A game that pretty much set the pavement for later fighting games, including early 3D, to start grwoing in popularity. Pit-fighter was a unique fither. With then impressive graphics and animations for its time using the powerful Atari G1 arcade hardware. 3 character fighting, tons of special moves, Z axis movement, interruptions from NPC's during battle, being able to use items on the field to your advantage. So many things that would influence many other games. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnFU-BXda2A The game was a big name, but over time it has slowly been forgotten. Outside of certain PC versions and the Arcade version a lot of other ports are quite bad. but I notice that people are slowly going back and playing this template for the future do to emulation and interest in older computers. Does anybody remember playing it? I was blown away at the then clarity of the graphics, the number of things you can do, the voices, the moves, and the 3 player mayhem!!!

Played the arcade version on PS2 and... it sucks. I tried playing it, but went back to Mortal Kombat on the same Midway Arcade Treasures disc.

Corny game but one of the first fighting games using digitized sprites (later made popular by MK) and blood.

You could also throw stuff and move everywhere if I remember correctly.

Yie Ar Kung Fu or Karate Champ are more the 'father of modern fighting games', rather than Pit Fighter, for being early 1-on-1 fighting games. Controls/playability is a HUGE factor in having fun with a game, and from everything I've seen of Pit FIghter, that was a major issue.

I'll never forget my cousin and I renting the Super Nintendo system and Street Fighter II on a weekly basis to get our fix and one week it was out before we could snag it so we rented Pit Fighter for my Genesis. Uhhh yea, was not the same!

Was a fun game, not as good as C2 or anything, but it was a fun games. People should go back and play it. It introduced permanent mechanics that would be used in all 3D and 2D fighters.

Nope, those are not the father of modern games, Pitfighter introduced mechanics like movement gird with Z-axis, Tri+ combos, and weapon use among others that would be used in almost the same way in MOST 2D and 3D games. Edit: But hey, few outside of those who played it while it was popular, have played it, so I should not expect people to give any credit to Pit Fighter.

How would you define a "modern" fighting game?

Would you say that Battletank is the father of FPS games? No. you would give that to some around Wolfenstein 3d. Ideas are Ideas. The execution that influences numerous games is what you can really call a father. Which is Pit-Fighter. poor soul. Edit: I think it's called Battle Tank, it had many different names.

That's the first time I've heard anyone call Pit-Fighter "the father of modern fighting games"... but to each his own, I guess?

Well what it did is in every fighting game, and it did it differently than the two games Yie kung fu and Karate Champ. Think of them as Inspirations. but if you still don't i suppose I can't sway you. I mean, not many people remember ol' poor Pit-Fighter. God bless it's soul. Edit: But to be clear, I don't think it's that good of a game. It's decent, but with G.O.A.T's like C2 it's no where near the top of fighting game lists.

Pit Fighter's gameplay appears to be similar to earlier brawling-type fighters like Violence Fight and Street Smart...

I think where Pit Fighter's originality really lies, though, is in the live-action digitized sprite graphics, which was later popularized by Mortal Kombat... So you could say Pit Fighter influenced the Mortal Kombat school of fighting games?

Yes and no. While Pit-Fighter did have a few similar Brawler mechanics, it did try to do it's own thing (you can see this and feel this instantly while playing the game.) and a lot of what it did or tried to do (but had bad controls for) would be used in all Fighting games. Pit-Fighter is barely credited for anything. Of course, it's not C2 or anything.

Well, I haven't played either Pit Fighter, Violence Fight, or Street Smart... so I can't really say how similar or different they really are...

However, one thing I am sure about is that Pit Fighter does at least deserve some cred for the realistic digital sprite graphical style that was later used in Mortal Kombat and its clones.

And by the way, what do you mean by C2?
