I started playing Shenmue on my dreamcast. I havent actually played then game in almost 10 years, and I must say, this game didnt really age for me. I am not sure whether it is the story, or gameplay or just something about the game, don't get me wrong their are lots of older games I love that time will never kill, like Castlevania (NES) Super Mario Bros 3, and Shadow of the Colossus. But with Shenmue, i am thinking I like the game better now then I did when I was younger. Lol either way, any dreamcast owners out there or anyone that has this game definatly play through it again. It is super good

Nice one.. I am actually replaying through it now and apart from the controls feeling a bit archaic nowadays I love it just as much nowadays as I did when it first launched. Im on disc 3 now and will be moving onto Shenmue 2 as soon as I finish. Shenmue will always be one of my favourite games ever made.

While I personally prefer Shenmue 2 (more to do , better story, less boring things, better visuals) , Shenmue is still very good, though admittedly the first disc is a bit of a chore.

I always preferred the first one.. It might have more to do with the impact it made on me at the time I played it though. Though I must admit the second has such a great amount of stuff to do and the location is amazing. Maybe after all these years since I last played it i will enjoy it more than I did the first time i played through it. My damn Dreamcast is so loud I have to turn my tv up just so I dont get annoyed by the damn noise it makes :P

Good games remain good. Even if better games come out.

I understand Shenmue had some incredible production values. But do that many people actually find it to be a fun game? All it is is talking, talking, talking, and more talking. And even then, you can only get so much talking done before the day runs out. It seems like you were always playing beat the clock in that game to get your daily activities done before the sun went down. And why does it take 10 freaking minutes to decide what kind of sushi Ryo wants to eat? "Hmmm" The funnest part of that game for me was going to the arcade in town, lol. Once you finally get to a fight, it's over within a minute and then you don't get another one for like 2 hours or more.

out of curiosity, did you finish the game? the first disc is certainly a bit of a chore, but the later parts of the game are alot more interesting. also did you play Shenmue 2 ? its basically Shenmue with less boring stuff and a better story and visuals.

These were my sentiments as I read your post. Shenmue 2 gets rid of the beat the clock in alot of ways and it allows u to accelerate the clock. Story is still good and there are more things to do. Great great game.

I second this. Though I prefer 2, both games were quite amazing and have stood the test of time for me. I could play them over and over and never get bored.

it didn't just stand the test of time. in hindsight now, it's even better because many games of today have borrowed elements of shenmue but none have gotten it down so well as this game. the unique but massive world has yet to be duplicated by any other game. shenmue 2 more so.

I was just playing it the other day and I felt the same way. Graphically the models are so detailed that I was actually still impressed with how many of the characters look. The big drawback for me was the voice acting, but I kind of find Ryo's blunt and polite voice kinda charming so it isn't to distracting. But yeah Shenmue is still a fantastic game.

its lucky Shenmue 2 on the Dreamcast had the Japanese voice acting with English subtitles. much better then the somewhat wooden English voice acting in Shenmue 1 and Xbox Shenmue 2.

was it just me or did Shenmu 2's voice acting different from Shenmu 1? I don't know why, but I liked Shenmu 1's dubbed voice acting (As far as dub voice acting goes at least) but I didn't like Shenmu 2's.

I haven't played Shenmue, but the second one was pretty good. I first played it when I had a 360, so it was a while since it came out.

I prefer Shenmue 2, but this is still one of my all time favourite games. I agree with Darkman about disc one feeling like a chore and the game getting better on the second disc; a lot more action occurs the further you get into the game.

Good games remain good. Even if better games come out.

nameless12345
While I agree that Shenmue has aged well, aren't you completely contradicting yourself? Here in this thread you stated that you feel good games remain good, but only about ten days ago in another recent thread you made a post stating that many older games arent that good anymore? Contradicting much? Here's the post you made: "Because it redefined the fantasy action-adventure genre and because it was the first Zelda in 3D. There was nothing that could come close to it when it came out. Of course today it's not that good anymore (which goes for pretty much any game btw) but back then it made a great impression on the gaming crowd and is justly considered a classic."

I enjoyed Shenmue. The graphics were great, the story was pretty good, and you get play classic Sega arcade games like Space Harrier and Hang-On. I really liked the use of QTE in there too. I'll tell you what: if I still had a Dreamcast and Shenmue I would definitely play it.

the main advantage of owning the DC version is the much better voice acting, along with the fact that you can use your save from Shenmue 1 to transfer the items and skills you got into Shenmue 2.

Shenmue is awesome, but it controlled pretty bad back in the day, and I'm sure it controls even worse now.

Agreed. Almost like a prolonged tutorial with the first disc. Still a great game to me though!

Most, if not all games that started in the 6th generation have stood the test of time, and will most likely *forever* stand the test of time because that's the generation were 3D visuals reached to the sky.

I see incredibly improvements in this current generation, but certainly not as dramatic as the difference between a PS1 game and a PS2 game.

the biggest change was between the 4th and 5th gen imo , now its just building on what was done 10 years ago , as opposed as a totally new way to play games.

I personally feel the biggest jump was from launch SNES games like SMW to launch N64 games like SM64. SNES and MD could already do 3D graphics (if simplistic) with the aid of chips and 32X could already do textured 3D graphics. Of course the difference between Super FX and SVP enhanced SNES and MD games and 32X compared to Saturn and PS1 was still big but it didn't wow me as much as the jump from SNES (and MD) to N64. Then again comparing a later NES game like SMB.3 to a later SNES game like DKC was also dramatic. But that was just a cosmetic jump and same goes for the 6th gen imo. A game like SM64 simply couldn't be done on the SNES or MD (or even 32X).

exactly or as I always put it. from n64/psx/saturn to dreamcast. I couldn't believe my eyes back then. when I show some of my friends certain dreamcast games like dead or alive 2 they still can't believe how good it looks

Well truth be told I wasn't that impressed by N64. I was actually most impressed by Quake 3 on the PC. That looked amazingly good when it came out. Some later PC games like Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto also wowed me.

I was also amazed by how detailed faces Shenmue had and of course the cars in GT3.

But if I had to pick a N64 game that really wowed me that would be Donkey Kong 64.
