I don't really have a best. I use different characters to give me an edge in any situation. I mostly use Luigi, Ness, Ganondorf, and Samus.
Lugi: I use him for arial melee attacks. His high jumping allows for easy air attacks and easy escape.
Ness: He's got decent jumping which is good for some powerful air attacks. He's also a fair ground melee fighter, and his projectile assortment is always useful. "PK FLASH!" BOOM!
Ganondorf: Sometimes I'll go against melee fighters with him. He's slow and a bad jumper, but he's very powerful and can take a lot of damage. He can rack up a lot of damage with a few down+B and left/right+B attacks followed by an up+B while they're in the air. Warlock Punch when timed right is murder, and his downward air attack = ouch.
Samus: I'm not very good with her, but with a partner keeping them busy with melee attacks, I'm good at blasting opponents from the fray with the beam cannon. Plus she's got decent speed and jumping which is good for escape.
