I'll give you a little background: I've been out of gaming for quite some time. I was huge into when I was younger (born 1985), had a nintendo, sega genesis, SNES, playstation 1 & 2 and n64 when I was younger. Throughout the years, due to work, college, relationships, etc, I've become a casual gamer at best. My latest console is a wii, and that's because an ex girlfriend got it for me for Christmas (trying to find something we could "do together"). I'm a huge rpg and jrpg fan. I used to be enthralled with them when I was younger, playing 50+ hour games just for fun. TL;DR, I've recently had more time and money on my hands and am looking to get back in. I admit I'm a bit of a nostalgia guy, I am more apt to pine for 2d or early 3d games, not really sure why. I would really appreciate some advice on where to get started, maybe some games to look into. I am willing to spend some money to get a good console (preferably, I would rather have console than PC, but if there are some good for PC, I can change my outlook). Here is a list of games I love, as a basis for my tastes: Breath of fire 1-3 Final fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 Chrono Trigger Secret of Mana Secret of Evermore Super Mario RPG ( I know, I know ) Illusion of Gaia Kingdom Hearts I really appreciate your recommendations.

I have very similar tastes, and I can tell you that the following games were fun for me. I enjoyed all the games in your list, so hopefully you will enjoy these games: Devil Summoner OC Etrian Oddyssey III (IV comes out in a month, 3 is a DS Title) Harvest Moon Pokemon (obviously) There's also a Kingdom Hearts 3D game, but I have not played it.

It seems you are looking for jrpgs for the wii then? The best ones I have played to date are xenoblade chronicals and Last story. They both have that old-schooly feel while working in some of the new age mechanics.

Actually, I'm willing to purchase any console to find something I would enjoy playing.

I would suggest both Persona 3/4 as they are great RPGs. If you are looking for a hard JRPG try SMT: Nocturne. Those 3 games are on Ps2 neither are that recent nor that old. If you're into the 2D-ish style, despite it not being a JRPG Bastion is an awesome downloadable game on xbox360 that I think? came out on PC too. its a little more action oriented and not turned based but it is a good looking game with a classic feel.

Looking at the games you play and your willingness to get any consoles, here are my suggestions:

Earthbound (SNES)

Xenogears (PSx)

Chrono Cross (PSx)

Legend of Mana (Definitely for you, Psx)

Any of the games from the Tales series (various consoles)

Star Ocean Series (SNES, PS1, Ps2, PS3)

Grandia (PSX)

Persona 3-4 (PS2, PS3)

Valkyrie Profile (PSX)

Dragon Quest VIII (PS3)

So ultimately if you still got that SNES laying around or can get your hand on a backward compatible PS3/PS2, you should be okay :)
