Dont get me wrong, hes outrageously funny. But i lost my faith in his reviews! i got top gun for NES, and i landed the plane my first try. He spend 10 minutes complaining about it. I also bought Friday the 13th (first NES game i bought with the box!) and im addicted to this game! Every once in a while i even jump. But AVGN thinks its one of the worst games ever made because the rocks are arched and the map doesnt work. Well the map is extremely useful and it shows where you are AND you can crouch so when you throw the rock, you hit the monsters right in the nads. Now top gun is not that great of a game, but friday the 13th ill go out of my way to play every once in a while. So now im trying to get all of the games he reviews to see if they really are as hard or crappy as he says. Does anyone else have any stories like mine or at least agree with me? Thanks for sharing!

Everyone has a certain degree of skill when it comes to video games.

Everyone also has their own personal opinions on games.

With that said, it's very well possible that the AVGN isn't exactly the best gamer around, and it's also very well possible that the games he hate will have the opposite affect on you.

You have to remember he does make these reviews to be entertaining so he picks up on little annoyences and blows them up making them seem worse then what they are.

He's said before that he plays the game as an average gamer would. Also, it is a show made for comedy, so I am sure things are exaggerated for the sake of laughs.

AVGN admits to exaggerating in his reviews, so yes, some of the games aren't as crappy or hard as he makes them to be.

Yeah i know he exaggerates. So if i could steer this forum more to the direction of any personal stories of fun games he does reviews on. Or anything on that note. Thank you for everyone responding!

I don't think he is very funny to be honest. I mainly only like him when he gives good information, which is rare. Most of the games he bashes are really not that bad, and especially were not that bad in the 80's. I know he does what he does to get people to watch, but it's ridiculous to think that every Nintendo game could somehow live up to Super Mario Bros. 3, or Legend of Zelda. There obviously was not as much thought put into games in the 80's as there is now either. The company came up with a gimmick or a license and made a quick game about it. And usually you liked it because you didn't know any better.

Some people will give a bad review on it but you will love it. Take Mercenaries 2 for example. I loved it no one else seemed to.

I always considered him an entertainer before a reviewer. I think he has the ability, but failing and getting pissed off is his whole shtick! he probably does it on purpose.

If he can't play games, would James Rolfe make a review of his own for a 360 game?

Yeah he can, he just exaggerates stuff sometimes to make it seem worse. However, he does play pretty damn good when you watch the gameplay. I'm quitesure he'd kick my ass if we were playing Mario or something.

The downside is he failed at Castlevania 64.
He didn't even try to hit the C action button in the Castle center for putting down the Magical Nitro and Mandragora
I think at that point he's excused for failing when the game had been one long failure right from the beginning.

He won just by getting to that part in the first place.

All I know is that yes, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde really is that bad, Festers Quest is terrible, but not as bad as he makes it out to be, and he must have an amazing amout of skill/patience when playing those Wisdom Tree/Color Dreams games, because they are all very, very poorly developed. Imagine Ice world in SMB3, their all like that. It really is terrible.

But yes, he has admitted that he blows a lot out or proportion, and that it is for the sake of comedy. Oh, and Back to the Future really is as bad as he makes it out to be. That milkshake stage is practically impossible!

I believe he is actually a really good game player, but will do stupid things to point out the obvious faults with a game. That said, though he does tend to blow a lot of games out of proportion, the games he usually picks do have a knack for being on the more difficult side throught the gaming world, such as Dick Tracy and Top Gun. To say "I lost my faith in him because I did it on the first try" is a very ignorant statement, no offense. It's kind of like saying "well I can run the mile in 5 minutes, why can't you?" Everyone has different skill levels at everything. Whether known or not, Top Gun definitely has the reputation of being one of the more difficult games out there.

Not especially. And considering the game came out in 1999, you have to wonder how much appreciation some of those reviewers would have for it today.

Gamespot - 8.2/10. That's all I need. I played it for my first time only about a year ago. I enjoyed it greatly. Probably was underrated because the game was overhyped and was different from what people were used to.

Sure he's a real gamer. Havent you seen his game collection? He even made a video for his NES collection, alone that was huge.

Irented Friday the 13th back in the day and if I remember correctly the thing about it was is that you could never tell if you were headed in the right direction since going left and right moved you all about the camp. Sure you could look at the map but youd have to keep checking it all the time. The game may have been playable but that is not good design no matter what you thought of the rest of the game.

Ghostbusters on NES is also truly a horrible game. I used to have it until a year or so ago. Everything he says in his review is spot on, no exaggrating there.

