.
And ToS has hard puzzles? I think every Zelda game is harder than ToS puzzle wise, and Zelda games are ALL about backtracking, just like Metroid. ToS has next to no backtracking, and doesn't require any trial and error. That's just you doing stuff wrong.SoulSlayer_

A lot of other Zelda games are harder than ToS, but TP certainly wasn't (at least for me)... and TP didn't have much backtracking (that I can remember).
well here i thought my friend was the only who thought this game was difficult though i cant see how its difficult only one puzzle did i actually look up and that was the four ice statues that you gotta turn in some direction and it says look somewhere for a view but i never found this somewhere
which is what i liked about TOS is was good length RPG simple and no mindlessly difficult puzzles like a door wont activate because you forgot to kill a rat in the basement or you didnt activate a certain cutscene its pretty much you will run across this cut scene without having to track it down(a flaw ive found in rpgs you must go find a cutscene and activate it to move on and it feels out of place)and no boring turn based stuff which i normally dont like and the story was humourous even if cliched(what rpg isnt cliched) but this one was funny and humourous and simple and while a save teh world theme was there it wasnt all dark and gloomy or trying to fake dark and gloomy it was upbeat and played to that tune wonderfully
i like dark and gloomy but still this game is quite fun and easy plus it was great i didnt get stuck anywhere really
i admit i probably wouldnt of bought it but i was bored and still had a month before day of reckoning 1 was to be releaseda nd gave this game a try and do not regret it and now a sequel is planned for the wii in japan so only a matter of time before america gets it.

again, I have to disagree. The first time I reachedthe Thoda Docks trying to geta ride to theWater Temple, I had to look up how to "activate" thecutscene. Which was first finding the hidden chef guy, then talking to a girl inside the village, then you couldunlock a cutscene at thedocks. Sounds pretty random and pointless to me.... As for backtracking, there was still LOTS in ToS, especially near the end of the game where you'd have to keep going back and forth between Tethealla and Sylverant. The backtracking involving the Spiritua Stone between Palmacosta, Hedonesia Peak, and the Water Temple was pretty pointless, as well as traveling tofind the ingredients to cure Colette's angel sickness near the end.
And ironically again, I found the Icedungeon puzzle to be one of the easiest ones for me, since it was only 5-6 turns to complete it. Now the anti-gravity puzzle leaving the tower of Welgia had 2 rooms like that, that had 15 or more specific turns to complete them, which is plumb ridiculous.
As far as ToS being a "difficult" game, I never would say that. I found the combat to be very easy, I don't think I ever died playing it. But again, there were a good 4-5 puzzles, most of them near the end, that had no business being put in video game, lol, due to their random complexity. :-P ... As for Zelda, I've owned and beat every version of em (except some of the GBA ones) and the only puzzle I ever thought was pretty hard was the infamous Water Temple in OoT. The one thing I'll mention about Zelda games though, is that Wind Waker is notorious for the tediously annoying triforce shard-finding marathon near the end of the game. (on a side note: I thought that game was almost perfect besides that).... peace
Welgaia was just annoying because the funky art style meant I couldn't figure out where the doors and stuff in the antigravity rooms were.Funkyhamster
Lol, I agree. Welgia's antigravity room was a pain for a while until you got use to it...
ive had this game ever since it came out and i always thought that this was the best game for it by far. I only beat it once but im back to playing it again with one of my friends and we are getting towards the end. Reply if u think this is the best game ever on the gamecube.

not even close to the best game on the GC. And its only the 4th best GC RPG behind Skies of Arcadia Legends, Paper Mario: TYD, Baten Kaitos, and perhaps even BK2, which I haven't played. If Fire Emblem counts, thats above it as well.
ToS is a good solid RPG but its neither great or special IMO.
No, is not the best.
There are others with best development like RE4, Zelda WW and TP, Metroid I and II, even Smash Melee, but one thing is for sure Tales is MY personal favorite GC game i love everything about it even some of their weaker points i dint even noticed, so my friend, is not the bes, but is the favorite of many people like you and me. Collete Rules.
