No atmosphere; it's broad daylight and you can see everything around you, there is no tension and your not ever dreading what is going to be around the next corner because you know it's just going to be some pissed off African wielding anything from a pick-axe to a glass bottle. Enemies aren't scary; where the frick are the zombies?! Every enemy encountered in the game looks like my freakin' neighbour! Even the boss "monsters". No sense of isolation; annoying AI partner follows you around chucking ammo, herbs and just about everything else at you. One of the great things about previous RE games was the feeling of being completely alone. Even RE4 managed to pull this off 'cos Ashley is f*cking USELESS. Too much ammunition; for some reason all majini carry a huge stack of bullets in their pockets to handily leave behind for you when you kill them. It would be better and more SURVIVAL horror-y if they limited the ammunition so you felt you had to conserve every bullet to stay alive. Shinji Mikami is gone; he was the true brains behind this series, it's a shame he left but I suppose he's gotta do what he's gotta do. :( With the above said I don't want to give out the impression that I dislike the game, quite the opposite. I find it one of my most enjoyable purchases, particularly the versus DLC and play it near constantly and am fully aware that CAPCOM is trying to move the story line on. (obviously we can't stay post-racoon city/zombie outbreak forever) But it does seem that the developers are straying a little too far from the original survival horror roots. I mean, even Africa can be scary, I suppose it's hard to set a sinister atmosphere in broad daylight but as I stated earlier, not knowing what was around the next corner would make game play much more intense and possibly for the weaker-hearted gamers (like my self :] ) quite scary. And variation to enemies and their behaviour is also important. Call me a wimp but I found the monk Ganado from RE4 quite disturbing with their painted faces and creepy voices as well as the accompanying theme song. However in Res 5, the Majini are too normal, CAPCOM could have been a little more imaginative with their portrayal of "evil spirits" and made them come across as more disconcerting and actually threatening rather than just annoying. And the soundtrack sets the scene for games and movies alike. Put in fast-paced music, you got action, slow, creepy chimes 'n stuff.. (I'm not really down with instruments) creates an eerier atmosphere in my opinion. Enough of me ranting though, I want to hear other peoples thoughts on the game; Good? Bad? Scary? Are you liking the action packed take on the Resident Evil series or do you prefer the traditional survival-horror theme that made it so popular? Please comment and if you can put what you really enjoyed about the game and/or what you thought could have been done better. :)

I never want to move to your neighborhood if your neighbors look like this. :?

:P Seriously though most of the points you made I agree with. I still enjoy the game as well though. Except for Sheva. I really freaking hate her. I just can't shake the feeling while I am playing it that I want to play it alone. :x

some of the old people resemble popokarimu (bat thingy) face-wise, your probably doing yourself a big favour staying away :D and yeah i totally agree with you, they could have put in parts where you and sheva get separated so you can play by yourself even if if its only for one chapter or something, and while you were separated it could be like night time or something to try and add a bit of classic horror feel to it.. anything would be better than sheva or chris following you around like a lost puppy for the entire game :\

Videogames rule #24: There's never such thing as too much ammunition. My reasons why RE5 is not scary:

- you feel like a war machine, a guy made of dumbbells with a fighting partner instead of a helpless little girl

- there's no creepy levels (nothing like the castle with the upside-down statues, the cave with the giant cocoon in RE4)

- chainsaw guys with a paper bag on their heads... again?

- you're too busy fighting the awful controls to get scared

By the way, the monks from RE4 were scary as hell. "Muere, muere, muere, muere..."

ahh so its not just me then, i was feeling like a bit of a dork cos tonnes of people said Res4 isnt scary *liars* ^^ and the controls dont bother me too much, though i see your point they are frustrating if your used to moving and shooting chris's new character model is quite ridiculous, yes, i mean how are you supposed to feel intimidated by something when your twice the size of it? :S as for sheva, she's just.. bleh

It's still considered as a Horror Adventure I suppose. It can give a nice scare to gamers new to the gene. Still, comparing only the horror element of the game it can't even light a candle to Dead Space, Silent Hill or Resident Evil before parasites stole T's seat.

What horror? There is none, except for the horror of what it has become in comparison to the previous ones and the games you mentioned. The action aspect of 5 is ok, but i bought the game for scares, the older games where T-virus and zombies were on the lose were imo the best, 4 wasnt bad, but they seem to be drifting further and further away from what is 'RESIDENT EVIL' :(

They turned RE to action shooter. Still I think the game is worth the play, just do not expect it to be Resident Evil 1-3 ... It is about the same as 4, but not as scary maybe.