Just because he says a game sucks doesn't mean he hates it. Whenever he reveiws a game he focuses on the bad aspects of it rather then the good aspects (it says on his webpage).

That's true. Even if something sucks, you could still enjoy it. I kind of enjoyed Mercenaries 2 and I always enjoy Dynasty Warriors games for a little while, do they suck, of course they do.

You realize the AVGN is actually just a character. The creator, James Rolfe does more mature reviews as himself than his angry gaming nerd form.

Your ignorance is making me cringe.

Besides, a lot of AVGN fans aren't even James Rolfe fans. Meaning that they only watch AVGN and completely ignore Cinemassacre. If you actually watched some of his stuff that isn't AVGN related, you'd be singing a compeltely different tune.

well you see, the only reason i said this is because james grew up in this era. hes been playing these games since he was a boy. it was his only choice for video games. My bro in college introduced me to the nes so i started playing it. Im 15 right now. So i just figured that with his years of experience. Whatever. You're right. Its just my train of thought at the time. And yeah after reading these forums, you can see that he is a skilled gamer. So ill give him that.

If you want to see a perfect example of exaggeration and deliberate dismissal of attributes to a game, watch his latest retrospective of the Castlevania series. His rants on SoTN are very weak at best, and barely scratches the surface of its content. The whole thing just sounded like an elitist searching for the slightest excuse to like Super Castlevania IV over SoTN.

LOL, "rants".

He clearly likes SOTN (unless he meant something else by "I think it's an amazing game"). He just prefers SCIV because it's a very different gameplay styIe that happens to appeal to him more. Just because he doesn't treat it with the breathless reverence you apparently expect doesn't mean he's bashing it.

This is exactly why people get mad at Zero Punctuation; they assume that the tone of the review immediately means that the reviewer holds the game in contempt, even though they use the same tone almost all the time.

I know that opinion is opinion, and I could care less which he likes better, but the fact still remains that it's still a perfect example of exaggeration and dismissal of game's attributes, plus weak complaints. When did I ever imply that I expected him to treat SoTN with praise and nothing more? And when did I imply that he didn't like it either?

You said straight out that he was an "elitist" and was "searching for the slightest excuse" to prefer one game over the other, as if his personal preference wasn't actually valid. Again, personal preference. He didn't "dismiss" anything. He didn't say one game was in fact better than the other. He just explained his reasons for preferring SCIV's style, which were perfectly understandable since the two games are so very different.

There's a huge difference between saying 'sounds like an elitist' and actually calling him one. You guys are going on about me misinterpreting his stuff when you guys are doing the same with me. If I don't say something, I don't mean it.

No, there really isn't. When you say "The whole thing just sounded like an elitist searching for the slightest excuse to like Super Castlevania IV over SoTN," that implies that he is, in fact, an elitist searching for the slightest excuse to like Super Castlevania IV over SOTN. There's no other way to construe that statement. You wouldn't say that he sounded like that if you didn't think it was true.

I think what he does is talk about how he felt when he originally played the games. It's entirely possible when he was younger that he had a lot of trouble landing the plane in Top Gun. I did find it funny how he says the little numbers are useless on the side, but they clearly are there to tell you to match them up so that you can land it.

His videos are for fun. He plays like a normal player, he blows things out of proportion. His reviews aren't serious. He's even admitted to liking a lot of the games he does *review*

I think deep down, he still loves the games that he hates. Sounds weird, but seeing as he is a game collector, he must have some feelings for the games. I've tried Dick Tracy for the NES, which has, as he says, horrible driving mechanics and ridiculously unfair. I also have played Dragon's Lair. The game is just horrible, and unfair to boot. It defines trial-and-error. I did get past the point he showed in the videos, but the game continues to just pile on the suckage. I must say that AVGN is a rather skilled player, though. He's finished a large number of difficult games without Game Genie or cheats. That's something.

The AVGN has stated in the past that he can easily land the plane on Top Gun but he just fills it in like that for the drama and humour. Same with most other games he reviews. And keep in mind he reviews most games from a 80's child's (under 10) perspective.

His reviews are for comedic purposes. Hell; he even admitted to liking a lot of the games he picks on. McKids, Castlevania 2, and a few others. THOUGH a lot of the games he does videos on REALLY suck; like that Silver Surfer game...

The AVGN is a character written and played by James Rolfe. He reviews games in an exaggerated, over-the-top manner; and his opinions don't always necessarily reflect those of the guy playing him.
