Do you really think all Japanese Role-playing games are the same when it comes to plot and character designs? I mean take for instance XenoGears it wasn't one of those cliched RPGs with the young teen I must save the world and have super Powers or the MC is half-demon looks like a girl like the Tales of games. What is your opinion( lets discuss)

No, of course they aren't, but the that doesn't mean the title "JRPG" doesn't mean something to me. When I think of the typical JRPG I think of Anime and the androgynous male who has to save the world/galaxy/universe, a turned-base battle system, ya know, the works. But that doesn't mean that they're all like that. There's a reason JRPG's have the stereotypes they do, but there will always be exceptions.

Sometimes they can be but not all of them are. I think it's just that people sometimes tailor games to what is popular and sells. But I think this is a bit true about all genres not just jrpgs. I mean, how many fps games follow the same super badass marine fighting aliens in space theme? And how many gta clones came out after 3 came out? There will always be certain games that stick out and then a buttload of copycats in every genre.

It's true. Look at RE4 copies coming out now... It doesn't only happen in RPGs.

I think that a lot of jRPGs turn out that way and RPGs in general turn out that way because it's something to be desired.  When you are young overall you are a less powerful person, not in the sense of magic, but financially and emotionally etc.  When wrighting a story people write based on opinions and beliefs and if many people believe in a younger, new youth, evincing a sense of innocense to overpower an older tyrannical/omnipotent spectre.

It is an architype that many stories fall into whether you notice it or not.  Take a cop movie for example.  A new recruit comes on and is eager to prove his worth.  Through a series of events, tragic or not.  The "old powers" or higher up are disbanded or proven wrong in the end.

It's a story that many younger people can and want to relate to.   I personally like jRPGs, but enough newness/twists need to be thrown into the story to keep me interested.

here are some examples of RPGs that I like, Grandia 2 (pretty generic, but very well done!), Eternal Arcadia (I can't praise this game enough), Xenogears episode 1 (the story was beautifully laced with religious overtones), Final Fantasy X.....

There are countless good and bad RPGs out there.   Don't throw a whole genre out just because there are some bad ones.

Well, I think it's not just JRPGs that follow or tend to follow a formula. So in some ways, it's kind of an unfair statement to accuse JRPGs of being all the same. That should be the right answer...but sometimes I do feel what you're saying.

After playing tons of JRPGs, I do sometimes feel that I'm playing the same ol` games with no new experiences. There have been a few that really provided a awesome experience, but for the most part, a lot of these JRPGs make a living catering to the same market that's been around for years...the anime/manga market, basically. I think most JRPGs are practically interactive manga/animes. It's really the same when you think about it, just different channels of entertainment.

So as long as the manga/anime scene is alive and hot in Japan...I don't see a change anytime soon. Yet there will be an occasional gem in the mix that is truly innovative and original...but it will be few and far between.

Yes,basically all games of a genre are the same. But ever tried to compare Grandia,FF8 and a game ofAtlus (actually all different from each other, including Persona 1-3,who are NOT SMT in original). All FPS are the same too but try to compare Riddick,Halo and Half-Life...

The Storyline differs in all genres not much...You save the world, yourself or your girlfriend or daughter. If not you have to get home from another dimension or planet. That´s it...it´s not like Movies are different. Is it important???I say no as long as I am entertained.BTW Second Sight and Farenheit are the only games with a pretty unusual Storyline in the last years...

Most of the "mainstream" ones are, yes. Games like Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Odin Sphere, Shin Megami Tensei and the like are not mainstream and very different in many ways from their mainstream counterparts. Same with anything, you need to look past the mainstream if you want to discover the true beauty of the grouping you are looking at.

Sounds like you've personally played RPGs that are unique and unlike most other games.

Persona 3 really is different from every other RPG I've played.

Are all sports games the same since they feature the same players and mechanics every yearly update? Are first person shooters the same because they involve guns and often times space marines and aliens?

Not a very insightful look into a tired way to bash JRPGs.

To continue through the door you opened up to edify our friend here

Then compare and contrast to Xenogears, to Chrono Trigger, to Star Ocean, to Parasite Eve to Earthbound to Final Fantasy 7.... the list goes on.

All of those games have VERY different plots and sets of characters (not to mention game mechanics and play and art style). While most of those were games made by Square or Squaresoft or Enix, they are all vastly different.

All the same? Exactly the opposite.

They're the most diverse genre of video games on the planet, next to maybe generic Action.

compared to any other genre, RPG has most variety.

I think more people would agree that all FPS is the same than all JRPG being the same.

Thats is what funny about it alot of people don't. They tend to think JRPG's always has the metro sexual with spiky or scene hair stylesthat has super powers and has to save the world.

Yeah, they often got spik or funny colored hair and have to save the world with superpowers, but thats just a shell for the game which doesn´t really matter. The special of every RPG is how the story is told.Grandia 3 for example had a medicore storyline in his basics but thanks to the great character acting and warm-hearted scenes it get´s you.I think the game was really touching and that´s in fact unique and you won´t see that in a FPS or in any other genre.

Ever wonder whypeople get into RPGs in the first place? Really, when you think about it, they're kind of tedious, boring, and a chore aren't they.

Honestly, even though I've played tons of JRPGs in the past, I think the stories and plots in them border more on insanity and ridiculousness ratherthan thoughtful, compelling narratives that really mean something. In that sense I think they could come off as being the same. The stories really make absolutely no sense most of the time, and even when they do, it's shallow and mellodramatic and doesn't quite hit the target at the point it's trying to make.

I think JRPGs have insane storylines. They make absolutely no sense whatsoever and they have no coherance. I don't know how many times where I was playing and I said, "What the hell?" to what I just played. It's just bizarre, whacky stuff.

I seriously don't even play JRPGs for the story anymore. I only look for three things now:

1. Fun gameplay and battle-system.

2. Attractive and good character designs.

3. Not a requirement, but I also look for development quality, meaning the level in production values, graphics, world design, etc.

If one of those isn't to my liking than it would just be a waste of time playing them.

I really don't care about the story anymore because I already know before I purchase a JRPG what I'm getting into storywise. It's going to be insane, it's going to be bizarre, it's Japanese manga/anime-styled storytelling, so I know what I'm getting into.

And this is what we're trying to tell people here that some of the stories in JRPGs might sound alike but they're not alike actually. Just because they have a spiky-head character in a game doesn't mean they all have the same storyline.

The main reason I play JRPG's are for the story and characters and most of the time the plots do make sense
