The Metal Gear series is called Metal Gear, right? So why does everyone call it Metal Gear Solid? Don't they aknowledge the original 2 games or do they think Metal Gear Solid is a different series. Why does this happen when there is so many references to the original games within the Metal Gear Solid games?

Metal Gear Solid is just the most popular out of the series. That, and Metal Gear for the NES wasnt really a good game, nor was it too popular. Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 on the other hand for the MSX are really good NES Games. I think the reason people refer to it as Metal Gear Solid is thats the game they remember playing back on the PS1, especially if you were born in the 90s like me.

Well it started out as Metal Gear, then morphed into Metal Gear Solid. That's what the series goes by now so that's what people call it.

well you have to remember that in the west there was no MG2 (snake's revenge doesnt count though it is a sequel), also the style of the game is different (3D as opposed to 2D), so sometimes they change the name for that.

sometimes games just have a different name for no reason, Super Mario World is technically Super Mario Bros 4, but it has a different name.

This.

Not to mention the games weren't even that good to begin with. The only reason I ever played them was to understand the entire story of the MG(S) universe.

The ones on the NES were not made by Hideo, so they turned out bad. The hardcore fans refer it as "Metal Gear", most of them at least:)

I refer to the series as Metal Gear. Simple as that. Snake's Revenge is an abomination that shouldn't have been created, doesn't really add anything to the storyline and goes against the core gameplay of Metal Gear. Metal Gear (MSX-version) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the other hand, are great games. The newer Metal Gear games are great as well, of course. It'll be interesting to see how Peace Walker fills up the the gap following the events of Snake Eater.

My dream is of course that Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake will get complete 3D remakes. I know some people argue that Metal Gear Solid was a remake of the first one in some ways, but an official remake would be fantastic. They should also release the first two games for download via PSN or something. They can be hard to come across, The Subsistence version of MGS3 is probably the "easiest" way of getting them. MG2 is also available for cell phones if I'm not mistaken.
