So i never played any of them. A thread here reminded me that.. and sparked my interest in the series, unfortunately, because now i have this itch and it wont go away..

Graphically speaking, my standards are non-existent because from my humble experience, i can play anything from GTA IV modded with ENB series, to Pong. If the gameplay is satisfying and for a game focused on story such as MGS, the story would need to grab my attention..

How is the gameplay, but more importantly, are the bosses mind boggling hard to the point of frustration, or are they just hard? This is about MGS 1 only, the rest of them are irrelevant until i finish the first one.

Is it worth 6$?

well technically MGS1 is not the first game, the first game is Metal Gear, which came out on the MSX and NES(worse version), and there was also MG2:Solid Snake.

at any rate, regarding MGS1, the biggest issue with the gameplay in hindsight is the lack of 1st person aiming. You can look in first person , but not actually shoot anyone (unless you have the JP only Integral version , which has a 1st person mode).

The other annoying part is that you have to select the keycard every time you want to open a locked door, though thats more of a minor annoyance then anything.

as for the bosses, they are not hard if you recognise a pattern , all of the bosses have a pattern to their attacks, and once you know what their weakness is and what their attack patterns are, its not too hard.

yes , the game is worth 6 dollars, its a great game, but I would also say its not for everybody.

Some is frustrating because you have to use your head. Beating most of the bosses comes down to skill.

Twin Snakes has little changes in it that downgrade it. different/worse voice acting , stupid matrix effects, visuals that in my eyes actually look worse in alot of ways then MGS2 (an earlier game).

well from my point of view, MGS1 had the best story of the series.

the reason being is that it strikes the right balance between endless cutscenes and gameplay. as you may have heard, both MGS2 and MGS4 are criticised (and rightly so) for maknig the player sit through alot of endless conversations and cutscenes , MGS4 did that particularly later in the game (act 3 had a cutscene that seemed to last over 30 minutes, its insane).

MGS1 has those moments too , but not as much , and MGS3 also strikes a good balance.

i remember riding my bike in the rain to Gamestop the first day it came out. Got a t-shirt, dog-tags and a military fox-hound hat as a bonus pre-order. Still the best MGS experience and definitely worth $6..i'd pay full price.

About MGS2.. I don't .. mind long cutscenes if they are interesting, and progress the story at least somewhat, i heard the stories are unnecesarly twisted anyway in the later parts after MGS1. I want to play trough MGS1, 2 and 3 (maybe 4 later wen i'm gonna get a PS3), i really like playing trough series of games and following their story. So one last question regarding the story aspect of the series. How is the story in MGS2? Is it a good game in your opinion.

well in my opinion MGS2 is the weakest in the series, but its still a 9/10 game . its not that its uninteresting, but its twisted. put it this way, I played MGS2 around 20 times or more, and until MGS4 came out and explained things I still didn't quite understand the whole story and before somebody tells me "I don't understand the political and philosophical issues of the game" , Im a university politics student, I basically deal with political theory and explanation for a living. if you get MGS3 though , try and get MGS3 Subsistence, as it has MG1 and MG2 in it, you should play them , as they are both very good games, MG2 especially.

Agreed, as much as I love MGS2 is had the weakest story of series. Not saying it is bad by any means, just that it is a bit convoluted in some parts especially towards the end. Regardless of what others may say about the games, it is a great series (my favorite in fact) and should be experienced by anyone who enjoys both great gameplay and a cinematic experience.

2 pics from MG2. which is one of my favourite games from the 8bit era, it takes the original MG and improves on it in every way.

MGS1 has alot of references to MG2, and its a game worth playing.

well of course, its somewhat rare, but if you can get it for a decent price got for it, MG2 is a really great game, with a surprisingly good story for a game from 1990.

MG1 is not as good , but it laid the foundations for the series, and is a fun game.

Subsistence also has other things included like a secret theater , and an online gameplay feature that is sadly offline by now

the last thing Subsistence has, is the camera options the original MGS3 has one camera option , the default one you can't control. Subsistence lets you choose between the original camera, and a fully controllable camera ,which in my opinion helps the game.

