Does anyone else sense a growing problem with companies shutting down they servers for older games before the community gets tired of playing them? EA has shut down quite a few server farms for games which were still popular. I know they just want to make money, but shouldn't they be held to a higher standard for support of legacy customers? What do you think?

Amplitude andTime Splitters: Future Perfect are two examples I've run into myself. But there are many others. EA shut down the on-line servers for alot of games this Summer.

I can't really fault a company for shutting down a server for a game that's several years old. They've made all the money they're going to make off that game, and it costs money to keep those servers up, so it cuts into the resources for other games. I'm surprised those servers were still up to begin with.

I doubt it will be problem in the future.

Games these days are starting to come out with P2P option, so even if servers go down you will be able to play.

People can still play Starcraft on Battlenet so I don't expect such thing will be a problem.

Battle.Net is just a matchmaking service and therefore is still P2P.

That's exactly my point.

As long as games come out with P2P option, even if server goes down it won't be a problem.

Oh I thought you were trying to say that Battle.Net was an example of a publisher still hosting an old game. My mistake.

Still, shouldn't something be in place for people who still enjoy these games? After all, they did pay for the game. To not allow them to use a feature of the game seems a bit wrong.

They should its just that the only real alternative is to let players host thier own servers, which is difficult to do for console games. Its not impossible to do, its just that there are alot of things that have to be ironed out.

It's tough to justify keeping the resources open for the older games when you have these money making games being developed that will need more serves. But I wish they kept the older games accessible. It is fun to revisit your old characters.
