No but the problem is other than me and few other peope no one was around or had those consoles. I would love to talk about the technical impress of Coleco Visions Turbos, or games on the 2600/7800/Atari PC like Montezumas Revenge which was the ideal platformer. Heck I actually enjoyed the 7800 better than the NES (Which came out before) at first until the game drought, but I got the Lynx so I was happy.

I am not sure where you got nostalgia from but ok. My point was barely anyone had or was old enough to even play when released those consoles.

I know that. I was reading it differently. I was wondering why he would say that unless he thought 2600 games came with a 7800. Which was why I said it was odd. It didn't seem like he was saying that he brought 2600 games for it later from the context he was typing.

Anyway Atari, Coleco, and Intellivision (2 of whih released consoles this gen if you didn't know.) had some great games.

Montezumas revenge, hard to top this platformer:

Colecovision had Turbo:

Man god times, although I believe what really made Atari so long lasting (longest lasting console and the console that had the longest official game releases) is mostly because of all the original games, and when somebody would "Clone" a game it would actually be a totally different game.

Sad that eventually it didn;t matter which console you played on you could play the others games and vice-versa.

So Soapguy what games do you like to talk about since we are now discussing retro gaming>

I grew up on Atari. The first game I ever saw was pacman back around 1981. I don't remember the names of the systems. I use to play pitfall mario bros. centipied combat I even played E.T.

The NESkilled Atari and I never looked back. I generally don't like playing anything older then the SNES.

The NES didn;t kill Atari, Atari never died they had a new system out competing with it and they had one of the first handhelds made in 89. (Overpowered to the point that they say The GBA couldn't even play Electrocop)

The vast majority of GS users never played one (or the competition) or are 23 minus which means they are too young. You're being nice by saying it's only because people don't have a reason to talk about it.

Not Old Enough? HA! I remember seeing my first coin-op "PONG", for cryin-out-loud. Had a 2600 and played the piss out of it, owned "PacMan" and "ET", "Custer's Revenge", found the first easter egg of all time in "Adventure" without any help (the net didn't exist)... Great game system. I own the DS collections of all those games now, and I love playing them still.

I wasn't around when the 2600 came out, but I do have a lot of respect for it and that era of gaming in general. I currently own an Atari 7800 -- so I can play 2600 and 7800 games. I love popping in Berzerk (2600) or Asteroids (7800) for a quick play from time to time. And nothing beats two-player Atari Pong. Pole Position for the 7800 is another good game.

I said Vast majority. Also DS versions? Beh, go get that Atari Console they just released in 2011, or the other consoles they made last (and this) gen. What Atari made consoles this gen? Yes, they did. I believe the first on released this gen sold over 2-3 million with barely any marketing so they must be doing something right.

Just really quick question, you do realize the 7800 released in the NES era right? But yeah, Bezerk, that's a game that can be remade so the kids would know what they were missing. Unlike games like Roboton which failed harder and harder after every release (The Psx game made me want to kill someone.) Although Robotron and it's many Atari related ports were all genius but the remakes. Just no.

My older sister had an Atari 2600 before we got our NES when I was a kid, but it just didn't hold my attention the way the NES did. I own one now, as well. And I do go back and play it from time to time just to see how video games began and how far we've come. The graphics and sounds for so many games are so primitive, but then at the other end of the spectrum were games that pushed that ancient machine in ways that actually managed to impress you a little. I hated that stiff as heck joystick, though. Whenever I play my Atari 2600, I use Sega Genesis controllers, which are perfectly compatible with joystick-use games without needing any modification of any kind.

My favorite Atari 2600 games are Dig Dug, Mario Bros., Phoenix, Super Breakout, and Defender. With Missile Command being my all-time favorite.

I can acknowledge that the 2600 was a very important player in the history of video games, however it was way before my time and I just never was able to get into it years after it was originally released. The furtherest back I can game if the NES, and even that is pushing it bit for me.

I really like Asteroids, Centipede, Adventure, and Pitfall

but I could care less about the other Spaceship Zoom Pew games.

I'm also under 23 though lol.

I love the NES and SNES though, but designers were able to get more backgrounds other than black by then.

If atari had more color (I know there are a lot of games with color...just not as many as black background games) and if I am more willing to explore then maybe...just maybe.