When buying the Subsistence MGS3, make sure you also get disc 2 as that is the disc that has MG 1 and 2 from the MSX.

The story in MGS1 is one of the best in all video games. It's simply enough to understand, but when you think back to it you start to ponder all about the message it is saying. This one has the most stealth in it due to not having first person view. Bosses feel diffrent and only one feels difficult due to slow gun movment.

MGS2 seams more "out there" compared to MGS1, but it makes more sense if you go deep enough into MGS3, but the story is still better then 90% of other games. There feels like there are fewer bosses in this game and they feel like there is less of a puzzle feel to them then MGS 1 and 3. I would say 5 or more cutscens go over the 15 min mark. I would call it the weakest of the first 3.

MGS3 is my favorite ( I have yet to pay 4 ) out of the first 3 games. I would say the story is on par or better than MGS1 due to the characters as well as the setting. The Bosses are just fun to go aganist and never feel cheap. I would say only 2 or 3 cutscens go over 20 mins.

well MGS1 does have a first person view, you just can't shoot while in first person. also , MGS Integral has a first person shooting mode, but its almost useless.

Just a heads up, the MGS Essential Collection that Konami released does include MGS3: Subsistence, but it does not include the bonus disk containing the original MG games.

I wanted to get MGS Essential Collection, but i couldn't find it anywere, man. (not ordering off the net this time, don't got enough patience to wait). They had 1&2, so i got them.

I've ben playing for 6 hours, my head hurts.. I finally managed to beat Liquid Snake in that helicopter, i love the bosses up to this point. And you bet i've checked a walktrough for Psycho Mantis. Not that hard, but Liquid was a pain in the butt. Though i know its not the end yet because i haven't even started the 2nd CD.

The story is not hard to follow at all, its simple, yet powerful in a sense that it grabs my attention. Snake is one cool mofo, and i gotta find out what happened to Meryl. My first impression of the graphics - horrible, i could barely see anything trough those gigantic pixels at first, it annoyed me because it interfered with my playtrough. I've seen far better looking games from the 90s, and on the PS1 (Crash Bandicoot 3 for example).

After about a hour, i got used to them though, i have no problem now whatsoever. The gameplay is top notch, the enviorments are great, the voice acting is great, and the story is powerful and fueled by these great characters. I want to finish it, so i can start with MGS2. I think i'm gonna become a MGS fan if the story keeps it up and Snake remains cool.

That's a good piece of advice you gave me, i can get all three of them in one nicely made pack for the PS2. 15$ used, all 3, damn it's a freakin' deal.

I recommend that, all three in one pack for the PS2 for 15 bucks is a great deal, but I'd recommend getting MGS2 Substance version and, like said, MGS3 Subsistence version, they're really good.

Btw Snake remains cool, but he's really stinkin' old in MGS4, not to spoil much but he's a clone of Naked Snake (you'll play as him in MGS3, and you'll understand the story even more then) and the cloning process that made him accelerated his aging, he's only 42 in MGS4, but he looks somewhat like a very muscular person in their late sixties. Oh, and after you beat MGS1, play it about 2 more times for a special song in the credits. In MGS2 get all the dogtags (I'll explain) to get stealth camo, (in MGS2, enemies have dogtags, you can see them with your thermal goggles on, to get a regular enemy's dogtag, you'll have to walk behind him and put up your USP/SOCOM, you'll hear your character say, "Freeze!" the enemy will hold up his hands, press the L1 button and you can walk in front of him, press R1 and aim at his head or at his crouch, he'll say, "Wait!" or something like that, then start shaking, and he'll shake out a dogtag among other items such as ammo, grenades, etc., there are a few enemies you'll not have such luck on, the first boss in MGS2 has to be picked up by pressing the square button with no weapon equipped and dragging her body, eventually you'll get a dogtag, there might be something else, I'd say get a guide for more help, and then there's some like Pliskin, who you'll meet later in the game, you have to punch-and-kick him until he's out and like the first boss, drag him around and drop him, I actually did it at the end of the game and got his, but the proper way is when you meet him for the first time, you can also make enemies shake out ammo in a similar fashion but without dogtags in MGS3, you have to do the exact same thing and he'll give you ammo, be sure not to do this too long though, if he's eyes shine, he's going to do something nifty, so be thrifty and beat the living snot out of him) and the first time you finish MGS3, you'll have a tuxedo in your camoflauge, by the way, when you get to MGS3, fight all the bosses with tranquilizer darts and if you find it, you can get their camo, quite helpful.

