10% of Ubisoft's workforce working on games for NEXT-GEN consoles: Xbox 3, Wii 2 and PS4. These consoles have been in development for several years now (since 2005-2006) and are expected to be released between 2011 and 2013.

Ubisoft Working On Games For "Next Generation Of Systems"

Well, it's always good to be proactive but perhaps this can be placed into the category of "jumping the gun."

According to Ubisoft's recent financial report, summarized by Bloomberg, company founder Yves Guillemot said that "10% of Ubisoft's workforce is working on developing games for the next generation of game systems that will eventually replace [the] Wii, Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3." He went on to say that his company goes after new technologies "faster than everyone else," and reminds us that Ubisoft was one of the first to produce games exclusively for the Wii. Now, he wants the large company to be prepared for the PS4 and Xbox 720 (if that's indeed what those consoles will be called), and clearly, he expects Ubisoft to deliver a few launch titles for each piece of new hardware. At this point, it's difficult to say when any of the new consoles will arrive, but some analysts have said that new systems from either Nintendo or Microsoft may arrive as early as 2011, but it seems that most bank on the PS3 being around for a while. For our part, we seriously doubt we'll see a fourth PlayStation before 2013, but at least Ubisoft will be ready for it when it happens.

I still can't see the next gen consoles coming out in the next 2 years. Maybe announced, but not in stores. As that quote says - they seriously doubt they will see a PS4 before 2013, and it doesn't really help game developers if consoles are staggered so much that the technology and capabilities of the systems are very different. We would see a lot more games being designed for one system or the other, which would cost more to create, and give us less choice.

Jumping the gun a bit there Ubisoft, seeing as most launch titles arent worth getting the console for generally. They need to work on making better current generation games rather than use 10% of their staff on technology they might not have yet.

i wonder, how are they able to create tools to make games for the successors of the current generation consoles when it's non-existent. unless they have a prototype of the next-gen machines or building the engine on a high-end pc, then porting it to the next-gen consoles later on, i think it's a bit too early to do so.

A bit surprising, since it seems like the current generation just got underway. But looking at the dates proposed, it sort of makes sense. That would give the 360 a 6 year lifespan and the Wii a 5 year one. While I'm not surprised there are some workers/developers in contact with manufacturers about their next platform, it's a bit surprising to see 10% at this stage. Perhaps Ubisoft knows something we don't.

Not surprising at all, the current generation began 3.5 years ago with the release of Xbox 360 in fall 2005.

It takes years to develop new consoles--The next-gen consoles that are widely expected in 2011-2012 (by most of the industry) would've been under development by no later than 2005-2006.

From conception to production for either Xbox was 18 months. The 360 would of benefited from a longer R&D period, OBVIOUSLY!!! Could of saved them some money...RROD shouldn't exist.

Personally, I think that 10% should go to work on more pressing matters. Such as customer support...

(In case you didn't know, Ubisoft's customer support is horrible)

I agree that companies should focus on the current gen, but most games take a year or three to develop, so even assuming the next gen is 2-3 years out, assigning some guys the responsibility of designing next gen games isn't unreasonable provided one is a megapublisher like Ubisoft.

Cool! I'm always ready for new and interesting stuff. I just can't believe they're gonna call it the PS4. I certainly hope Sony is more creative than that when it comes to naming their consoles.
