So I'm playing Metroid Prime 2 and I remember how much I hate water levels in video games. I hated the one in the first Prime. I didn't like the one in Twilight Princess either. I didn't even like them in God of War. Come to think of it the only water level I kind of enjoyed was in the NES Mario Bros. Remember the water levels in Sonic? Gah! Post up your most hated water levels.

No, you are not the only one. I am totally with you, and so are many others.

I don't mind the Twilight Princess one too much though, but usually hate them Zelda. They are O.K. in 2D Mario though, (not so much in 3D)

i dunno, i see where you're coming from, but some games EVERY level is water (Jet moto, Wave Race64, Ecco the dolphin), but yeah games that are fun on land, tend to be less fun in water. Sonic is too slow underwater, and the fact that he can run out of air is annoying. nothing worse than running out of air in Sonic the hedgehog..... but i like water levels in God of War and Mario games.

Sonic's water levels were the worst. That panic inducing music as you would run out of air still haunts me :P. But I don't really mind water based games. I really like Wave Race and Ecco. Come to think of it,Donkey Kong Country's water level wasn't that bad either.I just hate water levels in other games. They usually kill the pacing of the game and are plain frustrating IMO.

ugh sonic..that jaws music whn your running out of air... its unavoidable sometimes.. the put the bubbles so far.

i dont know why it would bother you in god of war..he has infinite breath.

mario 64 water levels were fine for me :P

but yea.. when there is a water level where you run out of air.. i hate it.

Totally agree. They shouldnt even bother putting water levels in platformers. Theyre just annoying because theyre slow and you usually have limited air.

They just kill the mood of otherwise great games.

Ugh yes, I always have and always will hate water levels with a fiery burning passion!!!!!

The water levels in Sonic were the worst. In the Chemical Plant levels in Sonic 2, I was absolutely traumatized by those levels as a kid! When I was little I'd always keep falling way down to the bottom of the screen and that music would start playing for time running out and I know there's no possible way I could get to the top again before time ran out. I'd waste about 20 lives on that level and end up crying because it was just so damn frustrating!!!

The water levels in any of the Super Mario games I also hated. It's so difficult toNOT float into all the bad guys with the way the controls are and you're completely defenseless unless you have the flower. Otherwise you're just basically trying to float away from everything which is such a pain. What's the fun if you can't do anything!!

Same goes for all the donkey kong country/land water levels. You're defenseless unless you get to be the swordfish which doesn't always happen. I don't like the idea of being completely useless.

Don't even get me started on the water levels in TMNT with that electric seaweed. I really don't see how it could possibly get any worse than that.

So basically, I have yet to see a water level that is good. I'm still haunted by the water levels I've faced as a kid.

I hate the Crash Bandicoot 3 Water Levels and back in the day I hated the Sonic water Levels, although the song that played whilst drowning was rather memorable.

I donot think your correct on that. I think that Water levels are love it or hate it type of thing, and I know alot of people that do enjoy water levles. Gamespot does not encompass "most" people. As for me, it depends on the water level. Some are done right some are not...Same with Sewer levels I have seen good ones and I have seen bad ones. They are hit and miss....

It depends. Some games have great water levels, like Ristar and Wario Land III.

But yeah, the Sonic games are definitely a pain the behind when it comes to underwater excursions.

I've always hated water levels: your characters move very slowly, they can't use their usual weapons, and tend to handle clumsily.I'm surprised there's so many water based levels in a lot of games...A pre-requisite for being a game designer should be that you are a fan of video games, and if you were a fan wouldn't you realize how unpopular water levels are? I honestly feel they're nearly always a game developer's lazy attempt at adding variety to the game...It's very rare, but I have played ones that I've enjoyed - Donkey Kong Country series and SM64 come into mind. So I agree with Magus' statement ofwater levels being a 'love it or hate it' thing, just with a bigger majority of people being on the hate side.

I don't mind under water levels all that much. Even though lava levels aren't like under water levels, those tend to be the levels I die the most in.

I can't think of a game where I hate the water levels. My wife can't stand water levels on any game though... she always hands the controller over on thoses stages for me to beat. I thought the water levels in DKC were brilliant, and I actually like the water level on TMNT. Water levels are howeverusually a littlemore difficult and make small mistakes less forgiving. The only couplegamesthat I can think of that I wasn't a huge fan of the water levelsare Mario 64, and the Super Mario Galaxy games on the Wii. Even they aren't bad and I love the penguins, so.. it's mixed feelings. Overall I would say that since water levels are usually far and inbetween, they dont bother me at all, and I think they add a much needed element to some games.

Ice and water themed levels in general tick me off. I hate the sliding effect on ice levels in so many games, and how it messes with jump timing and etc. I disliked water levels in general as well because it also tends to turn the game in questions mechanics on it's head. I still hate the water levels in Super Mario Bros. It's just awful stuff.

My main distaste for water levels comes from Sonic. Because underwater physics were a pain. Luckily, the better levels let skilled or adventurous players skip the underwater segments by exploring or not falling into traps.

Mario generally has decent ones. Actually, I LOVE most Mario water levels, especially in 64.

Donkey Kong Country has amazing water levels, imo. The movement is just so fluid and easy. Shame Rare couldn't get that same magic into 3D. Atlantis was one of my more "meh" experiences in Banjo-Tooie, though the music made up for it.

Ocarina of Time's water temple was a pain, yes, but I think it had more to do with general dungeon design and "that one key" than the water gimmick. I thouroughly enjoyed Lakebed Temple in TP, and I haven't really played any 2D water levels in a while so I can't remember them.

Actually, looking back, I love a lot of water levels. Hrm...whaddya know?

Yeah, I don't like Ice levels much but they're more tolerable than water levels. I can't stand poorly implemented vehicles in games either BTW

The only water levels I like in video games are the ones that don't require to to find air bubbles for air OR don't have a time limit requring you to resurface for air. I know this is largely unrealistic, but its fun not having to worry about oxygen in video games.

I hated the water levels in teh sonic games, but I loved the water levels in the Donkey Kong country games.

Nope, almost everyone hates them. They're almost never done well because the gameplay has to change as if water physics apply even though the game may not be designed for it.

Really? Sir I suggest you learn that there is a far bigger world out side of these forums. Water levels are hit and miss, that is a pure fact actually. And saying that Nope almost everyone hates them is simply a false statement as well, as that you truly donot know. People such as you and I are in the minority as that we post on forums, the majority of the gaming actually does not.

I remember having a lot of trouble with the water stage in Blackwater City on Ratchet and Clank the first time I plated through it, such that I ended up cheating and getting the O2 mask early so I wouldn't drown. Though on a more recent playthrough I had no trouble with it.
