What if apple got into the game industry and made a game console next generation, I could definitely see them making handhelds that would rival Nintendo and Sony......what about any other companies getting involved or re-involved: Atari, Sega......

I actually thought about this not too long ago, I think it'd be a good idea considering the MAC now is running head on with the PC I think Apple would hold out well against Sony and such likes. Incorporating things like itunes & imovie onto some sort of dashboard would be cool too.

Sounds awesome. They make wicked hardware. I think they'd do better in the handheld market than they would in the home console market because of their experience with the iPod and now iPhone. If they ever try anything they'll probably at least wait to see if more games are produced for Mac now that the computers use Intel chips.

If people start playing more current games on Macs, it may give them hope. I wouldn't count on an Apple gaming machine, but dreaming about the hardware makes he happy...hahaha

Remember the Pippin. It's not the hardware, it's the games. On the handheld front, a Games iPod could probably work, but to really compete in the home market, you need support. Electronic Arts could produce a succesful machine if they wanted to, but I'm not sure there is a point.

NO! I don't want a hardware company making a console.

Get a GAMING company to do it.

#1 Their games are forced be amongst higher amount of quality *See SEGA*

#2 They release more games of companies they already own so we aren't loosing exclusives but gaining them

#3 They already have a fanbase

Square-Enix talked about releasing some hardware a while back.

But personally I'd love to see a Konami console.

Imagine Konami making dozens of games a year with Capcom and SEGA as strong third parties. :)

Also EA games founder Trip Hawkins made the 3DO. See here:

Why do these threads keep popping up?  Is Apple paying people to get on the forums and see what the reaction would be to an Apple game console?

Yes, because of having 3 machines hooked up to a televsion isn't enough, I want an Atari, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, SNK(They made the Neo Geo), and an Apple system. 6 systems, but no, I really hope not, unless one of the current ones leave, I really enjoy my games spanned across three platforms, having to play on 4 platforms to get my favorite games would be horrible.

I don't mean to take it out on you, there are just a lot of these threads.  Atleast one a week, and today there are two.

Apple makes great hardware but they have failed time and time again when trying to court game developers into making the Mac a gaming platform. Sorry, but no, there are just to many companies trying to get my money into their system, I don´t want a fourth party trown into the mix.

The "ipay" system!

iopds, iphones, are not really that great, just popular and well marketed. (Though the iPhone is neat, not very useful unless you obsessed with your iPod.) You can get better MP3 players. Possibly even for less then the iPod.

A game system? No, they would go the direction of the iPod with it. I would be marketed and made to be cool, though it would lack a lot of substance.

Blah!

I can't imagine it would be affordable either.

Yep. Apple's attempts at gaming have utterly failed. I remember their release of the GameSprockets SDK back in '97ish. It was awful. I actually wrote a game using it for a college class. Using it convinced me that Apple hated software developers and had a corporate mission to make our lives miserable. I imagine things have changed a bit since then... In spite of Apple's apparent hatred of gaming in general, there were some pretty sweet games that came out for the system. I killed many an hour playing Maelstrom.

Sounds like a great idea. With any decision, I favor multiple choices. Let's just hope they do their homework, learn from the mistakes of others so that they do not become another Turbografx-16/TurboDuo. Do not specialize or capitalize any one genre. Nintendo, Sony, Sega, and the PC have all stayed through the years because their game libraries possessed great diversity. The ones that failed, however, decided to specialize on specific genres. Case in point -- NEO-GEO focused on 2D fighting games, and the Turbografx-16/TurboDuo put all their eggs into the shooter basket. Take care not to rush products, nor fail to garner hefty third-party support. Case in point -- Sega's SegaCD and 32X add-on. But HOW can anyone top Nintendo's new controller scheme? I'm sure the company has taken care to obtain a crapload of patents with regard to it. That alone would be hard to beat.

It's a good idea in theory. But it would be competing against the big 3. Apple would have to provide a HUGE incentive in some form or another to convince people that they should buy their console in comparison to the PS3, 360 or Wii.

They would have a better chance if they teamed up with one of the companies and produced software or peripherals.
