When playing MGS3 and a few driving games on the PS2 I discovered the X, circle, square and triangle buttons have two intensities depending on the force you apply with your thumb.

I was wondering: are the PS2 and PS3 the only consoles with analog controller buttons (buttons, not sticks or triggers)?

I noticed the xbox and I think the 360 as well have standard digital buttons.

This thing sony invented is great. It's a good technology everyone should implement.

The original Xbox had analog face buttons. It also had much more than 2 intensities (256, IIRC) which I'm sure also applies to the PS2/PS3 buttons. As for 360, on the PC the buttons presses come in as digital. It may be possible to get analog data from them on the 360, but I doubt it since I'm pretty sure its the same SDK for PC and 360. Either way, it was a very rarely used feature to begin with.

I have a friend who swore by them when playing Gran Tursimo on the PS2, but I could never get a hang of it. Playing driving games with the Xbox 360 triggers feels more natural to me, but he hates it. I guess it comes down to preference.

I talked about two intensities because that's the maximum the games I played use. I remember cursing MGS3's aiming system until I realized a light press would aim and a deep press would fire. In Stuntman I finally found something I had bee longing for since Driver 1: the ability to regulate speed by varying pressure on the X button. Real cool.

So you say the xbox A, B, X and Y button are analog too? I never thought they could be until you said so, because no game I have uses that feature. Yet I've noticed sometimes you have to deeply press a button for the command to register. Guess that means you're right: they're analog but with a single intensity used.

I only have 1 game that fully uses that function.

The Bouncer.

Yup, they were definitely analog. I made a 2D Xbox game a long time, and you get data from the face buttons as a value from 0 - 255. Only retail game I know of that actually used it was DOA volleyball, in a minigame where you had to control how high your character jumped with how hard you pressed the A button.

I wonder why after spending millions in designing and producing analog button joypads they never made games that used them, not even internally developed games. Ok, I know it's microsoft and you have to expect some silly thing sooner or later, but this really beats me.

As a PS2, NGC and XBOX owner I concluded that the XBOX is the best 128 bit console, but choices like the buttons thing really make me shrug.

By the way, I'm kinda into game-dev too, what's your game about?
