Are all Fle Markets overpriced now, or is it just by me?

I just got back from another Fle Market. This makes 3 different Fle Markets I've been to that had way overpriced games. The one I just got back from had a great selection but for way to much. I looked up some of them on Ebay and this guy seemed like he was using the Ebay price but then added the shipping.

I'm in the Cleveland area, is it like this all over? I'm finding better deals at retail stores then I do at any Fle Market

Its getting like this everywhere! Flea markets, yardsales, and thrift stores think they can get Ebay prices for stuff. The dumb a$$es dont even look at "Sold Listings", they see a high number someone is asking and think thats what theyll get for it. They cant grasp the concept that they wont be paying any type of listing/selling/paypal/ or shipping fees.

I went to a Goodwill the other day that always sold games for $3 apiece and systems for like less than $20 apiece when they had some donated. I had gotten plenty of good stuff and never thought they checked Ebay. In the glasscase this time I see NES games Punchout for $8, Zelda for $15, and Waynes World for $75! I walk around the rest of the store, end up with a stack of 14 other NES games I found that were the normal $3 apiece. While waiting in line the manager was like "you see the games in the case??" I said "uhhhh yeah..." He says "the lowest we saw that Waynes World game on Ebay was $150" My response "uhhh I could never pay Goodwill $75 for an old Nintendo game that someone just dropped off in a box of stuff". The cashier said "thats a good point, I thought that was crazy when they brought it up. Noone is gonna come into here and buy a $75 old game". The manager just gave me like a *how dare you* look and walked away. I pay for my games and said "if thats still there the next time I come in Ill do $30 just to have it for my collection". Cashier was just like "yeahhhh I dont know what theyll do with it."

Its like that here in FL as well. People think they can get internet prices for their stuff. There are still yard sales where people are just trying to get rid of stuff though they are harder to find.

Yeah, Goodwills and Thrift stores are the same way here in Cleveland. I know a guy that used to work at a Thrift store here and NES and Super NES games would come in all the time, according to him. But what the employee's do is they would steal them all and sell them to the pawn shop across the street. He don't work there anymore but there are still never any games so other people are doing it and I"m sure it's the same way everywhere

What a lot of people don't understand, is that part of the eBay price is selling and listing fees for the seller, as well. And, just because an item is listed at a certain price, doesn't mean it's sold at that price. A lot people fail to look at the "Sold Items" price.

But if the sellers are smart enough to use these tools, and know what the items are worth, you can't really blame them for trying to get full worth out of their stuff. You'd do the same thing if you were selling your games.

Sellers think they can get ebay prices when that's not how it works. Ebay prices will always be higher because it takes the seller effort to set up the page, take pictures. They don't even get all the money from the sale. I generally just laugh at these sellers that try to sell games for FMV or more. It's a freaking flea market/garage sale, sell me the game for cheap or I'm not buying.

Too many people trying to make a living off of retro games. Resellers try to pick our flea markets clean, but if you get there early enough I can usually find something before they do. Goodwills are god awful and Salvation Army sometimes has a few things. I'm hoping once people shift their attention to the PS4 and Xbox One the prices will get a bit better on the retro stuff. Alot of people trying to sell off their retro stuff so they can afford the new systems.

My local store sells consoles at these prices: All consoles are cleaned inside and out. NES's get new pin connectors. SNES's are never yellow NES and N64 for $45 each, sorta reasonable Master System was I think $45 too or $55 can't remember Genesis Model 1 was $45 too. Model 2s are pretty much worthless so they don't even bother with em SNES and PS2(slim) are $75 so WTF is that...

It's kind of annoying. Collectors aren't willing to pay those prices(At least we, i think). This isn't a hobby I'm willing to shell out big bucks for anyway. I shouldn't be paying even remotely close to what new 360/PS3/wiiU games cost.... I hope the whole market collapses or something because it's getting freaking ridiculous. My collection is pretty small if you look because I can't afford to spend $30-50 on old games I want.

Yep, it's honestly one of the reasons my collecting of retro games has slowed down so much these last couple of years. Nearly all of the Flea Markets I go to have now been taken over by like 2 or 3 video resellers.

No. Most people just price gouge on ebay, then others come along and see super mario/duck hunt being sold for 89.99 and think they have a gold mine, so they list theirs for that also and so on. So flea market people and such look and see high prices so they think they can sell theirs for high prices.

I dont bother with flea markets anymore, everything their is expensive. I used to go because you could find good deals, now the only deals I find are on arcylic blankets with pictures of tigers on them, incense and dirty clothes.

Personally I blame shows like pawn stars and locker wars because they see people bring stuff in and name off big prices, antique roadshow has pieces of crap on there and says its all worth a lot of money and so on. So all these people automatically assume just because they have something that looks old its worth a lot of money. Things like that give people a unreasonable expectation of what stuff is worth. But yes you also have assholes on amazon marketplace and ebay that think if they slap a big price tag on a game that someone will assume its worth a lot and then buy thinking they have something rare and valuable.

