The nature of WRPGs doesn't allow for direct sequels thanks to the many decisions that change the world, making the sequel highly incosistent.
Not creating a direct sequel allows for predetermined events that allow for a sequel in the same universe some time later.

This could easily be rectified by having the character answer questions about what happened at the end of the other game. Work the questions in as part of the game or do them before the character starts playing.
The Star Wars IP is owned by George Lucas (and subsequently game publisher Lucas Arts). I don't think Bioware has to make the third one in order for it to be good, just as long as it's made by a reputable western rpg developer. Hell, KOTOR 2 would have been a ton better if Lucas Arts didn't rush Obsidian to the christmas deadline (which is why the game was buggy and under-developed). I'm 90% positive a third KOTOR game will be made at some point, but I'm also 99% positive that Bioware won't be the developer.
Personally I liked The Exile more than Revan, but that's just me! I just thought her story was more interesting than Revan's. (Officially Revan was a guy and The Exile a girl, both did the good side endings... officially!)
It'd be a bit hard to do a followup playing as either though. Not only are both characters incredibly powerful by the end, but the Star Wars mythos just isn't suited to that kind of super powerful adventure. Sure, Obsidian did a great job with The Mask of the Betrayer expansion where you're so powerful at the end you're waging war against the celestial realms... but that's D&D where adventurers ruitinely become gods and most kingdoms face annihilation on a daily basis from various forgotten ancient evils! Star Wars doesn't quite work that way!
Most likely when the inevitable Kotor 3 rolls around it'll be as yet another jedi who follows in the footsteps of Revan and Exile, maybe trying to figure out what happened to them both? Could be interesting. And if they get Obsidian to do it again, please Lucasarts, please, let them finish it this time instead of rushing for a christmas release. That was so lame of you!
The problem I have with KOTOR is that having the fun powers, as in the Sith powers, is punitive in terms of not being able to get the good ending. It would be great if they would detach the powers with the endings.
I don't mind a sequel but having the series change hands once again would not be a good idea but I'm not sure if Obsidian can deliver a great product, maybe if they have more time to work on KOTOR II it might have been better, on the other hand it's really about polishing up what you have for release, which Obsidian didn't exactly do a great job at.

When I was playing Mass Effect last night I actually thought it would be cool to remake the first KOTOR of course add new characters and new side questsand addmore main missions/quests. Just thought the saber action and of course the graphics of Mass Effect would look great. Even though I know what happens and all that. Id still buy it.
But yeah agreed would be nice to have a decent sequal involving Revan and the gang. Well maybe in the future fingers crossed.
I would have been happy if KOTOR 2 was a finished product as opposed to what they released. But then again, that wasn't Bioware.
But I think many of us would like sequels that maintain the same characters or universe that were in the original. You invest all that time getting to know the various characters and settings and then it's over. It would be nice to have another game to continue that on.
I really didn't mind people sticking up for Obsidian before.... yes they were rushed but they weren't rushed with Neverwinter Nights 2 and it shares a lot of bugs that KOTOR !! had (except for those strange cut scenes that made no sense)
I just think Obsidian is a sloppy developer that relies on patches to clean up their products. Bioware might put out games with bugs but Obsidian makes them look like Nintendo when it comes to quality, solid titles.
Anyways I'm more than happy with the way Mass Effect is headed... wanting a KOTOR III just because is pointless, it's obvious the games won't be the same quality of KOTOR 1 or Mass Effect so why wish for an inferior game just for the name and the setting?

It's called evolution and Bioware is always at the forefront. Mass Effect is a trilogy, do you think they're going to let people play through the first game, do what ever they want and then reset all the really bad or really good things just so they can have a set story for the sequel?
The beginning character customization in Mass Effect actually tweaks and changes the story off of the information you picked and i would think they'd use this in the sequels also to make a cohesive world. technology is grand

The Witcher does too and there's a lot less bugs
Didn't they use a BioWare engine for NWN2? I bet that might have had something to do with it. :P
At least Team Gizka are going to succeed where Obsidian failed.foxhound_fox
I'd blame Lucas Arts rather than Obsidian. The only reason so much content was cut is that Lucas Arts wanted the game completed in time for a holiday release. Obsidian did pretty good considering just how little time they had to work with.

A KotOR III would be nice but if it interferes with Mass Effect II or Mass Effect III then I don't want it lol.theycallmeryan
I agree
Btw If they do make Kotor 3 and its a MMO I'm not buying it....
I hope they do continue on with the KOTOR series as well as the Mass Effect series. Sure KOTOR II was lame, but I still liked it. I actually ended playing that more than I did the first one.
One day we will get confirmation there will be a 3 and maybe more. After all they have a few thousand years to fill in with stories between KOTOR and Episode One.

Pretty sure that NWN2 engine was something new that Obsidian put together (which would explain a lot. ZING!).
How about a REAL KOTOR remake by Obsidian? They can replace the crappy characters like Carth and Bastila with worthwhile additions to the NPC roster, eh?
Edit: Oh snap, I fell victim to the thread necromancy. My bad.
