Ive been thinking about this over the last few days and have been trying to work out whether or not it was smart of nintendo to let go of Rare as a exclusive Developer.  I really am torn over this.  Yes they made really cool games, but considering after it was sold Rare havent really made any huge hits in my opinion (am I wrong?) is/was it a huge loss for Nintendo in the long term or was it a smart decision?

What do you all think?

It was a smart decision. Rare simply can't keep up with the video game market today. They hit it big with the N64 games, but they simply can't come up with any good concepts for todays market.

But, they continue on Franchises made on Nintendo 64. Such as Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie.
I really find the idea messed up that the 3rd Banjo Kazooie game will be on Xbox.

I don't think it would've improved much had they decided to stay with Nintendo. By the time GameCube came around, Rare was already losing a lot of steam and most of the people who'd worked on the N64 games had moved on. Rare today is a completely different studio than it used to be. However, I still think they can be a successful developer but they need to create some original titles rather than trying to reinvent their N64 franchises of yesteryear.

People liked Banjo back in the day, but it is only be a quick nostalgia trip today.

As I said ive been thinking about it a bit and I think its a bit of a shame Nintendo let go, but really I think the only really great franchises Rare still holds are Conker and Perfect Dark.  I am just curious how things would have gone if there had been another conkers on the cube or a Perfect Dark.  Would the cube still have been as unpopular as many non-fans assume?

I find Rare to be interesting since they where so huge with the N64 and SNES, they seem to have disapeared off the radar as a top developer.  I was reading about them and I noticed a lot of the people who where at Rare in the nintendo days left before microsoft took over, do you think that might be the reason why they arent as huge now or do you think its something to do with micrsoft directly?

What do you guys think would have happened for the cube if Rare had of stayed a Nintendo exclusive?  Would it have been a more sucessfull console?

I think it was, Rare made the best games of the N64, and they could do the same on the GameCube but Nintendo decided to let them go and they are with Microsoft,I think Nintendo and Rare worked perfectly as a team.

Rare isn't the same team that's around today as they were back in the past. The two founding members from way back in the Spectrum 48/C64  'Ultimate' days have both left the company a few months ago. Also other key people have left to form - Free Radical Design (Timesplitters) and Zoonami.

In 2002, the two founding members of Rare sold their their shares in the company (51%) to Microsoft and after that Nintendo decided to sell it's shares (49%) as well.

During the Gamecubes time it was bad to see Factor 5 (now with Sony), Rare (now with Microsoft), Silicon Knights (now with Microsoft) to go their separate ways from Nintendo. I'm sure Nintendo knows what they are doing but at the time it did hit fans hard.

At the time it happened I though it was a bad idea, but looking back now, it was probably the right thing to do.

ey would have been forced to make new and amazing games, or I think if Rare was stuck with Nintendo, it would be forced to come out with games that live up to the Rare name.

Rare is a real crappy developer these days. Viva Pinata is their first good game since Starfox Adventures.
Nintendo made a good move.
