Seriously, it seems the majority of games i've been playing for the last two years have been open world with rpg elements. All of the good single player and multiplayer games have been far and few in between. I understand they are fun and add replayability but sometimes all I want is a nice story with a linear path to follow.

I agree with what you said about a nice story with a liner path i'm getting a bit sick of all these massive open world games with 500 side missions with limited variety.

I would love a game like the last of us a great story with a liner path but different choices on how to approach each situation.

@roleplaygaming: I rarely enjoy Open World games, because they don't have level design built around taking advantage of the in-game mechanics as well as smaller maps built for multiple scenarios.

I prefer games more focused on control, and depth. Than open fields holding down the run button.

It's why Nioh is a treat for me this year, has a tight focus on what Team Ninja wanted it to be. And Open World games rarely have that_

Open world RPG yeah a lot ... they are too shallow with too much filler boring stuff and a very empty world...

But Final Fantasy XV and Horizon are really great to me. They felt alive and there is enough structure to make the story worthwhile.

I can't stand what EA, Activision or Bethesda pass as Open World with RPG elements...

No I'm not. I'm tired of low quality rpg wannabes. A game like Witcher 3 or FFXV i'd enjoy anytime, and to be honest i want more games like them. Open world rpg is the recipe for success, if the developers actually want to develop a game and not a cashgrab.

Depends what you enjoy. But both games you mention have poor level design and input lag. Calling more linear experiences "low quality" is laughable. Linear games have a tighter focus on gameplay_

It's the open world aspect that I dislike it's why I couldnt get into red dead redemption. My type of rpg is the Tales series at most the game can 60 or so hours rather than hundreds. I get my fill without feeling burnt out before the game's end

@RSM-HQ Thats the thing. Its like all they care about is how big they can make the world.

@clefdefa hit it on the head. Most, not all, lack the content needed to be good

@roleplaygaming: It's not that Open World games can never be good, but it's rarely achieved, and has caused many games to be underwhelming and mediocre one way or another. While smaller maps have more refined focus for the developer to take advantage with.

Did you ever play Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen? It's a great example of Linear Design versus Open world. Because the game has both. Best part of DD:DA is Bitterblack Isles and the Everfall. The Open world part (Gran Soren) was terrible, such a waste of space and had no real relevance to the mechanics given to the player.

In a sequel they should ditch the Open world entirely and make the areas like Bitterblack Isles. The level design was some of the best in any RPG I've ever played. I must have killed Death and Final Form Daimon 100 times haha_

I'm definitely sick of all the open world games in general... developers seem to think that all games have to be open world with a billion things to do in it. Linearity isn't a bad thing... games like Mafia 3 & Mass Effect Andromeda would be better games if they were more linear and cut out a lot of the open world filler.

I do love a good open world game from time to time but I don't rely on them I like to balance things out a bit and play a variety of games.

Saying "are you tired of all the rpg games" is not only a pretty silly question, it's worded pretty silly as well. RPG = Role Play Games, RPG Games = Role Play Games Games.

Regarding the question and why it's silly, well rpg is a disgustingly large scope. The RPG games you've listed are quite different to other ones. Even if you include more traditional rpg like final fantasy 15, witcher 3, World of Final Fantasy, and Shadowrun: Dragonfall, you have 4 very distinct different experiences between them.

I am wanting some more linear games but I don't want a sudden shift, I still want some more open world games or hub world games like yakuza 0.

ff15 was pretty good, witcher 3 had great side missions and stuff, world of final fantasy was pretty good (fairly linear), and Shadowrun: Dragonfall is good since it's a hub world with instanced locations like yakuza 0 and it delves A LOT into actual tabletop rpg stuff.

But yeah, I love rpg and I've been getting more into them, I'd prefer less games that have just soft elements of rpg thrown in for a checklist of things to add.

@roleplaygaming:

I'd rather an RPG along the lines of Ultima series. Maybe 7. Not these adventure games with a few elements.

I thought Divinity was it but it's combat is frustrating.

Yes, I like linear games a lot.

@roleplaygaming:

I dunno, I kinda like the idea of leveling up characters but I do agree that the open world idea is getting out of hand. I'm ok with open world in games like Grand Theft Auto, superhero games, rpg's like Elder Scrolls, and racing games but not for EVERYTHING else.

