It has its downsides for sure, but I suspect that the big three will move towards digital distribution as their main focus on the next gen systems.  Digital Distribution is the perfect way for Sony, MS, and Nintendo to isolate their customers from the competition.  If I'm shopping for games on the Sony store, I'm not seeing what MS or Nintendo has to offer.  I'm not saying it is a good thing for us, but it sure is for them.  I suspect the next gen consoles will have disc drives, but only for backwards compatibility/ home entertainment hub purposes.
Thats my guess anyway...

I'm afraid the next big change will be to digital downloading. A lot of media is having the option to purchase it online. I for one don't like this, it's just a virtual thing, nothing physical to prove you own it really.

Couldnt agree more. I couldnt care less what format the discs are, just let me go to the store and buy a hard copy of it in a case! I really hope digital distribution doesnt replace making games on discs in cases anytime soon.Altho I know it will eventually.

to distribute games through digital dowloading is not a good move. the harddrives would have to be huge to store the games, i mean some games on the xbox 360 were 9 gigs, and the harddrive could only hold 113 gigs (now), it used to be only 13 gigs, but that is only enough for like 1 game, unless they make the games way smaller, by the next console everyone will want hd graphics which take up a lot of space so i dont think digital downloads are a smart idea.

what I will miss from discs is the art in it. developers have found creative ways to get by the round shape like the morph ball disc for prime.

Cartridges will never return. Better disc technology is developed, so discs are probably here to stay.

Nope. There's always gonna be loading time with discs. Although discs with faster loading times are being developed, but they also have larger storage capacity - more data to read (larger games) - so I don't really know.

^^^^That's his point though eventually cathridges will be able to hold enough memory and do everything a disc does without loading. :)

This debate could go on for ages, because that's how long it's going to take for companies to start using something other than discs. There's just nothing "safe" for companies to use right now without getting they're code/game ripped off. I'd like to say Digital Downloads will be the way things will turn, but let's face it, that's like handing over the game to hackers to distribute for free. Not like that will ever change, there will always be that someone that has to hack a particular game/system.

It'll be atleast another 10-20 years before we see any real changes in this area.
