I bought this game from Gamestop a few days ago because I remember it from a few years ago and never got a chance to play it. Oh my freakin crap, this has got to be one of the most frustrating exercises in trial and error I've ever played. Is it just me or has anyone else died a bazzillion times, most especially when they have to run away from the cops, and worse yet, when you actually try to hit them and snag their weapons? I'm going back to return this turd. It's like this is such a cool idea and I can see the portions where it's REALLY good, but it's like the game doesn't WANT me to enjoy it, like it's own mechanics work against it to constantly keep you losing over and over and over and over and over ad nauseum. It doesn't feel very good to finish a level when you've had to die 30 times just to get passed it because you had to constantly try different things because the game just doesn't give you enough leeway to think things through. I think I'll pick up House of the Dead Extended Cut instead.

I wouldn't be writing this but whenever I look online all i see is glowing reviews of this crap, as if NOBODY had any trouble with this crap at all.

Aye, completed it a couple of years ago, very good game if a tad on the short lived side. It takes practice and trail and error to learn the game. Word of advice for it - Don't play the game like it's some shooter, it isn't a shooter, it's a platform game in a first person view. The intent is to run and jump as fast as you can while only fighting back if you can react fast enough and keep on the move without being killed, and you will die often if you try to go all Rambo. I died often in the game until I learned how to keep moving and only to fight if I had no option but to fight. Keeping on the move and keeping your momentum up is the key to survival in the game. Once you learn the game it begins to show just how good it is.

Haven't played it, but I'm willing to bet it's an underrated or at least an underplayed gem.

Mirror's Edge was the freakin bomb! And everyone was so hyped around 2009-10 I think it was, when they announced the sequel. But it got cancelled. But now it's back for this next-gen and lots of people are excited.

Yes, and I thought it was great, I just wished they made it open world, but going by the new Mirror's Edge reveal at E3 they are going the open world route so i'm excited.

I don't really recall dying very often until maybe the last level, but that was on normal. I think Mirror's Edge was so underrated, it has now become overrated and is now in a rating paradox. I liked it, but unless you can get used to the mechanics, which can be clunky at times, you're not going to like it. I think the reason everyone gives the game a free pass for some of its flaws is because it is trying to do something new, but innovation, obviously, does not always warrant a masterpiece.

I liked everything about Mirror's Edge... except combat. And dying, repeatedly.

The levels where you were just running across the rooftops without anyone chasing you I found very engaging, there was a real sense of speed and flow. The levels I disliked where when you were faced with a dozen heavily armed guards and it simply is not an option to just run past them. Whenever Mirror's Edge 2 comes around, I hope they severely limit the combat. Mirror's Edge is a game about running.

If you try to FIGHT the police you're playing it TOTALLY wrong.

You need to run run run and with Runner Vision activated everything that's important / possible to interact with will be glowing red as soon as you close in to it, so just run, look ahead and plan your path and then of course, react and use the way that opens up for you in the best and fastest way possible.

Maybe because most people didn't have trouble with it. You're probably just not getting the hang of it. I finished it pretty fast without the runner vision on my first playthrough and didn't die all that much, at least not to the point that it started being annoying. It's a great game if you know how to play it.

Yes, it's a fun game with a great new concept. However, it gets pretty repetitive and boring fast.

I did die a lot at certain points of the game but overall it didn' t detract from the interesting experience that Mirror' s Edge is.

From the looks of the trailer combat will definitely be focused on, but a little better this time. But I believe it will still have the same flow and feel as it always has with the running. And I believe the new one is said to be Open-World. Not sure.

Perhaps you just suck ;)
You're supposed to fight the cops when it glows red around them (I think it says in the tutorial and the first time in the game when you encounter enemies) you're also supposed to slow-down time to grab their weapons (also in the tutorial).
Anyway, yeah the game is great, one of the best this gen, looking forward to the sequal.