I do have that Atari collection GBA game where it had like...80 Atari 2600 games or something like that on one GBA cartdridge.

For only having 4 KBs of data to work with though I'm pretty impressed with a lot of the games tbh...Impressed I am but I just don't like them.

First ever game I played was Boxing on the 2600. Followed by Superman and Soccer. I'm sure I played many more games on the console than those but I can't recall their names at the moment.

thats very similar to what I think, but I do enjoy some 2600 like Jungle Hunt, Yar's Revenge, Pitfall 2, Mario Bros etc . the problem isn'r that they aren't fun , its just that I get bored of them quickly , which is understandable since part of the fun is getting alot of points in those games (something I don't care much about)

I can't go that back, the max back I go to is SNES/Genesis era, which is the one I started gaming with, anything before that usually doesn't appeal to me.

I can't comment for others, but I can never find anyone other than my son who will play the system with me (I actually own the original Atari 2600 Jr system). It's funny this is at the top of the forum to me, because I just received my second copy of Solaris for the 2600 sealed (It was my first home console game so I hold a special place for it)

The 1st 2600 I got was after I already had an NES and had some issues with it - I ended up getting rid of it. The 2nd one - a 'heavy sixer', I had all of about a day before the video signal quit working, though I still have it, it's just sitting in the box. Eventually I will probably end up with something like the Flashback 3 that has the 60 games built-in. I was born a couple years after it came out and my first console, as I mentioned, was the NES, so it didn't have quite the impact.

Lol you're missing so many classics it's scary. The 2600 had way to many games for it's own good. Mostly because back then it was a very competitive market.

But for those people who can't go back that far you can always go to the 7800 which came out after the NES.

Plus you can have open-wprld adventure/Rpg games like Midnight Mutants:

That bottom logic makes no sense since especially the first several years it could be argued that the NES was barely a jump at all in anything but in game music. (but that later became a choice other than a problem since Atari continued to do this on their other consoles) Also that's weird, usually 2600's are built like platinum tanks.

Because GameSpot is a technical mess and no one who works for this site give a toss. I've had talks with the mods and the tech page and everyone BUT Jody Robinson about it, and essentially they point to their parent company and say that they have no power to fix anything about the forums. Personally I just think they're lazy, dopish buck-passers around here who're afraid of making waves and getting fired from their sit-around-get-paid-for-doing NOTHING jobs, in the interest of making things better. This site didn't used to be such a technical joke, but it has fallen WAY off in the last two years.

Darkman2007

Wow the glitches are this bad? Wow it got worse. Also that's bull, I remember some years ago some dude was around fixing problems on the site all the time. Lazy IS the correct definition. i see this site exploding at some point.

technology, its fantastic

It went from simple delayed posting to now posts are disappearing, sites and levels aren't updated, forum threads don;t appear after two more or made after (I have tested this.) Some pages won't show posts unless you refresh 3 times in a row, sometimes when you click quick quote it sends you to the login screen so you have to go back and refresh 3 times, some times I see mod tags on people who are not mods, etc. I blame System Wars myself, we need more people here, to talk about 1st-2nd gen systems (Mostly 2nd) and the unknwon to the masses third (7800 although it was profitable but was never actually finished could have put a dent in NES sales.)

All true. And essentially, no one at Gamespot cares, which is a real shame. You would think that they'd tell their owners about it, and say "Hey, we're losing respect out there", but they're content with inserting their thumbs up their butts and sitting down hard on 'em. I have some love for the writers and reviewers, but Jody Robinson is the Community Manager, you would think she could get her ass out of a chair, make a few calls to the head office, and work on making what she's in charge of function properly.

Buuuut...

... SO! About those Atari 2600 games...

I have no trouble going back to playing them because I was a teenager when it came out, but i can see kids or younger folks' aversion to them. To quote GTA Vice City commercials -

"The big green dot chases the little orange dot!"

(kids in background) "Aaaawe-some!"

It was my bad, not Gamespot's. I deleted my post, because I posted something moronic, and realized what I did.

B-buh-buh-but I post moronic stuff all the time...

... Good Gawd, I've totally been avoiding my civic responsabilities!

