Anyone else notice that ads for WoW have recently gone through the roof?

I swear I can't visit the majority of the websites I go to without seeing an advertisemtn for WoW. Not only that, but I see the commericials they make on TV, as well as the Chuck Norris one on Xbox Live even.

In the 7 years WoW has been out, I don't think I've ever seen so much advertising for it.

Player population is probably starting to fall, I guess.

WOW has been king for so long. It can't be far off from being de-crowned.

By whom? I don't know. Haven't been following the MMO scene for a while now.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is the game that many people think will possibly de-throne WoW, or at least draw a lot of it's population away. Guild Wars 2 is another game that many consider to be a legitimate contender.

I don't think it's a coincidence either that the huge increase in advertising for WoW has started around the same time TOR will be released.

They're losing player population so no surprise. Not to mention the ads are such a rip-off: Patch 4.3: Free to Play! Up to seven days. Free to Play! Up to level 20. :x

I mean seriously, all I see on the WoW ads is that it's free to play and they barely mention that it's only for a short period. Once the Pandarians come I'm sure WoW will up and die off leaving behind a cloud of glittering $#!+. I thought it was good at one time...then they just kept nailing in their coffin. Idiots.

WoW has been king for so long, it's only a matter of time before it becomes dethroned. People who have been playing WoW for years have become bored, and whenever new content is released they blow through it within a matter of days. A person can only play a game for so long before they want something new.

I think Star Wars: The Old Republic could challenge WoW for the top MMO spot. It's made by Bioware, and of course the Star Wars name is huge. A lot of potential, as long as EA and Bioware don't blow it.

The free trials are actually for an unlimited time now, but yeah, it's only to Level 20.

I agree though. WoW is nowhere close to the amazing game it once was. The community seems way worse than it has ever been, the LFG/LFR tools make people just /afk in SW/Org all the time, World PvP is damn near dead on most servers, PvP in general is not very good in it's current state, it's way too simple and fast to get to Level 58, and much more. It sucks because I used to love the game, but I just can't seem to get into it anymore.

I really hope it does de-throne WoW. Like you said, it's been at the top for so long, and it can only do so much more.

I noticed it happening before that though. I think the holiday sales are just a part of it too. They know it's hard for people to resist buying the games for that cheap. No harm to them either, as they are already filthy rich as it is.

It's just Blizzards way to try and stop the flow of players jumping the ship. Also they'd rather not see TOR be successful whether or not they get any of their ex-players back. Yeah and Chuck Norris in those ads is just stupid, the jokes got so boring so fast and sooooo overused it is more of a turn-off to get back into the damn game as it reminds me what the chat channels are always filled with.

Honestly, that Chuck Norris ad is way outdated if anything. They should of made it ages ago when Chuck Norris jokes were still relevant and Barrens chat was constantly spammed with stuff like that. I don't think chat channels are really like that too much anymore when leveling, since barely anyone seems to be in the same area as you in the first place.

WoW is ready to be dethroned or at least take a serious dent in population, it's just blizzard's way to slow it

WoW still has more players than SWTOR will in it's entire lifetime. The only thing that can dethrone WoW at this point is Titan.

That's a big assumption. It's an even bigger assumption that only Blizzards next game will top WoW, when in fact follow up MMO titles by a company have never topped the first entry. If history tells us anything, it's that Titan won't come close to WoW's numbers.

But will ToR dethrone WoW? No, but 2 million people signed up for the beta. So that's a fair guess as to how many copies they are going to sell initially. Estimations are they will have 3 million consistent subscribers over the first year. It's also a fair guess that many of thoes will be WoW players.

That may not sound like much next to WoW's 10 million. But seeing that since Rift came out WoW's player base has dropped 10%. It's not just because of Rift but it's a contributing factor. If a game like Rift can do that, how big of a drop in WoW's population do you think ToR is going to cause?

WoW isn't losing subscriptions to other games. They're losing subscriptions because their own game got worse.

Bound to happen as more and more staff start to get shifted over to new projects.

They have a christmas sale on and ToR marks the begining of hard times for all current mmos. 2012 is filled with high quality mmos so its natural that Blizzard is pushing WoW to a new audience through tv ads.

WoW just feels too outdated at this point. Even the commercial. I saw the Chuck Norris commercial the other day on TV and I just sighted. I just felt completely uninterested in it, the Chuck Norris stuff has been so overused on the internet I just can't even bother with him any longer.

Lmao. It isn't a coincidence that ads are popping up like crazy. It isn't going to stop The Old Republic though. It's going to be huge. Everyone I came across in the beta weekends that I've played, loved it. People will stick around and sub for a while.

But if I had to pick only one MMO, it would be Guild Wars 2. I will most likely drop TOR for Guild Wars 2 even though GW2 has no sub. Not enough time for two MMO's unfortunately.

Wii-U4Fun

WoW is far from being decrowned trust me, it has a 10 million subscribers and in second place there is Rift with 1-2 million subscribers-

A lot of MMOs have declared themselves the 'WoW killer' including Rift.. let's see how SW:TOR behaves.

Seriously though. Rift had no chance. TOR at least has some weight but I doubt it will take down WoW. Not a chance. WoW will continue to have millions of subs. No doubt.

Y U DO THAT?

On a more serious note, propably the casuals got bored of the same thing all the time and jumped into another fad. Hopefully, this will be the begining of the end for the carebear, noob-friendly theme-park (M)MORPGs.

Of course it is. WoW is approved by Chuck Norris.
