I was reading a post on Gamespy fo this guy comparing games of 1998 to this year, and while I think this has been a fantastic year for gaming, look at the major releases of 1998:

I still think that this has been the best year ever for gaming myself.Archangel3371
I'd say not even close. Last year was better.

Yeah last year was awesome. For me last year is one I consider as my second best year.[QUOTE="doubutsuteki"]1993 beats 1998.Cherokee_JackFor what, Doom? I'd say Half-Life and OOT beat Doom easily.
Obviously you weren't much of a gamer back then.
I still give it to 2001 personally.Saruman17192001 was indeed a good year; GTA3, Devil May Cry, FF10, Halo, MGS2, among others

I would have to agree: Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound (Mother 2 was released in Japan this year so I consider it '94), Super Metroid, Tekken, TIE Fighter, Warcraft, Sonic and Knuckles (gotta love the cartridge hook-up), Donkey Kong Country, and the original PlayStation was released. Don't get me wrong, 1998 was great too, but I'd have to say '94 takes it.

By a mile. Master of Orion + Master of Magic = Heaven
Yes!
And: Day of the Tentacle, Elite II: Frontier, Alien Legacy, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Betrayal at Krondor, Nomad, Veil of Darkness, Doom, Gateway II, CivNet, X-COM: UFO Defense, Syndicate, Burntime, Cannon Fodder, Alien Breed, Wing Commander: Privateer, Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, The Settlers, Pinball Fantasies, Simon the Sorcerer, Dare to Dream, X-Wing, Bloodnet and Railroad Tycoon Deluxe...
Just to mention some more, and not even going into consoles. The SNES and the Mega Drive / Genesis, Nintendo's best ever console vs Sega's best ever console were at the peak of their popularity. Shouldn't that be enough reason?
I'm not saying that 1998 was bad, but it just doesn't compare. The early 90s were something else.

Wow! A good majority of my top 10 games were released in '93. (DotT, Betrayal, X-Com, Doom, X-Wing, Gabriel Knight)Had a feeling 1998 would be considered a major one. From what I knew that was when Zelda OoT came out and when the Dreamcast was first released. I also heard before that there were other major releases (remember coming across some awards for different years thing and Zelda OoT didn't win GotY for 1998, despite being considered one of the greatest games of all time) though most of the games on the list you linked to are games I've only vaguely heard of.I was reading a post on Gamespy fo this guy comparing games of 1998 to this year, and while I think this has been a fantastic year for gaming, look at the major releases of 1998:

It was great but I didn't have a current gen console at the time and as a kid we didn't have a gaming PC. 2004 was probably more relevant for me. But it seems that every year has so much greatness.
Impossible for me to decide the greatest year of gaming. But it was definately in the nineties!
There was so many awesome games released at different times during the nineties... A decade that just kept getting better...
Now, all that seems to change is the graphics :(
