The intentionally flopped it. They ended up sending out the broadband and Dialup modems that they had and then they quit making any new ones and stopped supporting online more or less all together.
As said already Nintendo originally wanted to make the cube online but back in 2001 getting a console up and running online wasn't such an easy thing. Also back in 2001, the cost of broadband was quite high. Nintendo got cold feet and backtracked on that idea.
Nintendo never really supported the cube's online features and it was left pretty much to Nintendos old rivals Sega to help out.
In total there were 4 online Gamecube games that came out for the system but also it's worth mentioning 'Warp Pipe' which allowed more cube games to be played online.
On the bottom of the gamecube there are internet acces points, but the cube isn't online right? Why are they there??!$@#!& THEY TAUNT ME!!!!!:P lolskulleton1
>_> those Arent Modem Ports or Internet Access points, those are Expansion Sockets. One was for the BBA&Modem, 1 was for the GameBoy Player and the 3rd was for the unreleased Hard Disk Drive.
