Well so far this gen I have enjoyed Mass effect and Lost odyssey off the top of my head, and LBP looks intruiging. Also gears was a new IP this gen as was bioshock, so there have been some new IP's (I know there are more but no time to look now sorry).

Dead Space, Last Remnant, Bioshock, Little Big Planet, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Lost Odysee, Fracture, Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Planet, Overlord, Dead Rising, Kayne & Lynch, Army of Two.

All of them examples of new IPs that have been created THIS generation.

And don't forget games like Resistence, Uncharted, Rock Band... other "this gen" IPs that are already successful enough to see sequels.

To say that there aren't original IPs around is rather blind.

There are tons of new IPs around, they just never get as much attention as the huge franchised games, so you don't hear about them as much.

Personally, most of the games I'm looking forward to are new IPs...

I agree with some of the ones already listed being decent releases. But what is there to look forward to besides the two unreleased titles I listed?

Well to be fair we ARE in that 4-6 month period where there will be very little info released about the new games appearing for next holiday season. Nothing really new will be revealed regarding new games till the month around E3. All we are gonna see is just tidbits of information.

Don't worry, there WILL be new IPs, but you actually have to go out and buy them - or else developers and publishers will think gamers care about nothing but sequels, and that what we'll get.

Also don't forget about EA's new "Dante's Inferno", its being developed by the studio behind Dead Space, so it may actually be something more than a God of War clone. I guess we'll see.

In the midst of all the sequels every year, there are always new IPs that come out. The main problem is that the good ones get overshadowed by the AAA titles. It happened to Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts last gen. Some of my favorite gems from this gen are Little Big Planet, Mass Effect and Mirrors Edge. As far as some new IPs to look forward to...a couple of things come to mind. Infamous(360/PS3), The Conduit(Wii), Scribblenauts(DS), and Alpha Protocol(360/PS3). More new IPs will be announced as we get into next year

This man speaks the truth. Not mention games like Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, No more Heroes, Condemned (which this gen already got a sequel) Heavenly Sword etc. This gen is FULL of new IPs with plenty more coming out that look great if you bother to look, i mean Dark Void anyone?

If you're not seeing new IP's then frankly it's your own fault. There's hardly a shortage of them, though admittedly they do tend to get overshadowed by the big name sequels. BUt this year saw plenty of new big IPs. No More Heroes, Mirror's Edge, Left For Dead, Dead Space, LBP, and plenty of others that have already been mentioned.

2009 looks like a fine start as well. Keep in mind, new IP's typically don't get years of hype like RE5 since there's nothing to build it on so there will be many to come that just haven't been announced. For the Wii alone there will be Little Kings Story, Deadly Creatures, Mad World, and the Conduit and that's all just in Q1.

Well it looks like I was beaten to it by others who posted the TONS of new IP's out there but they are definately out there and the large majority of them have received a good deal of focus and coverage as well.

If someone had said "Hey guys, list all the new IPs this gen", the thread would have died a lonely death. But when it's all about proving somebody wrong, people collaborate towards the common goal of laying the smackdown on someone in a forum. You have to love human nature.

Indeed. The past year has seen some rather outstanding new IP's, specifically Dead Space, LBP and Mass Effect, all of which stand to spawn their own sequels. I wouldn't really include BioShock as it is pretty much the spiritual successor of SystemShock. I just think right now we're hitting kind of a slow spot. We'll certainly see some great new IP's in the future.

Clearly not all of those titles listed are excellent games, but a good majority are, so it's not like there aren't any new good IPs either, so don't bother countering with that statement, thank you.

Coming from a guy who pissed all over Mirrors Edge, your complaints come off as pretty much ridiculous.

People like you talk often of innovation but when a game comes out that you can't wrap your head around, you dismiss it outright.

As for original IP's, they are plentiful. Dead Space is amazning, LBP is gold, Uncharted was a solid upstart, Left 4 Dead is polished and incredibly well made, No More Heroes was fun and quirky, ...

What was your point again?

The thing with new IPs this gen is that they are over-shadowed by sequels. Yes there are a lot if new IPs but they don't get that much attention/hype than sequels until it's released and usually it fails on sales.

No one really talked about Resistance, Uncharted, and Assassin's Creed until it came out. The only new IP I could think that got very hyped is LBP. For upcoming new IPs, only White Knight Chronicles and Heavy Rain are getting hyped. Today, gamers want to see/play the new IP first before they talk about it.

I don't know what planet you were on for the past few years, but Resistance, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead and Assassin's Creed were all hyped through the roof on Gamespot and other websites. You wanna see hype? Go to System Wars forum.

OP, the only reason you don't see new IPs is because you have your eyes closed. Put a little more emphasis on playing and appreciating great games, and less on waxing philosphical on an internet forum for the sake of trying to be different, and you'll enjoy the hobby a whole lot more.

what the original poster (OP?) probably meant was that there were no new IPs that he wanted to play...or he was just a bit jaded or something. anyway, you guys scared him off. as proven, there are new game titles this generation, and they seem to be coming out quicker than the classic gaming franchises..

sequels to games of last generation (or previous generations) are taking/have taken a long time to make this generation (SF4, RE5, TKN6, FFXIII, KZII, MGS4, plus any new zelda/mario game). this is in contrast to sequels from games from this generation, like GOW2 and resistance 2.

sequels to classic franchise games are coming at a price though. heavy investment, top-tier talent and having to creates lots of 'cash-cows'. final fantasy is no longer a game, its a media franchise; a banner under which SE can make lots of investment profit.

miyamoto said in an interview recently that zelda takes a long time to make and presumably a lot of that time is spent thinking of new ideas. while wii music (new IP) was made relatively quickly - and probably at less expense too. so perhaps we are seeing new franchise-building as the technology offers more possibilities and the designers move on or tackle a different type of game and a different audience.

world of goo! braid! LBP! (he's probably just jaded or bored)
