With great 2D classics like:

Fighting Street

Street Fighter 2

Super Street Fighter 2

Street Fighter 3

Street Fighter 3 3rd strike

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street fighter

Samurai showdown

Fatal Fury

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2

Mortal Kombat 3

Primal Rage

King of Fighters

Darkstalkers

Clayfiughter

Guilty Gear

Then with Great 3D Fighters like:

Tekken

Tekken 3

Mortal Kombat 4

Mortal Kombat deadly allaince

Soul Caliber

Soulcaliber 2

Battle Arena Toshinden

Street fighter EX

DStreet Fighter Ex2(plus)

Virtua Fighter

Virtua FIghter 3

Fighting Vipers

Fighter MEgamaix

Def jam

Bloody Roar

Which do you prefer more? I have been looking at this for a very long long long time......

I would say that it would depend on the combat system really. If something was using say, use King of Fighters engine I would not use that in a 3D fighting game for example.

2D ones win quite easily, imo.

The fighting mechanics in 3D fighters feel a bit out of place and clunky to me.

It's like they took a 2D fighter and put it into 3D graphics but not also significantly changed the fighting system. (which would, imo, require analog buttons and full, free, analog stick movement in 3D space)

I have to applaud Toshinden, Bushido Blade and even Ballz for being brave enough to give more focus on free movement in 3D space.

I have to say 2D fighters. There's just too many of those that I enjoy a lot.

I like both as far as legacy goes. For modern, 3D as Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter are the only ones I've followed lately.

While I enjoy 2D fighters more, I also hate them for ocassionally giving me thumb blisters... so I'll have to go with 3D fighters on this one.

Yes, but it was the first 3D fighter to put more emphasis on side-stepping.

There was also Dark Edge from Sega which predated Virtua Fighter and used a pseudo 3D engine (the "Super Scaler" tech from OutRun and Afterburner) and had an interesting concept but it didn't really work very well. (hard to see and hit the opponent at times, strange jumping)

I've always liked 2D fighters more.

There are some great 3D fighters out there, but the best 3D fighters don't hold a candle to the best 2D fighters.

2d. Gameplay is stronger, characters are more original and offbeat (Blazblue, Guilty Gear, Skullgirls), and I've grown up playing them. I do love some 3d fighters though.

Gotta go with 2D because of:

MvC2

SF3 Third Strike

SF Alpha 3

GG X2 Reload

GG AC+

and of course my childhood favorites MK and MKII

Although I got into 3D with VF on the 32X and Tekken 3, and I absolutely loved Tekken Tag and DoA2.

The only 3D game I really got into was Soul Caliber and Dead or Alive series.

2D all the way.

Toshinden pretty much laid the foundations for the likes of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. Toshinden 2 in particular was one of my favourite fighting games of that era. As for Dark Edge, I just posted some screenshots of that game in my 'Evolution of Video Game Graphics' thread. That game had some of the most impressive pseudo-3D graphics I've seen for an early 90's game.

I like both but I feel more in control when I play 2d. I get lost playing 3d some times.

I was a big Street Fighter 2 fan until I got a PS1 back in 1996. I got my hands on a copy of Tekken and the rest is history. So 3D for me.
