Anyone who has only played Resident Evil 4...

Cannot consider themselves a fan of the series.

Today my brother tried playing The Remake of Resident Evil for the Gamecube after running through Resident Evil 4 again. He stopped playing shortly after, commenting that the camera/controls were bad, the lack of inventory space, and the reliance on ink ribbon.

He does make valid points, but any old school Resident Evil fan laughs at those notions, since it has become second hand nature to them. What really ticked me off was when he said it's just not the same.

I really went off on him, since he was mistaken. Resident Evil 4 is not the same as previous Resident Eviltitles. After knocking this into his head, I did agree that Resident Evil 4 was a terrific game, and I eagerly await the fifth installment (I do find it sad that there never will be another "true" sequel to the series, but I loved Resident Evil 4 regardless).

Okay, first of all, maybe I came off as a bit harsh. If you played the old games, but prefer the new style, that's cool. Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games. But growing up with the series, I was never turned off by anything in the old resident evil games, and would immediately buy it, just like I do with pretty much anything with the Resident Evil Name.

However, if someone has only played RE4, then I don't really think they can consider themselves a fan of the series, just like I wouldn't consider someone a fan of a particular band if he only listens to one song. I suppose in time assuming there are many more sequels with the new RE4 Style, there will be three groups of RE fans.

1. "Hardcore" fans of the old style, who constantly rip on the new games as being a disgrace to the series.
2. Fans of the new style, who prefer all the games after RE4
3. Resident Evil Fans who are pretty much compulsively buy anything with the RE name slapped on it

So you're saying that for Resident Evil to ever exceed to be a good game, it has to be like every other game?

They were survival horror games... not "hey lets carry 4 rocket launchers and strafe passed everything I see."

Now I consider myself a pretty big fan of traditional survival horror titles, but I really didn't like the original Resident Evil games. Most of their flaws just weren't present in other similar games around at the time. The limited save system was pointless, the inventory was irritating, the pre-rendered backgrounds looked horrible, the camera sucked etc. I just found them really hard to play compared to other titles. Games like Silent Hill, Fatal Frame ect. didn't have any of these issues or annoyances (though they often had some of their own) so I just couldn't fathom why Capcom thought they were acceptable. First, Silent Hill came at the end of PS1 era and really took it's stride in PS2 era.

Fatal Frame didn't even start until PS2.

First 3 Resident Evil games came on PS1 and only Code Veronica and 4 came on PS2.

Meaning those games are NOT made in same era.

Pre-rendered background was beautiful for the games that were made back in those days, and limited save were bit annoying, but added extra tension by choosing where and when you should save.

Camera was fixed and Resident Evil often did good job with the angles to give most dramatic scenes. Being unable to see enemies might've been problem in gameplay, but for setting up horror mood, it did it's job very well. Also Capcom rarely made situation where camera angle really hurt the game play by not placing enemies that can surprise you unintentionally.

Honestly, I loved the original resident evil style. However, I absolutely protest to the idea of ink ribbons.

You should NOT be limited to how many times you can save, thats stupid, IMO. But I didnt mind the limited ammo, tank controls, camera, it was all apart of the game.

Ink ribbons were the only flaw, cause it just forces you to do tons of things without saving, then to just die and start over.

Not to mention, if you have never played a resident evil before, they are very difficult.

It was more of a survival/action game than a survival/horror game. Some people who don't consider these people as "true" fans of the series have to be aware that at the time, Resident Evil was in dire need to revamp it controls. The tankish controls(even though still alive in Resident Evil 4 is was a lot smoother and easier to manuever), the aswkward camera angles which has now been fixed to an over the shoulder control which adds the tension and the cinematic flair, and restriction of saving was also a concept that really(to me) held no ground what so ever to exist. While I understand the idea that saving adds the tension... there are some gamers who alot or perhaps they have to go really quick and they have to save.

Resident Evil 4 really saved the series, whether for the better or worse is entirely up to the masses. As for me, I still like playing the older Resident Evil games from time to time like RE 2 and RE 0 but still... a "true" fan in my eyes can not deny that Resident Evil 4 was a much needed title in the series and I welcome it with full arms.

I agree, I had REmake first and I didn't like it and got rid of it, two years later I got it again and then loved it then I tried RE4 and I loved that too. I have tried RE2 and 3, I just didnt like those ones very much...mostly cause the controls and graphics. I am looking forward to REmake2 if they make it which the other day Takeuchi mused about doing just that. RE5 I think when I first saw it, was going to take RE0-CV stories and use RE4 gameplay which I will really like and if there is any indication it seems that is going to happen. Since characters such as Chris, Jill, Wesker, Spencer, Ada, Sherry apart of the story.

Unless you have played EVERY game in the series, you cannot consider yourself a fan.

This includes Resident Evil: Gaiden, Resident Evil: Dead Aim, Resident Evil: Survivor, etc. Of course, playing Resident Evil Outbreak ONLINE is mandatory as well.

All the true fans played online with each other.

I have played pretty much every Resident Evil game (including surviors, dead aim, outbreak etc) And to be honest i love both styles of the original and 4. The series needed a bit of a kick start i think though and 4 certainly did that.

If i had to pick a favorite RE game though i couldn't. I loved 0, REmake and 4 to death...

one could also argue that whoever hasn't played the 2d zeldas isn't a real fan
