3DS XL compared to the regular 3DS

Link.

Nintendo of America confirmed that the XL-sized Nintendo 3DS will be coming to North America this summer.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, confirmed the August 19th launch date during a Nintendo Direct presentation. The new system hits the same day as 3DS game New Super Mario Bros. 2.

The Nintendo 3DS XL will be priced at $199.99 and will include a 4GB memory card.

Polygon

Also of note: this 3DS will apparently have a battery life of 6-10 hours, according to NeoGAF's thread on the presentation. No idea who their souce is (can't watch the conference currently), but if that is indeed true, than that alone has sold me on this.

Yay! Another $200 handheld that won't sell.

Also, didn't Nintendo go on record recently saying they weren't doing redesigns for the 3DS, but planning an entire new handheld?

EDIT: Answer: Yep.

Have to wonder why the hell they said that when they went ahead and announced a revised 3DS not long after. Are they all not on the same page or something?

Same ailment since 2006:

Nintendo has its head up its ass.

Damn thing also doesn't come with an AC adaptor... really?

Besides Miyamoto flat out lying about iterating on the 3DS, this also shows how much E3 has diminished.

It was just a few years ago that something this big would have been announced at E3. Now, Nintendo trolled the ESA and skipped their insignificant show to announce this on their own.

Don't want to damage sales of the current unit until everything's out there, I guess. They've done it with every other revision of their handhelds and even held firm about the price drop last fall after a bunch of Canadian retailers started dropping hints in the form of $50 cuts.

That's a crazy cost cutting measure, but not the thing's biggest problem, really - it's the screen. Where Apple has been pushing its way into marketing Retina displays, this 3DS LL will have the equivalent of a glaucoma/macular degeneration display. It's so big its pixels will be easier to count than the DSi XL. That and they've enlarged the handheld a lot but still didn't add a second analog stick and the face buttons are still the size of pinheads. edit - yeah, here's the pixels per inch (PPI) of the 3DS LL, though I was wrong about how poor the DSi XL looks: 78 - DSi XL 107 -- 3DSXL 128 -- Original PSP 132 -- 3DS 163 -- Original iPhone 221 -- Vita 219 -- Samsung Galaxy SII 326 -- Retina iPhone

Geez, LOL. That's AWFUL.

Oh well, I wasn't buying one anyway. Handhelds suck for the most part. Whenever I want to goof around with a handheld game, I use my iPad or iPhone.

Yeah I only keep them around for the odd game I can't get anywhere else. I'd much rather be playing games on a console on a big TV with surround sound and a proper controller.

Vita will change your mind. It's sexy, it's sleek, and the screen and features make it seem next gen. It's seriously made the wait for next gen a lot easier for me.

I don't know... Vita's cool, but it doesn't seem like a game-changer. So far it looks like they made a portable PS3, what with the parity between two platforms' games and all.

I dont know. I like the pick up and play nature of Vita. I like how you can just turn it off mid game and then pick it up later from the exact same point. No need to boot up the console, wait 5 minutes, light the candles etc. Also, I cant always have the living room tv for myself, and thats when ma Vita comes in handy.

I like gaming on the big screen too, but am way too lazy I guess.

The fact that it's a portable PS3 is what makes it awesome. Back when the PSP came out, they touted the same thing but we never really got PS2 quality games. Or PS2 games. With the Vita, I am getting BETTER versions of PS3 games. Fifa Vita plays better with the rear touch controls and looks nearly identical. MGS3 uses touchscreen controls that takes most of the tough pressure sensitive CQC moves a lot easier to perform. The D-Pad made MVC3 a blast to play even when I was getting air-raped online. Not to mention it looks as good as the PS3 version AND runs at 60 fps. Uncharted GA has the best puzzles in the series so far mainly due to the inventive use of the touchscreen and camera capabilites. MLB the Show plays exactly the same on the Vita. Party Chat and the mic makes it so much more easier to communicate. No need to find your bluetooth headset. You can pause the game and run five different apps in the background. it's amazing.

