The action-adventure genre is moving through a renaissance period, claims Splinter Cell: Blacklist developer game director Patrick Redding. In a video interview with GameReactor, the developer asserted that players are "really hungry" for its new game.

The action-adventure series is going through a revival period, says Redding.

The action-adventure series is going through a revival period, says Redding.

?I think something that we?re seeing is there?s been a real renaissance in action-adventure," he said. "And I think that we?re able to take a lot of the unique features of the Splinter Cell world and really embrace that opportunity.?

Redding further elaborated as to why he believes Splinter Cell: Blacklist offers what players are seeking from an action-adventure game.

"Players would like to have this kind of taut experience in a realistically rendered world, with a really good storyline, and with a hero who is lethal and efficient whose shoes they can step into," he said. "And I think we?ve got all three of those things.?

Splinter Cell: Blacklist was announced during Microsoft's 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing earlier this month. It is the newest entry in the series and puts players back into the boots of franchise hero Sam Fisher, as he takes on a new global threat. The game is due out during spring 2013 for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 with Kinect support.

Dammit!! You beat me to it. I was going to make this thread a**hole :P

Kidding. I love how they actually admit to Splinter Cell being a action/adventure game now. I still feel this will be a better game than Conviction in every single aspect but that doesnt say much.

At least they're smart enough to realize what they have turned their franchise into with Conviction ( "action/adventure" ). It's really funny for them to say fans are " really hungy" for their new game. How ironic. Your fans were "really hungy" for a stealth game, not a action game.

Instead they chose to chase Call Of Duty. Actually im not even "hungry", more like i have been starving to death since 2006. I'll buy this game used just to make a point ( or a rental ) & i hope the rest of you will do the same if you feel you dont like the direction either.

I wish action/adventure was in a renaissance. It's my favorite genre, but unfortunately it's all too easy to turn an action/adventure game into a shooter, and that must always be done because as most publishers will tell you, then it will sell Call of Duty-like numbers

I won't be buying this game at all, because I'm 99% sure of what it'll consist of. How can developers be so clueless as to come out and make statements like these?

99% percent of it consists of just murdering everything on sight. That's why I am not going to enjoy Blacklist as much, if I ever do play it. To me, they are walking away from what made Conviction so good and just making this a boring, generic TPS set in a typical atmosphere that just screams Call Of Duty all over it. I'm sick of it. At least with a game like Homefront, the enemy invaded our territory and changed the landscape for the worse, so why can't Blacklist do the same? It's just downright ugly, for sure...

I don't thik this guy is completely wrong, but splinter cell is definitly not spearheading a renaissance. I think modern warefare was the renaissance of the action adventure in that it brought up the standered of multiplayer and now everyone is trying to cash in on modern warefares idea even the new COD games as, other than nazi zombies, they can't come up with anything new or innavative anymore. I just hope that the indutry follow into the age of reason (or thinking i can't remember what it was called) rather than jump ahead into the future and ruin gaming!!

I have to disagree with him. I think that the action adventure genre is walking well into shooter territory, to the degree where the shooter components are outright dominant. These are games that are relying more on production values and polish to sell themselves, then exploring interesting and new concepts, thoughts or feelings. Action adventure has almost moved into the court of only empowerment. And that back patting empowerment, and constant positive feedback loops is a problem that's well outside of the current 'action adventure' genre, it's a more pressing issue at large. Which is why of all times we need Thief 4 more than we ever did. The hero video games deserve.

I have to disagree with this statement. They arent walking away from Conviction. It has the exact same design & mechanics as Conviction, in fact BlackList is Conviction 2.0. I would think it would be exactly what you wanted.

The entire beginning sequence of the E3 demo can be performed in Conviction. The only difference i saw between Conviction & Black List is that BL is adding more of the old SC features. Now im not looking forward to this game but im just gonna go out on a limb here say i think it will feature better stealth judging by the features i know will be in the game.

If anything it may actually end up more faithfull to SC, while still offering the action & design of Convicton. There's know way of knowing for sure, im just speculating here. I do have a little bit of optimism though after hearing the list of features in the game.

What i really want to see is an entire level. That would truly give us insight on to what kind of game its going to be. I just believe this game cant do any more harm than the last game, i can only see it being slightly better. We'll just have to wait & see where things go in the future.

Agree with most of this. I really enjoyed Conviction and the game play I've seen of Blacklist looks the same, so I am personally excited for it.. Has there been any game play shown other than e3? Because that was like a few minutes...

I highly doubt the storyline is good. I get hollywood action film feeling. And the game looks more like shooter that has aim assists switched to aimbot.

No, most contemporary action adventure games, like the new Splinter Cell, are far more action than adventure. The adventure might as well not even be there at all.

I wonder why game companies do this so often? Very rarely would you see a movie studio turn Gone With The Wind into a buddy cop sex comedy.

Admittedly, I"m only judging based on what I saw of the level and while I'm glad it retains few of the elements of Conviction, I'm not convinced that it's going to be a game that has the right to bear the Splinter Cell name.

As we know, Michael Ironside is no longer portraying Sam, which is pretty much one of the deal breakers for me. Him not playing the character is motivation enough to not buy the game in the end. But like you said, it's better to wait and see how things turn out, but as it stands, Blacklist won't be amazing, like how Conviction was, at least for me.

Splinter Cell is not action-adventure; it's stealth. You don't solve any puzzles, you don't have many opportunities for discovery and the game series for the mostpart is as linear as a yard-stick. Oh well, it's Ubisoft Montreal. I understand the Quebecois might hit a language barrier and they're probably just compensating for English words they have but don't want to use ;)

I find that most action-adventure games are merging more into shooters than anything. And in some cases, just full on shooters with a "unique" gimmick of some sort. It's quite sad, but I guess that's where the market is.

Blacklist isn't Splinter Cell. They need to look at Chaos Theory, and start from there.

I'll give them credit for at least being honest and not even pretending that splinter cell is still a stealth series. Action Adventure games are indeed undergoing a Renaissance, they're all turning into shooters with the player traveling down a corridor for 10 hours.