To me, open world killed the experience of playing Metal Gear Solid 5. It has all the gameplay elements we always dreamed of too so that really made matters more devastating. Thanks to that, I was left wandering around for hours collecting soldiers with very little story to make sense of it. I really wanted to love Metal Gear Solid 5 but I just couldn't with the direction it went. To me, Metal Gear Solid is best in smaller controlled environments with a heavy narrative to help you navigate through it. MGS5 was just a mess of endless farming and listening to boring audio tapes.

Since the game mechanics are all about shooting and aiming with the weapons, now that the dual analog control scheme has been mastered, it makes more sense to invest on character AI with levels that it can react to. However, this presents a problem to us, which is the fact that, whenever they want to be more inventive with the levels, they have to rely on scripted events in an open world. Multiplayer is the way to go for level design without constraints, because you're controlling the character and figuring it out as you go, but don't expect the stories in single player to be any less linear. Portal 1 & 2 are obviously the outliers.

Most Open World Games I've played are graphical marvels, unfortunately it's obvious that is where most of the development time and money has been spent in detriment to the story-line and other role-playing aspects.

I'd prefer that the myriad of side quests be deleted completely and a linear main story-line be fleshed out, with decision forks at various points to add replayability.

If a game is going to have team mates, let me manage their arms and gear, it's certainly a role playing aspect I miss.

Andromeda is the perfect example of linear progression gone awry, after 14 hours in my initial play-through I still had no idea of my objective.

Most Role Players like to become immersed with their characters, personally I can't identify with something that's fug ugly, make character creation a priority.

If relationships are to be entwined into a game, make them more spontaneous, so you don't have to wait until X to happen in game before you can have a further conversation. And after a relationship is formed, a little more effort into the follow up relationship/conversations.

I've noticed a marked improvement in team mate/squad mate banter in recent games.

Anyway that's my two-bobs worth.

Not really. I love RPGs but what I dislike most are worlds that are too open. Most are just barren wastelands that act as padding and chock full of collectables that I couldn't give a shit about. I also do not like repetitive backgrounds and scenery; I expect the average RPG to be about 50 hours - imagine how dull it'd be if you kept seeing similar backgrounds.

I just avoid the bad ones. I'm far more tired of all the FPS games that come out each year since a good one of those is even rarer.

It's funny, back in the SNES days, I remember saying "I wish every game had RPG elements in it". Well, it turns out I got my wish, however, it has not worked out like I thought. Almost all RPGs are watered down for the lowest common denominator.

Sometimes streamlining can be beneficial, other times, it saps away core elements of what made those games good.

I'm sick of every game using RPG elements when it's clear that those elements hurt the game by holding back crucial abilities or upgrades that make the game fun or played as intended.

It seems there's some sort of competition going on now between developers. "Our world is so huge it takes 10,000 hours to complete. And ours takes 20,000! Oh, yeah? We'll release 30 DLC which will take additional 50,000 hours to complete!" Have they gone mad? Like they want you to pack your bags and move into their game world permanently. A game should tell a story. Every story has an end. These games look more like a Brazilian soap-opera. I like a good linear story and I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

yeah, im a little tired of it.

Ive always preferred story focused linear games with a beginning, middle and end. I dont mind them with open world elements, and i dont mind there being more than 1 path to the objective, or choices along the way.

Thats not to say that I dont like open world games. I like Skyrim, and the Witcher 3, as much as the next person. But what I liked about those games is that they were filled with individual story lines. What I dont like about many open world RPGs is that they are massive worlds but are quite empty, apart from fetch quests, or seek and kill quests, thus we are left with a very shallow world that doesnt seem believable or real.

Eh, it might be another mmorpg to most of you but there's this mmorpg (not released yet) which promises to be different *cough cough like so many others cough cough* and from what I've read about it seems kind of nice.

Why do I say that? As far as I understood it's completely player driven, quests and all the other npc jobs (and I think city making too?) included. Even map making o3o

I thought their idea of being a part of the story of the world or the history (characters age and die <3) might be appealing to some of you.

Edit: forgot to mention the name: Chronicles of Elyria