I've played them all and the only ones I don't really like are the metal gear acids. I'd probably say that the 3rd game is the best in the series overall, however my personal favourite was MGS1 on the PS1. Mainly because it was soo ground breaking at the time but also becuase (apart from boss battles) the game is truely about stealth and sneaking. Its been a while since I played it, but from what I remember, you don't really fire a shot the whole game (again, boss battles aside). I remember that I used to have to study the gaurds patrol routes and sneak past at the right times. It was really rewarding.

Finished the first one.. One of the best games ever made, hell, the emotional moments with Gray Fox, Sniper Wolf and Naomi finding out about her 'brother' later on, almost made me shed a tear, and i expected a twist, but damn i did not even think that Master dude would be who he was. I also like a lot of the speeches, i think they are good life lesons. The last 5 minutes were cliched, to be honest, but i couldn't ask for a more perfect, safe ending.

I honestly think the Metal Gear series should have ended at MGS 1 now. Snake got the girl, they were ready to start a new life, a new beggining together..

Time to find out what the hell happened, so i'll be ocupied with MGS 2 for a couple of days, God bless weekends.

Damn.. what a powerful game.

MGS2 also has a good story, but the main problem is that its overly complex, at times, particularly towards the end.......,

Time to find out what the hell happened, so i'll be ocupied with MGS 2 for a couple of days, God bless weekends.

Damn.. what a powerful game.

Lucianu

Snake actually didn't get the girl, they never married, probably because Snake didn't want to be a husband if he was fighting metal gear all the time. Meryl won't appear in MGS2 by the way, but she'll be in the fourth one.

I almost agree with you, although MGS3 is also a damn good game. The story stands well on its own, and every element of the game is on par or very close to on par with MGS1. MGS2 and 4 are good, but not as strong overall.

But MGS2 is more...crazy. You'll see what I mean at the end of the game, starting in a place called Arsenal Gear.

I actually am happy that MG2's story is crazy and overly complex, love those types of stories that keep me occupied in my mind, like thinking "What the ** is going on?!" and the likes. After the masterpiece that was MGS1, .. this series gets my top priority until i finish all of them with the exception of MGS4.

Yeah, but if the series ended at MGS 1, i think thats what would have happened and the story would have never moved on, you know.

By the way, don't sell your PS2 for the PS3 if you want to play the MGS games you have for your PS2, the PS3 has no backwards compatibility.

Enjoy MGS2, get the Substance version if you can. Probably my favorite game on the PS2, but I stopped the series at 2. It is ridiculously complex and by the end of the 2nd one you feel like your brain just came out of a blender. Fantastic game though, gripping, basically everything a game should be. Have fun.

MGS3 actually took a step back in terms of story complexity, its about as complex as the first. I approve of that change :P

I just don't understand how a few days ago I stopped the game in the wilderness because of Snake needing to rest, and the next time I play he's in a bed with guards storming the building.

he doesnt need to sleep , he needs food, find some fruit, works perfect. and the only place I can think of where you got caught like that was when fighting the End

Ha they're all amazing games. I played the series in reverse order, making an already complex story even harder to follow. I'm on MGS1 right now at the tank battle part. Fortunately I have the MGS4 database on my PS3 which I study every once in a while.

Cool, cool, i'm on that oil plant in MGS2, i'm on my way to save the president after talking to Aimes (and he died after that due to a 'heart attack', damn the similarities to MGS1 do not stop), and damn this current mission on the oil plant is so damn long.