It can be somewhat scary at some points when you are playing solo with an unpredictably dangerous AI. I remember the time when I'm kiting this chainsaw zombie, and Sheva simply stood idle at the only door, blocking my way and calmly handed me some ammo as I have my head sawed off.

that comes across as more frustrating than scary, its even worse when the AI is Chris, his body takes up your camera view and he ALWAYS just stands in your way Dx i wish there was a 'get the hell out of my way' command other than just attack and cover

ehh, i never gave her anything... because she just wastes ammo, sprays and grenades. All she had was the stun rod :P

She's quite good on the longbow if you just give her that, I mainly play as Sheva in campaign though, its Chris thats the problem, whatever weapon you give him he finds some way to annoy you with it. Grrr Hopefully CAPCOM will realize that RE just isn't meant to be a co-op game..

I don't think the game tried to be scary..well besides in the Lab with the Lickers but even then I wasn't too worried as I had a nearly fully upgraded shotgun.

It's a really good action game but it does lack the scare factor.

It is good in terms of an action game and I think what many people say is true; RE5 isn't actually trying to be scary, but that makes the 'fear you can't forget' tagline a little misleading. I did really enjoy the campaign as it was slightly refreshing it also has a lot of replay factor and online co-op is great, but I do hope RESIDENT EVIL will return to its horror style eventually, thats what it's famous for :) Many RE veterans will be pleased to see it aswell.

Kinda off topic...I still want to pick up this game. I missed the 20 dollar black friday deal, so I'm going to wait for whatever the next sale price is, but here's my ordeal: Which system should I pick it up for? My configurations are as follows...

PS3--connected through hdmi with 5.1 sound.

360--connected through component with stereo sound.

Both are running through a Denon receiver which also (optionally)upscales inputs other than hdmi to 1080p.

i agree, while it not a bad game- quite the opposite, it isnt survival horror, and sheva is the most pointless anoying b*tch of a partner ever portrayed in 3D.

This I agree with. Think that's why I loved SIlent Hill 3 so much, because the character in that was pretty weak, and the game was willing to do horrible, nasty things to her if you put one foot out of place. Resident Evil 5 feels more like your playing in a WWE Royal Rumble.

Nothing really pops up at you. Like Fear2. That game will scare you, even with the lights on. RE5 just has zombies that have guns and chainsaw's. Nothing really comes out of the blue scream or stares at you.

the RE series hasnt been scary since the 3rd. RE5 was more of a 3rd person shooter then a fear based game. Im not entirely sure but i think they announcedRE5 was going to focus more on combat then fear. I highly doubt anyone was even remotely scared by it.

The dialogue for all of the REs is so horrificly bad and the plotlines so ridiculous I never really found any of the games scary. Also, its worth noting that since RE2 characters have been bettered armed than the militaries of some developing countries.

the only time i was actually scared from it was when i thought i killed the first chainsaw guy you encounter, i ran up to the door that allows you to leave and it wouldnt open..i forgotthat i neededthe key to get out so i turned around and i see that bastard with the chainsaw headin right at me..since it was such a narrow passage i panicked and tried to run past him cuz it normally takes him a minute, he has to laugh for a bit then swing the chainsaw. i died lol, but i made sure he was dead after.

In the next game if they do it like RE4/5 over the shoulder style. They should have two different campaigns. One co-op and one single player. Like they did with the mercs in RE5. I hope they still keep mercs co-op in the next one, even if they do it RE2/3 style cuz to me co-op mercs was the best thing RE5 had going for it.

I agree with you there, yes I did enjoy 5 but it didn't scare me as the game clearly wasn't going for the classic 'scary, helplessness, nightmare-ish' vibes the other games gave off, instead it was 'lets run from point A to point B shooting things together!' which was immensley fun for a while but became repetitive, especially when you unlock mercs after which basically the same thing you do in the campain but with a timer. Still, atleast we get to play Jill in mercs.

We all know that the reason capcom added sheva was because of that stupid woman that watched the trailer and wrote a blog about it being racist.

i freaking hate when ur driveing the boat and hit something sheva yells "CHRIS YOUR GOING TO CAPSIZE US!".it is funny but its annoying.if u could keep doing the mission if ur partner died id just beat the liveing hell out of her with the shock stick, take the ammo, and move on.
