Playing Resident Evil 5 made me want to go back and bust out my dusty ol' Cube and pop in RE4 again. Sure I'm playing on a standard TV with no HD graphics to spoil me while playing with a clunky WaveBird...but after playing through the first two chapters...wow...this game is still amazing! I saw myself getting addicted again.

Resident Evil 4 Picture

I can't believe it's been 4 years since I played RE4. Even though I still remember the main parts of the game, I forgot almost everything which makes me feel like I'm playing it all over again. Resident Evil 5's graphicss really spoiled me so when I first started RE4 it was really tough for my eyes to adjust to the graphics. I just can't believe the game aged like that. I still remember the first time I saw this game and being blown away by it, saying to myself, "This is the best graphics I've ever seen!"

At the end...Gameplay > Graphics, always.

RE4 is just as amazing since the first day I played it. After an hour of play, my eyes got used to the old Gamecube's graphics again and I was having a blast. The game is still scaring me and keeping me on edge. I mean, I passed this game three times back in the day but it's still giving me the jitters!

It really is a testament to how incredible and amazing this game was...or should I say...is. RE4 is truly a masterpiece and one of the greatest games ever made, period!

Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of RE4 yet. I don't have the right systems. But I understand the graphical downgrade thing. I started replaying an N64 game the other day after playing Xbox for the past several years, and the graphics I had thought were good weren't as good as I had thought.

It's a perspective thing. Whenever the next big thing rolls around, everything that came before it loses some of it's luster graphically. RE4 was a revelation for me when it first hit the PS2 back in November 05.

I'd never liked the Resident Evil series, bar Code Veronica, and I'd been hearing great things about this new and exciting direction the series was going in (not so much what people are saying now, but screw them. If people want old-school RE so badly they should go back and play them, not try and ruin the newer games).

It's safe to say I loved every minute of it, just like I'm loving every minute of RE5 right now. It was the dawn of a new era for the survival horror genre, for better or for worse.

Resident Evil 4 is definitly one of the best games ever made. And I would say it is THE best game of it's generation. The graphics looked wonderful for it's time as well.

My thoughts exactly!!! Wasn't interested in the RE series but then I layed my hands on this one and finished it a countless number of times.

hehehe It was 4 years before I even played it a first time!(didnt like the series so didnt read anything about the new one lol). So for me I got to play them pretty close together. I'd say it probably helped out by having forgot mostly about RE4 while playing RE5. I made alot of accurate guesses as to who was who and what was going to happen next in RE5 because RE4 was so fresh on my mind. Even on how to beat some of the bosses.

Even after I finally rented RE4 years after it was released I almost missed out on its awesomeness. The first time you enter that village and start fighting....I died 4-5+ times and got fairly pissed off. I was pretty much there at the point where im like screw this game im taking it back. But I took a break and when I came back I just kept trying other strategies and discovered that your suppose to shoot everyone in the leg instead of the head. After that it was all cake.

I just hope they make atleast 1 more RE game that plays just like 4-5. Its so awesome to have a trilogy of a game. Then they can start screwing around and experimenting again.

RE4 is better than RE5. It went from survival horror to action horror with RE4 but at least RE4 pulled off a few scares, had a gloomy creepy environment (**** BRIGHT SUNNY AFRICA), and kept with the feeling of isolation and helplessness. Okay the helplessness was toned down since you became a bipedal Abhrams tank but still.

RE5 is more akin to an interactive, steroid abusing, counter-terrorism Indiana Jones flick. I'm not saying its a bad action game but it lacks the trademark environments and pacing that the series had established in the name of "survival horror".

RE5 is the first game to pull me away from Team Fortress 2 for the last almost 2 years. My favorite games of all time have been RE4, shadow of the colossus and TF2. RE5 scares me plenty. Though I love theexperienceof playing the game, I don't like the buffed up mainstreaming of the content. I feel its gradually becoming homogenous and trendy. What's up with Chris's rigor mortised constantly flexed arms WTH! I hope they take a step "back" in that regard or try to find a more creative angle for RE6 while maintaing the amazing sense of doom. RE5 definately still scares me. Istilllove strategizing how to get through the hordes. I also love taking the time to look around and just appreciate the efforts made to create real visually beautiful spaces. I just got RE4 again (ps2 this time, first time on gamecube) to play again after this.

Can anyone comment on the series before RE4? I started with RE4 and have the impression it would be a letdown to go back to earlier versions. I'm really curious about RE2... ?

The graphics still hold up to this day. I play the Wii version from time to time and its a blast from the past. Plus, 16:9 all the way.

@Greg in my opinion the earlier version have a more limited view(basically 3/4th's which is basically top down at an angle), the movement is alot worse(tank controls) but the scary moments and story are better. Rewards are alot harder to earn if they have them at all. I never bothered with the rewards so I cant really comment on what they were or how you got them but it sure as hell wasnt from selling loot and buying upgrades from a vendor lol.

I guess you like it since its more scary? You basically have no understanding about RE's origins or what the game used to be about ie, VIRUS'S and reanimated dead people (aka zombies!!). So the scares and the story would be great for your to experience but not so much the actual gameplay lol. In my opinion.

I agree that RE4 is a better game overall than RE5, but I really don't agree with your rationale here.

First off, RE5's environments are bright and sunny pretty much for the first two chapters, and then from that point, it goes from either being cloudy/dreary, to ruins and other environments that are more in line with what we saw in RE4.

Regarding isolation, well, there was some of that in RE4, but even then, the isolation was off set by things like the merchant, and being able to carry all of the weapons you needed at all times with you, including extra health and grenades for good measure.

Also, really, neither RE4 or 5 stands well as a 'survival horror' game, when you look at all the major elements that made the original trilogy + CV and 0 fit within the confines of the genre/buzz term Capcom used to describe them. So much of that was taken out of 4 and 5 that I sometimes don't even think of them as Resident Evil games on the premise of how they're designed, especially due to stuff like the pacing. RE 1-3 were paced more like adventure games, with environments that were relatively non-linear/maze like, and forcing the player to figure out the various environmental and literal puzzles that were in the game to get through, which ends up being much more slower and inconsistent than what we saw in RE 4-5, which are paced more like straight up action games.

Still, I get what you're saying, and I do agree that RE4 is better overall than RE5.

It does look antiquated when compared to RE5, that while its not bad looking by todays standards, it is riddled with muddy textures, dithering, color banding, poor IQ, not to mention it looks terrible when viewed upon on an HDTV. Its still a great game though. I actually gave it a 10.

I entirely agree. I had been a big fan of the entire Resident Evil series, and then I saw Resident Evil 4...it was such an action-packed departure from the other games. It was amazing, and very refreshing.

That is quite a claim. Out of thousands of games, RE4 is the one known as the best? I disagree, but I cannot propose an alternate game. Out of the games I've played, Morrowind is probably the best, but even I wouldn't assert to it's superiority over all of the other titles.

I guess the formula is great which is why you see games in the making with the same formula as Resident Evil 4. But it's not timeless.