Yea i bought this on ebay a while back.. took me ages to get into the game, and probably didnt even get past the training stage for the first 6 months ( not because it was hard, just didnt hold my intrest)

When i actually got into it i loved it, such a change to have to run, dodge and plan your escape route to get away from the mobs, and it seems to get more intense the further you go into the game.

That said not everyone is going to like it, but give itanother chance before you return it imo.

Yeah, great game, one of the most underrated games of 2008 (behind Saints Row 2 and Tomb Raider Underworld) and this generation, great concept pulled off well, it was underrated due to the fact that either the critic sucked at it (take a looks at the review here on Gamespot for example) or that the critic didn't understand the concept of the game (it is actually categorised as a shooter on Gameinformer). Looking forward to Mirror's Edge 2, there is apparently a possibility that it will have a level editor.

it takes some getting used to but if you stick with it it's a truly unique game and very satisfying to play. i recommend doing the time trials for a bit before you start the story so you will get a good idea of the different ways there are to get past obstacles and how there are subtle indications of where you should go. i know i thought i was doing things right until i saw the target times and i really had to re-think the way i was playing and the routes i was choosing. if you're having a hard time on a section it most likely means that there is an easier way to do it that you haven't tried yet.

also, if you really hope to understand something then you might want to consider that it generally doesn't do you any favors to call it a turd and more or less question the sanity of anyone that holds a different opinion as you.

The combat orientated portions of this game are laughable there is absolutely no denying that. The gun play may as well not even exist and trying to take the authorities on head to head will end up with you being all sorts of dead. With that glaringly obvious piece of obviousness out of the way I can continue. The atmosphere of this game, in my opinion, is second to none. There is just something about the way the environment looks and the ambient sounds of the city which I jsut cant keep away from. Gameplay wise, after finishing it for the second time I started doing speed runs agaisnt my mates to keep it competetive and enjoyable...even that wore off eventually though.

I would also like to point out a "glaringly obvious piece of obviousness"...

The game is about running, not fighting. Yes, the gun-play is weak but that's only really a criticism in the areas where the game forces you to kill everyone in the room to proceed, and those are pretty infrequent. The whole point of the game is that it's a "chase" game.

At no point in Mirror's Edge did you have to kill anyone. Idk what you're talking about. I agree about the gunplay though. It's only there to interest people who need guns to make the game fun, the game is about the movement and style.

the mere concept of the game frustrated me. what's the point of a platformer where you can't see your feet? the fact that they named the lead character after this gameplay flaw is pretty telling.

one of the worst action games i've ever played..music was dope tho.

I didn't hate Mirrors Edge, but it certainly had a lot of frustrating flaws.  I think many people look back on it with fondness because even today It's a breath of fresh air next to the bland and derivative FPS crap that's been churned out year after year.  It was a game that tried something new, and for that I can respect it, even if trial and error gameplay is one of my biggest pet peeves in all of video games.

It's been years since I played, so I may be misremembering, but there are specific areas where combat is forced on you. Most notably the final floor in the last stage before you reach the roof, but I'm pretty sure there were others.

I may have misspoken, though. Gunplay is apparently optional since there's an achievment you can get for not shooting anyone.

The achievement is specifically "shoot", it doesn't say anything about hand to hand blows or counter-takedowns. There are sections in the game where if you don't clear out at least a few guys I find it unlikely you'll be able to proceed. The last level I mentioned, in particular, was challenging enough to get through on normal even without trying for a non-lethal playthrough. Missue wasn't about the moral implications of killing, but rather the clunkier aspects of combat breaking game flow when the "running" portion of the game was so smooth.

Yeah I realized that. You still aren't killing people though. The challenge comes in using your free running and the environment to knock out the enemies without killing them. There is one part I can think of at the end with this big white square room with large pillars (there were servers in it or something). That was the only part that I thought was maybe "unfairly" difficult cause it involved a lot of trial and error and some luck. The rest of the game I thought flowed quite well. Which is why I think it'll be tricky to keep that flow in an open world game. I didn't think Batman AC did that well enough from Batman AA. The CD Project guys are trying to do the same thing with Witcher 3. Sry, last part was kinda off topic.