I tell ya what - If they would fix the hyperlink function, I would cut them some slack. not being able to link for discussion, when talking about things which require proof, or a link to other pertinent information, is important to be able to do. I don't know if people were abusing it, or if it takes a lot of server space, or what... But the fact remains that they just turn their hairy palms upward and say "Sorry, out of my hands".

I think some of my favorite 2600 games were definitely the 3rd party stuff, like Activision, Apollo, and iMagic games... I miss the port of "Venture"... Anyone remember that game?

the 2600 has some very interesting games:

You have 3D gameplay with Aztec Challegge, which has the pyramid come closer:

Beamrider 3D vector Graphics:

3D movment Congo Bongo:

I have already mentioned Montezumas Revnege 400 times.

Then there's this game whoo baby look at thus graphics (speaking from past):

This is a very hard game to find now and it is like the ultimate football game until madden comes out as almost all others play flat in comparison (Even with more buttons!):

There's also this first-person shooter I don't remember the name of (have to find the cart) where it't like a 2 gun FPS with vector lined enemies flying at you like you are in cyber space or something that thing was amazing to play and look at (Still is) although those unstable will have a seizure in 3 seconds after starting.

Also, I believe the 5200 had great games underated, just that some of them had the 2600 joystick in mind for them.

I suggest you guys try the abve games and more, heck you can donwload all 2600 roms in like 5 minutes.

Yes Venutre and Venture II

Definitely games I could play again and again, even in 2012. The thing I like about 2600 games is the play. They weren't all gems, but there were a substantial amount of games which had sublime play which didn't require photo-realistic graphics in order to be engrossing. Games like "Venture" were adventurous, and fun... "Demon Attack!" was an amazing "Space Invaders" clone... "Pitfall" needs no explanation... And games like "Montezuma's Revenge" were exemplary titles for level design and mechanics which still hold up amazingly well to this day.

Montezumas revenge is more playable than 80% of the NES and SNES library. But anyway yes Venture, man the most creative Ips of all time were on the 2600. no one was swcared, and some of the "Clones" were not like today, they were literally different games altogether. Also the longest lasting console and had "Official" games released for it until 1999-2000. Dang In fact, depite what it may seem to people who didn't play games around that time, E.T. actually would have been considered a great game if it was released like 5 years earlier. It failed because of the way the consoles and the competition were acting "Are port must be stronger than that port" "We must makes this game have 35454 more graphical power then the one on the coleco vision." "We are losing, this game is popular, let's release 4 versions of it with slight improvements instead of focusing on one awsome game!" So many games became outdated so fast.

[QUOTE="Another48hours"][QUOTE="Stinger78"]The 1st 2600 I got was after I already had an NES and had some issues with it - I ended up getting rid of it.

That bottom logic makes no sense since especially the first several years it could be argued that the NES was barely a jump at all in anything but in game music. (but that later became a choice other than a problem since Atari continued to do this on their other consoles) Also that's weird, usually 2600's are built like platinum tanks.

The bottom logic - well, if what I said wasn't clear enough - let me rephrase/expand on it. NES was a huge influence for my expectations for console gaming when I got one. Compared to the NES, when I later got an Atari 2600, it didn't impress me as much. I know the 2600 is a great system, I've just had less than ideal circumstances when dealing with them. As far as the other thing you mentioned. If you compare something like Pac-Man or Donkey Kong from Atari 2600 to Pac-Man and Donkey Kong on NES, you'll see that the jump in technology was a lot more than just game music. NES was at least 2 generations newer technology, as it was comparable to the 7800 at least.

That's not a fair comparison because those ports were done yearslater when gaming companies didn't need to shell out a original game in 2 weeks, it would even look better on the 600 later on. That comparison is just as unfair when GS was talking about the leap from the 2600 to the Nes comparing SMB 3 and Pitfall that's plain BS. It really was just the music, especially at first.

Also, the 7800 can only be compared to the Nes becaue first it wasn;t finished and they had nor even attempted to gain support. Technically the 7800 wins unfavorably.

Heck yes, some of my favourites were Moon Patrol,, Kangaroo, Pitfall and Jungle Hunt. Oh Kung Fu! California games was good too. I remember even managing to beat E.T. as a kid  (man that game sucked obviously)

Oh and I forgot Joust! LOVED JOUST!