Ive got over 2000 feedback on ebay. It takes me just a few minutes to take pics and list the item, I dont even use templates to save time. The fees while numerous arent that bad really unless you are selling thousands of dollars worth of stuff at a time. But to say ebay is expensive because it takes someone 3 minutes to list an item and that they get 3 dollars of fees on a 117 dollar sale is a bit short sighted.

With Videogames everyone seems to trying to cash in. I don't know if all flea markets are overpriced. But some seem out of touch regarding charging for common games. Like Sonic the hedgehog 1 which would be different than buying Dracula X. Plus the condition of the cart is something most venders are clueleas about.

Most venders are clueless about videogames. So it is best to go elsewhere sometimes.

The simple answer is greed of the sellers, and just enough idiots that actually pay those prices instead of haggling, or just refusing to pay.

It's amazing that so many people think it's greedy that people want their full worth from their stuff.

If I see that a Saturn sold for $70, and I want to sell my Saturn, you better believe I'm gonna try to get $70 out of mine.

That's not greed, that's simple supply and demand.

Well then take your stuff to Ebay! If I want to pay full worth for something Id be lookin at Ebay or a used game store. I can return the items and get my $ back if something is wrong. Im not going to pay full value to some random person I might never hear from again on Craigslist or a fleamarket. And Im daymn sure not going to pay Ebay prices at Goodwill when they didnt pay a penny for anything that comes in!

Yeah, its tough times indeed. I've been paying close attention to Ebay lately and the average price on a lot of games have been going down some what. I think around July it was getting a little out of control, but now that summer is over things are becoming more reasonable. I don't think it will go back to being a buyer's market until a long time down the road.

 Yeah people see prices online and think they can charge whatever they want.. most of the items online for high prices don't sell, so thats not a good way to actually sell anything.

Flea markets are typically infested with resellers, and very rarely do you get someone just trying to get rid of their old games they don't want anymore. Collecting games at an affordable price is becoming harder and harder and everyone now seems to check ebay, and usually bases their price on the highest list price, or at least the highest completed listing price. It is really bad with cart based games, especially NES and SNES games now. No doubt it is a sellers market right now on older games. Just wait, in a few years when collecting old games becomes less trendy the prices will drop again and there wil be less resellers since the money wont be there as much. This happened a few years ago with the Atari 2600.

Maybe not completely related, but here are a couple interesting auctions I found - still active, but do add to the idea of ebay's 'high prices" http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ninja-Gaiden-Trilogy-Super-Nintendo-SNES-BRAND-NEW-FACTORY-SEALED-CASE-FRESH-MNT-/310730514807?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item4858fb6177 - yes it's sealed, but is it really worth over $400? Here's a Zelda: LTTP - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zelda-Link-to-the-Past-Super-Nintendo-SNES-BRAND-NEW-FACTORY-SEALED-BLACK-LABEL-/310730471971?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item4858faba23 - also sealed, but, again, is it really worth over $550? I guess maybe I just wish I had that kind of extra money just sitting around to spend on a game I'll never play.

Resellers eaten up, and also sell at flea markets. I'm told its still possible to find good ones. Honestly the best way to get good deals are yard sales and asking if they, or anybody they know, have any old games they want to get rid of. I haven't received it yet, but I bumped into someone who I see now and then, told him I couldn't believe the prices on a genesis console, and he told me I could have his next time he visits his mother. Find college kids--girls, actually, that may have video games their parents bought as children and now have absolutely zero interest. In this case I may score an snes, n64, and a bunch of games for free.

And people are bidding on them too.  I wish I had that kind of money.   Even if I did, I'm good with loose games and would never pay those prices.

That's exactly right. The folks around here use amazon, eBay, etc.,, and price their stuff according, or similar to that. At least you don't have to pay shipping. I'm actually finding amazon to be cheaper then most of these Flea markets or Bargain shops around here

It's like that here in TN, and the worst part is the "dealers" will buy out the people who have all the good games and resale them for internet prices.

Wow, your Goodwill sucks. I'm sorry.

My Goodwill doesn't suck. Here are the prices for mine:

  • ALL DVDs (except boxed T.V. Seasons) - $4.99
  • ALL CDs - $3.99
  • ALL PC, PS1, and Dreamcast Games - $3.99
  • ALL PS2, XBox, XBox 360, GameCube, and Wii Games - $5.99 (I see all of those commonly there, but I never see PS3 or PSP, so I'm not sure the prices on those)
  • Older Cartridge-Based Games - Anywhere from $2-$4.99

Yes your correct in wondering if it's everywhere because it is. I don't go to flea markets anymore because of that. The flea markets where I'm from sell new items at the same price as it would be in the store but without the warranty. These people working the flea markets think that the consumer is un knowledgeable in regards to purchasing their products. People have been so concerned with making money that they forgot that we aren't stupid. I would say that the flea markets are more for tourists because tourists will pay the high prices. Even the vegetables have become over priced. Some of the smaller flea markets sell a lot of junk. First off I would never sell a scratched CD, DVD or Blu-ray. My thing is I care about the consumer because those are the people that keep the business running.
