I remember when Nintendo first announced it, and I was thinking "Why is it purple? Why not black or silver, or white?" Maybe the GC would have had less kid-friendly titles if it wasn't purple, that way people would have taken it more seriously. Maybe the GC would have sold slightly better:|

Because Nintendo take the colors from the Mac computers. Look the color of the ipod and of some mac computers; Nintendo 64 had the same colors of the mac of that time.
at the time nintendo had completly lost the plot. maybe purple is cool colour in japan but ninty complety failed to realise that it wouldnt sit well with most people in the west. thankfully they had a black one too (along with many other colours as time went by) but they marketed the machine in purple. woops.
It was a smart choice by nintendo imo, also how dare you call someone gay for no particular reason. I think nintendo made it purple cause they wanted to go with a color other than black(who say every console have to be black).Â
It was because fruity(and by that I mean actual fruit) colors are very popular in Japan
Anyone who's looked at Nintendo marketing practices the last 20 years can tell that Japan is their primary focus, and they hope the rest of the world will come along for the ride
Originally it was a take at Sony. In japanese culture Purple is the royal color or the color of the emperor. It represents power and knowledge. Like saying "our system is higher class than yours", but it didn't mean a darn thing here in the west and people just thought it was queer Glad mine is black though. Japan even got Red and Orange Spice colored systems and we get purple, silver and black, oh well.

I got mine around launch and my dad got it so I had no choice and got the purple, but personly I think it's better because black and silver are kinda getting old....
so it matches your entertainment package, oh wait, it doesn't, maybe that the look they were going for. Most electronics are white/grey/black, why not spice up yoru living room with some purple?
Well this is how I look at it. They made the gamecube so that you could hook up your gameboy advance to it for certain games right? Well the gameboy advance was also launched in purple. So why not have matching colors on your two systems when you go to hook them up. I think that is what they had in mind.
