I always thought it was really cool to have the official strategy guide to a game growing up, especially if it was an RPG or adventure game. Beyond helping you figure out how to beat the game and do side missions, and that sort of stuff, they were usually filled with cool screens of the game, or even special artwork. One thing that I have been doing for about the past year is buying strategy guides for old games when I can find them for cheap. About 2-months ago I found a ton of old PS1 RPG guides at a thrift store for about a buck each, and looking through them really made me realize how awesome old video game guides are. Prior to this, I had several lying around (mostly final fantasy, Zelda and Pokemon guides), but I've recently been keeping my eyes out for more awesome players guides.

So does anyone else on here collect players guides for retro games? What are your favorites or what are some guides that you are looking for?

I have boxes full of them since I always figured that if I waited long enough I could probably sell them for decent prices later. When i was growing up playing Adventure or Rpgs on the Intell or the 2600, old computers etc. Almost at least 87% of the time REQUIRED you to either be really really patient in figuring them out or having a strategy guide of somesort, whether it was made by someoneelse or official. Around 4th gen toward the CDi launch I had been buying up gaming guides for the games that had them, even for games I did not have (if they were at least a tad popular.) Soon I will be opening a gaming store website, where I will seel such things and games at affordable prices.

Yes I do, it just depends if I liked the game that's all even though... I recently sold a lot of them at a garage sale I had with the significant other :P for like 50 cents a piece, I did keep some of the good ones though :) Love the Pokemon guides, very handy to have a nice map and a level chart that shows what move the Pokemon will learn at the EXACT level and the other guides I have are mostly used for reference, like the Metal Gear Solid ones, that talk about the weapons, rations, and other items being used in the game, then it has the little section of Secrets, which I use to see if I missed any funny stuff like the Pantless Marine in Hold 1 :P didn't see that my first time around when I first played Metal Gear Solid 2, then the guide mentions a secret way to bypass all the Holds and you come out right in Hold 3, another thing I found on my 2nd playthrough. I have the GTA ones too, which are used for maps and hidden packages or other collectables.

I was when I was younger. At one point I had so much clutter that I threw out all the mags I had. In the past the game guides were of higher quality, I think. I had the ones from most of my favorite games, and the fighting games I played the most. I remember the killer instinct guides being really great--they had all the moves, explained combo theory(ki2), and had a bunch of the gc art for the game.

Depends. I buy guides for series that I am fond with. Most Zelda and Resident Evil games for instance.

I've been trying to track down the Metal Gear Solid Perfect Guide by Versus Books, but they're usually in poor condition and without the poster. However, I do have the RE2 and RE3 Perfect Guides, and they're a joy to read anytime.

I used to have 90+ strategy guides, from the earliest days of Prima and Nintendo Power, til the evil relatives tossed most of em. Now I only have a few recent hardback ones. =(

I have the Prima OoT N64 guide from back when it first released. Bought it because I never played a Zelda before then and friends kept telling me I'd be lost without it. It really did help. I think it's lost or in storage now.

I love how a lot of the newer guides are starting to come in hardcover. They are way more durable than the paperbacks. Even though they've been replaced, I have a Brady Games FF7 and FF8 guide that are both totally trashed, covers falling off and the binding is being held together by tape. Never abused them, they've just got a ton of use over the years.