Why does it need a killer app? Why cant a really good selection of really solid games 4 months from release be good enough? What did the 3DS have 4 months in? Street Fighter port and a Ocrina of Time port? The Vita launched with dozens of really solid and addictive games with some very clever online features. The ghost sharing in Rayman and the daily challenges in Unit 13 and Hot Shots golf is pretty damn cool. I mean if I recall correctly, PS3 didnt have a killer app until Uncharted launched in 2007. 360 didnt have Gears until 2006. A full year after it launched. I'd say Uncharted GA, Rayman Origins, MVC3, Unit 13, Gravity Daze, Fifa Vita, Virtua Tennis, Hot Shots Golf, Escape Plan, Motorstorm, MLB The SHow are all really solid games. Games i'd rank in the 7-8 range with some even hitting 9s. And in a week, LBP is coming out and that game looks tailor made for the Vita.

Ugh. The casing design of the 3DS XL is fugly but I love the larger screens and longer battery life. Also disappointing to see no second analog slider added. I might get one or I might just stick with my current 3DS, not too sure right now.

While I like the bigger screens I can't say I'm going to buy this. Will this replace the current 3DS SKU? Or will it exist beside it? It's pretty bold of them to actually RAISE the price of 3DS with hardware sales so bad in the US. Also, it's much, much uglier than the current 3DS. I guess this means we'll never get the cobalt blue, polar white 3DS units in NA. I've already got to save up for the Wii U later this year and games so I'm not getting this. I'm not sure it will even be on my holiday wish list. Improving the battery life and making my CPP incompatible isn't attractive to me ATM. For new buyers I see this as a win-win, but for 3DS owners (I'm a launch day buyer) I don't think its much of a good deal

Why are you comparing the 3DS and Vita? He clearly doesn't seem interested in ANY handhelds so the comparison seems irrelevant. He just doesn't appear to like any games for the Vita ATM, maybe he feels the same way about the 3DS. No sense in trying to convince him of anything.

And I won't deny that's awesome. But in general, if I wanted to play PS3 games, I'd rather play them on the PS3. And most of the stuff I've really wanted to play on Vita have ended up on PS3, or are ports of PS3 games. If I'm buying a portable system, I want it because there's some good exclusive content there, not because I want to play home console games on the go. That's cool and all, but that shouldn't be the main conceit of the system.

Blah. Still no second analog. I was hoping for at least that. The reason I never bought a 3DS was I knew a redesign would hit sooner or later. Disappointing.

Nintendo blew their chance at my business. I tolerated the PSPs single analog setup, despite it being frustrating at times. I'm not going through that again.

I compared it to the consoles as well. And seeing as how we are in a 3DS thread, a comparison to the 3DS seemed appropirate.

regardless, dont mind me. I dont know what i was going on about last night. :P

I'd just stick with your current model. Seems like this one isn't really made to phase out of the smaller ones, more like an extra option for those who haven't brought it yet and want a bigger screen to look at

[QUOTE="AtariKidX"]And the 3DS is basically a portable Wii.c_rake

How so?

System Wars is creeping into PGD lol. I would not bother asking how :P.

I like the new form factor of the 3DS XL, but the actual thing is way too big for my liking.

It does come with an AC Adapter, but not for EU or JP regions. I still don't get the complaints about it not having a second analog. It's really not required on a handheld.

I agree lol. I've only started to post in the SW Lounge - PGD is more sane :).

Seriously, would it have been too much effort? Black_Knight_00
And by doing that you would have fractured the user base splitting it into two. Now I'm no economist but that seems like a bad business decision. If they were to put two circle pads on it, it would make more sense to just call it a new handheld that has nothing to do with the 3DS.

Since when is offering more a bad decision? The truth is what they are doing here is replicating what they did with the DS: one redesign with minor improvements more or less every year . This one has a larger screen, the next will have dual analog sticks. And people complain about Call of Duty

Handhelds suck for the most part. Whenever I want to goof around with a handheld game, I use my iPad or iPhone.

Vita will change your mind. It's sexy, it's sleek, and the screen and features make it seem next gen. It's seriously made the wait for next gen a lot easier for me.

Vita's alright when I'm on the go, but I still wish it had video out, like the PSP 2000-3000, for when I'm actually home and would much rather play it on my TV. My PSP 2000 is dangerously close to becoming my main console.

That would only be true if they hadn't already implemented the second circle pad. http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3ds-circle-pad-pro-gamestop-exclusive/98636 Games are already using it, so frankly any new 3DS model should have it.
