it seems weird, that after waiting all this time for halo3 one call of duty 4 multiplayer beta has really tarnished the release of the bungie monster for me. i find myself anticipating november 5 much more than the oh so close 25th. or, maybe i'm just crazy....

I don't think you're crazy, but I think they're going to be different enough experiences that they'll both hold their own.

I've been playing COD4 though, and it IS awesome. Very awesome. Awesome enough that it's going to pull me away from Halo online quite often, which says something seeing as I've never really cared much for a realistic shooter enough to say that. I've loved Socomand Rainbow Six, but they were second-rate compared to Halo 2. I can't say that about COD4 -- it's just fantastic.

Still, Halo has The Forge and all the saved replays -- it'll be just fine. Still not gonna stop me from playing the hell out of COD4, though.

So Shame-Us, you think COD4 is a better tactical shooter than Rainbow Six? That's saying a lot considering this dev was used to working with older time periods and this is their first modern day shooter.

What does the game bring to the table? How were the rifles/weapons? Was there a discernible difference and benefit to using some than others?

I am not a huge Halo fan to begin with, but I was thinking of picking up Halo 3 when it was released. As for CoD4 I was thinking "oh yeah the same CoD gameplay again". I wasn't looking FW to it at all.

Like you the COD4 demo has made an outstanding positive impression on me. I wasn't much interested in it before but yeah I'm pumped for it now. The catch is the beta dies on the 30th I hear and that's a long month between the end of the beta and the game. I think I'll have to pick up both but if released closer together I would have picked up CoD 4 first, no question.

It's not that it's a better tactical game, only more fun to play. I only meant that out of Rainbow and Socom (which I both loved), Halo 2's online mode was overall a better experience and had more legs so to speak. They're entirely different types of games Rainbow and COD4, but they still share common bonds.

The most impressive thing about COD4 is the level design. You start out as a lowly grunt and unlock classes as you progress, but it's how wonderfully the levels are designed for these new classes that stands out. Each and every class can do well in this game based on the design, whether you're rushing in with an assault rifle or camping with a long rifle.

If your team gets 7 kills in a row, you gain support options, be they radar or air support in the form of a chopper or an air strike that rains down hell on the opposing team. It's very much Battlefield in that sense, although the Battlefields I've played didn't feel anywhere near as nice as COD4 does.

The weaponry is very responsive, but not as realistic as Rainbow's. While that would be a detriment in a tactical game, the more arcadey nature of COD online is perfect for it. Everything in the game just feels super solid, very done, for lack of a better descriptor. And so far, it plays almost flawlessly.

I know it sounds like a copout, but you really need to play the game to get it. You can get yourself a key by pre-ordering the game at EB, by the way. Give it a try, man. I really think you'll like it. I sure do.

I wasn't all that impressed with COD4, honestly.

The combat didn't feel all that tactical, it felt very loose (which is how I tend to feel about most console shooters). Ranks and upgrades are a nice thought, but its done better in other games.