I don't know, until now, i don't like the story or the characters as much as MGS1, in MGS1 the characters felt.. more alive, more fleshed out, the Colonel in MGS2 feels like a robot, and wen that black dude with the explosives died.. i didn't feel it.. I though the graphics were going to improve the immersion, but i was wrong. The story is interesting, but its not hard to follow at all until now. Also, i hope at least today i finish with that damn oil plant because i really wanna see some new enviorements. I'm sick of that oil plant.

I'm probably not even trough half of this game, so hopefully i'm going to see some cool characters, and some good twists later on. Maybe finish it today. I don't mind Raiden btw., he's a nice character, pretty ..dumb, but likable.

if youre up to the point of rescuing the president, I would say you are around 60-70% through the game . and the story does start to get confusing towards the end , after the "Oil Plant" or Big Shell as its called.

You better get used to The Big Shell as it is about 70% of all the environments you'll see lol.

Yeah, you're close. And I'll not spoil anything after this, but you're REALLY close when who have to walk under a guard who's urinating from an upper platform to where you're at.

Yeah, i'm way passed that point right now, i'm used to it.. i'm at the point after i got cought and i was naked, i met up with Snake and i just got the sword. Otacon's sister dying was kinda sad, damn ..

The story is pretty good about this illuminati type a thing with the patriots, its not complicated to follow, but that's because i've seen far more convulted stories in my life.

And now its really starting to get weird. The Colonel was acting like he was loosing it, really acting like a machine or something.. and Raven's girlfriend acted like weird as ** also, and then i saw a asian woman looking at me trough my radar..

This game ain't normal.. can't wait to see what the hell happened to those dudes, man i bet the ending is going to mind rape me.

A classic, but it was hard to get used to, I was familiar with MGS3, MGS2, and MGS Peace Walker, and I was thinking, "What the heck? I can't somersault!" for a while, but I got used to it.

Lucianu

Metal Gear Solid is an awesome game. It has a great story and has great gameplay. The controls for certain things can be a little frustrating at times but besides the tiny hiccups it's a great game and this doesn't really downgrade the experience at all. I liked Twin Snakes for the Gamecube which was a remake of the original but it is more over the top and some of the dialogue and cutscenes are cheesy. Hideo Kojima did this purposely though to poke fun a little bit. I do perfer the original but the remake is worth a couple of playthroughs I think. If you do play Twin Snakes just go into it knowing its supposed to be over the top and cheesier

then the original and take it for what it is. I'm a huge fan of the MGS series and I know every game inside and out so if you have any questions PM and I'll tell you all you need to know. MGS3 is my favorite out of the franchise still to this day. MGS: Peace Walker and MGS 4 are tied in second for me. The worst one gameplay wise for me was Portable Ops but the story was pretty good so it was worth forcing myself to play through it. They just made a lot of stupid mistakes in this game gameplay and controls wise.

Yeah, finished MGS1 a few days ago, i loved it. The story was simple to understand, yet powerful, and the characters were great, the voice acting was great, the missions were great.. I also finished MGS2 today. I gotta say, the story wasn't hard to follow, now what it was is that it was crazy later on wen the fake Colonel revealed who It was, and a couple of things just were not explained well enough, nevermind that some aspects were just illogical. Now besides that, i liked the story, and its conclusion. I liked the characters later on.. it was sad wen Otacon's sister died, overall great characters. Eh, 'till now i prefer the first one, still, i loved playing trough MGS2 despite its weird story.

The thing with MGS2 is you won't really appreciate it till the ending of MGS3 and all of MGS4. It gets better explained in those 2 games so whatever you had a hard time understanding or whatever wasn't explained very well is filled in...in the other games. I too enjoyed MGS2 but it was my least favorite out of the franchise besides Portable Ops story wise. You'll learn to realise as you go deeper in the franchise a lot of things seem illogical but get fixed as later games come out to make them more logical. MGS2 was a very misunderstood game and that is because a lot of things didn't make sense to people because there were a lot of plot holes and Hideo Kojima kinda went a little crazy with the story.
